Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

Prompted by the French quarrel over Latin, Ortega attacks the League for the defence of the French language and culture, which diagnoses as “Germanisation” the fact that French professors and critics now care about truth rather than eloquence. He reads a traditionalist, reactionary current in it, and recalls that Renan and Taine already sought their new substance in Germany and England. An article on language teaching and cultural politics.

The discussion that is now stirring in France on the subject of Latin can serve us as pretext to renew among ourselves the meditation on the problem of the teaching of languages. Just as things now stand in our legislation it is impossible that they continue. An absolute reform is imposed. There goes an opinion.

The reader is not unaware that a few Frenchmen, very well known in the literary world, which more than any other tends to be only a shop-window, have formed a League for the defense of the French language and culture. According to those gentlemen, both are ill: the tradition of expressive brilliance, of easy amenity, of feminine indiscreet curiosity toward the weakest sides of man is being lost in an alarming manner. The university professors have taken to worrying so strongly about the truth, that the vague eloquence disappears from the French chairs. History is no longer a series of panoramic views proposed to the lyricism of the studious youth, but a cruel and tenacious work, meticulous and chaste, upon the documents, upon the sources. Literary criticism is no longer, as in the marrowless age of Sainte-Beuve, a recollection of piquant anecdotes, a list of the amusing sins to which the poets and prose writers let themselves go in the least noble hours of their existence, but the systematic capture of the origins of their creations, the accumulation of lexicographical variations, the reconstruction of the egregious portions of their souls. Philosophy is no longer, as in the idyllic times of Cousin and Renan, a kind of rhetoric, but the reflection upon the complex methodology of the sciences: only Mr. Bergson perpetuates the wisdom of the old regime by expounding, before a numerous audience, a demi-mondaine philosophy.

This means that the French race is ill: according to the gentlemen of the League, the mission of France in history is to write or to speak in an elegant manner, renouncing the truth as a national manufacture. The truth is a Germanic product, and that industrious France, honest, practitioner of the profound virtues is, therefore, a Germanized France. There is the malady discovered: the Germanization. How to cure it? Very simple: with Latin, as the doctor of Molière cured; let the bachilleres study more Latin. In this way Latin culture will be affirmed against Germanism.

This campaign in favor of Latin rhetoric and against Germanic science is moved by the traditionalist and conservative current that, behind the political appearances of the Republic, is taking hold of the atmosphere in the neighboring country. I would like to be mistaken, but in spite of the energetic French socialism, it can be augured that a new restoration is being prepared in France. It is to be hoped that the immortal France of the subsoil, the one that has organized in Europe the liberty, vanquish those reactionary powers once more; but Spain lacking cultural tradition, never yet arrived at the exercise and the love of civil liberty, and subjected, as she lives, to the teachings and the fashions of France, forcibly must those palingenetic essays of a part of the Gallic people worry us.

It sounds like a paradox, but if the balance of the French ideas in the nineteenth century is made, we shall find that this century has been in France conservative, and all of it a growing reaction against the eighteenth. Nothing embarrassed so much the men who have most influenced the last forty years —Renan and Taine— as to know themselves descendants of Voltaire. There is in the work of both a tacit warning that Voltaire is a conclusion, a last moment in the evolution of the French originality. The spiritual center of gravity had deviated toward the Germanic races. A loyal impulse of their souls led them to seek the new substances in Germany and England; so that when the imperial uhlans besieged Paris, one of the places where with greatest vigor and purity the Frankish spirit pulsed —the heart of Renan— was already colonized by German thoughts. Nevertheless, their loyalty was not complete: they did not have the modesty to declare openly the bankruptcy of the national culture, to recommend humility to their contemporaries, to send them to learn in younger races and even originally creative ones. On the other hand, a cultural power like France never dies entirely nor finishes at once: here, there, French scientific inventions will arise; there still remained remnants of the defunct impetus and, above all, a brilliant literature seemed to continue governing the European sensibility. They believed, then, in the possibility of a French renaissance without need of that humiliating detour; a renewal of the ethnic energies. Taine, from England; Renan, from Germany, brought the ideas of the restoration: Hegel the Restorer, the justifier, the romantic, invited them to construct for themselves a nationalist and conservative ideology, to renounce Voltaire and the Revolution, to restore the feudalism. From these dusts come the current nationalist muds. The persistent duality in the souls of Taine and Renan characterizes present-day France; the superior portion of the race, the serious, profound, virtuous men strive to reabsorb the Germanism moved by a clear historical notion: the trublions, the frivolous and vain do not resign themselves to the hegemony of the Germanic spirit, and as they sense that at least the present and the immediate future are its own, they solicit the past and would wish to retrovert it, stopping the course of the world so that the climate endures in which the decadent literature is possible, the formal and adjective culture of the French nineteenth century.

I have said decadent culture; but I would wish to be well understood. I conserve a great love toward those French literati in whose works we have learned to write for lack of national masters. I believe that in the novel, as in the painting, they have enabled a new artistic instrument that without them would have taken a century more to be discovered: the realism in the manner of Flaubert and the impressionism of Manet represent the most apt, most vigorous, most worthy aesthetic posture that men have invented up to now. To a lesser degree, from Chateaubriand to Barrès and from Ingres to Cézanne, many other laudable essays can be found of giving suggestive and imperishable form to the human things, which are the passions and the ideas.

But culture is something more than that, more than the form of the human passions and ideas; it is creation of new passions and of new ideas. Now then; this has been lacking to France in the nineteenth century. The richness of formal inventions has covered for some time the poverty of sensibility for the things themselves, and while they polished the adjectives, the nouns, without which a sentence does not live, were growing old without being renewed. Decadent culture does not mean despicable culture, but only adjective culture, culture called to die, exempt of immanent future. There are certain values in it to which no healthy and ascending culture can aspire, certain softnesses and complications, certain tones of infinite melancholy, certain excess of expressive faculties, elegance, frivolity, magnificence. The products of decadence have that genuine flavor that Seneca compares to that of the apples fallen from the tree, to that of the last drops of a cup.

But we need to live and there remains to us no, there should remain to us no, leisure to enjoy. The decadent culture is fatal for a people that has already fallen. Now we have need of the elementary substances of life, we have need of the nouns. Has the exclusive learning of the art of the adjective that came to us from Paris not brought us the gravest injuries? We are a dying man whom it has been proposed to teach to dance. Pardon, we want to live, to live the elementary life, to breathe air, to walk, to see, to hear, to eat, to love and to hate. We need everything contrary to what France can offer us: culture of passions and of ideas, not of forms. We need an introduction to the essential life.

I may be believed if I say that no one will have felt and will continue to feel greater spontaneous antipathy toward the Germanic culture than I. The pathetic Protestant, the pedantry, the intuitive poverty, the plastic and literary insensibility, the political insensibility of the average German keep firm at every hour my conviction that it is not a matter of a classical culture, that the Germanism has to be surpassed. But let it be well noted: it has to be surpassed; today it is not. What is surpassed is the so-called Latin culture. If we aspire to something stronger, it is indispensable for us to depart from the Germanic science. So that, today for today, the Romance peoples have no better nor more serious thing to do than to reabsorb the Germanism without thinking of the galvanization of the Latin mummy. After all, whatever there may be of immortal in the Latin culture we shall also find in the Germanic; for what is Germanism more than the absorption of the Latinism by the Germans throughout the Middle Ages?

Come curarlo?

We need an introduction to the essential life. This is the first and the most ample necessity. Therefore it is necessary that all the Spanish higher instruction, all the university careers, all the special schools, require the knowledge of the German language. The Germanic culture is the only introduction to the essential life.

But this is not enough.
