Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

A reply to Ramiro de Maeztu, who feared excessive precision in abstract Spanish and preferred words steeped “in a little fog”. Ortega counters that culture is the precise world, distinguished from savagery only by its method of precision, distinguishes truthfulness (which withstands technical rigour) from mere sincerity, and invokes the Platonic τὸ ὄντως ὄν against the autobiography of one’s nerves.

Nothing can be so pleasing to me as to dispute with Ramiro de Maeztu over apparently superhistorical matters. It is necessary that we attempt, each in his own way and according to his vigor, to enrich the national conscience with the greatest possible number of ideal motives, of points of view. The discrepancy, then, seems to me very desirable and every dogmatism wounds me. I only believe myself able to reserve the right to warn that a precise and trenchant opinion is not always a dogma, that the systematism can be found a hundred leagues from the dogmatism and, in short, that arriving at certain capital questions, the contradictor not shun the technical discussion.

The possibility of resisting the technical rigor is for me the criterion of the truthfulness, a thing of many more carats than the mere sincerity. The sincere man tells what his nerves really feel and with this believes he has fulfilled. The truthful man considers this perpetual autobiography a sin into which we all sometimes fall, and seeks to raise himself from the humor of his nerves to what truly is, to the Platonic τὸ ὄντως ὄν.

After this warning, I enter, without more, to gloss rapidly and at flight of pen what Ramiro de Maeztu answers to my notes on «¿Hombres o ideas?»[1] I do not want to let another week pass without acknowledging receipt of his solicitude and without thanking him for the benevolent interest with which he reads my writings.

«I am afraid in Spain —he says— of the excessive precision in the language of the abstractions. What is necessary in the Teutonic languages turns out perhaps dangerous in the Latin ones. The Saxon words carry in themselves, not only an idea, but a sentimental emotion, and thus speak at the same time to the intelligence and to the heart. We, for example, say Dios, Rey, Verdad (Deus, Rex, Veritas); the English say God, King, Truth. And God is Deus, but, moreover, is good, bueno; King is Rex, but also he who discriminates, he who judges, he who distinguishes the good from the bad; truth is verdad, but also loyalty. Be true!, the lover begs the beloved upon parting for a long absence. Our words are too concrete. I would prefer, if that were possible, to leave them bathing for some time in a little fog until seeing whether something of that moss sprouted from them, of that ineffable musicality with which, in the lands of the North, by speaking more to the feelings of men, they seem to impel them to the action. Of course I recognize that those fears can be ridiculous and that perhaps it is a better procedure to gird them or make them concrete starkly so that the thought seeks new words when it finds itself uncomfortable in the old ones…»

To this I have very few observations to make: Maeztu tells himself everything and follows the method of Anatole France which is, after all, the ancient and accredited one of the tale of the good pipe. In this way we find ourselves upon concluding the paragraph in the same lamentable situation as at beginning it and… this literary method indeed does harm to Spain. Moreover, this manner of treating so grave a matter seems to me very little respectful. Nothing less than culture is at stake, in what it has of most essential. Culture is the precise world, it is not another world substantially distinct from that of the savagery —Naturvolk, Naturzustand, the Germans say.

The materials with which both worlds are built are identical, with no more difference than that in the culture they are treated with method of precision and in the savagery they are left to join and loosen at their pleasure, obeying vague and mysterious influences. Maeztu may believe that no work cost me to make paragraphs more or less well stamped and harmonious in praise of the vagueness, of the imprecision, of the crepuscular life of the soul, which is, without doubt, the most diverting and delectable for each individual. But today there does not exist in our country an undisputed right to make good literature: we are too obliged to convince and to make concrete. Whoever does not feel capable of anything more than literature, let him make it the best he can, and if he succeeds we shall crown him with flowers and send floats in his honor. I do not well understand the horror toward the art for the art that attacks some contemporary Spanish thinkers. The aesthetics is a dimension of the culture, equivalent to the ethics and to the science. Who knows if our race will find, in the last instance, its justification through the aesthetics as the Germans and the English found theirs through the grace.

As long as there is no power of choice the moral dilemma is not born. If we can make good literature, but we also feel ourselves capable of science, our decision must incline unequivocally toward the latter, without any pact with the former. The gentlemen Valle-Inclán and Rubén Darío have their place assured in heaven, as Cajal and don Eduardo Hinojosa can have it. Those who will probably go to hell —the hell of the frivolity, the only one there is— are the young men who, without being Valle-Inclán nor Rubén Darío, imitate them badly instead of shuffling the archives and reconstructing the history of Spain or commenting on Aeschylus or St. Augustine. Either literature is made or precision is made or one keeps quiet.

In this business of the precision, dear Maeztu, I find myself obliged to break with all the half-tints. Our illness is vagueness-making, cheapening, and the ambient immorality is nothing but an imprecision of the will always originating in the intellectual mistiness. Ganivet —of whom I have an opinion very distinct from the common one among the young men, but which I keep silent about so as not to clash uselessly— read a little book, a very bad one by the way, of Th. Ribot, in fashion then, became enthusiastic and let loose the species of the Spanish abulia. Now then: of abulia one can only speak when the normality of the representative functions has been demonstrated. A people that is not intelligent has no occasion to be abulic. Without precise ideas, there are no strong volitions.

Moreover, it does not seem to me true to attribute to the Anglo-Saxon words an atmosphere of emotive energy and to deny it to our castizo ones. Everywhere there are equivocations, and, by misfortune, in our land we are making of the equivocation a national industry. Well what, the word emotion that you employ in the cited paragraph, has it not suggested to you all kinds of vague sweetnesses? Has it not led you to say sentimental emotion, which is like saying arboreal tree or something like that? Are you sure that in Spanish emotion is more concrete than in English?

«And I still have more fear of the excessive systematization of the ideas, rather, of conceding too much importance to the systems. I believe —says Ortega y Gasset— that among the four or five immovably certain things that men possess is that Hegelian affirmation that the truth can only exist under the figure of a system».

«I do not need to highlight the danger of the synthetic systematizations. With little that these doctrinarisms be forced they would lead us to repeat the saying of the scholastics of the University of Paris when they denied that any fact deserved credit against the teachings of Aristotle».

«But if there is something, no longer immovable, what can there be immovable in this world that turns so many times?, if there is some idea that has struck deep roots in the modern soul, it is that of the evolution of the systems, of the schools and of the dogmas».

The affirmation of Hegel not only does not exclude that of the development, but, as you know, Hegel has constructed more deeply than anyone the system of the evolution. To demand a system as I do has nothing to do with the scholasticism of the Sorbonne. The truth for Hegel is never exhausted; the Idea evolves tomorrow, as today and yesterday; it is, as Kant and Fichte would say, a task, an infinite problem. But in each instant it is necessary that the truth of the world be a system, or what is the same, that the world be a cosmos or universe.

System is unification of the problems, and in the individual unity of the conscience, of the opinions. This is what I wanted to say. It is not licit to leave floating in the spirit, like loose buoys, the opinions, without rational ligature of one with another.

In a dialogue —I do not recall now which, although I think it is Phaedrus— Plato says that the ideas are like the fabulous statues of Demetrius, that if they were not tied they would go away upon the arrival of the night. It is not decent to maintain in the soul watertight compartments, without communication one with another; the hundred problems that constitute the vision of the world must live in conscious unity. One can, naturally, not have a system ready; but it is obligatory to try to form one. The system is the honesty of the thinker. My political conviction must be in synthetic harmony with my physics and my theory of art.

I do not understand, then, what you call conceding too much importance to the systems. These must not be more or less important: they must be and that is enough. From their lack comes the painful atomism of the Spanish race, its disaggregation. It is necessary that our soul march with perfect continuity from Los borrachos, of Velázquez, to the infinitesimal calculus, passing through the categorical imperative. Only through the system shall we put well tense the spirit of our race, as a scaffolding of ropes and stakes serves the Bedouin to make taut the feeble cloth of his tent.

«Development!… —you continue. This magic word begins to extinguish the thirst of a definitive finality». This, dear Ramiro, is what I indeed do not understand. The evolution is the modern category; I do not believe that there exists today any thinker who is not an evolutionist in one way or another. But I do not believe that it has occurred to anyone to think that the idea of the development —the development hypothesis— frees us from the peculiar human nightmare after a definitive finality. Quite the contrary. In comparison with the philosophy of the eighteenth century, in comparison above all with Spinoza, our evolutionism —I repeat that we are all developmentalists— signifies a return, healthy and fruitful in my opinion, to the Aristotelian teleologism, to the biologism of the great Stagirite. Of all the sciences it will be possible to doubt whether they need the notion of end for their economy, except the biology, which in turn gives the perspective for the evolutionism. And scarcely do we find ourselves with the pair means-end, kind of ideal Deucalion and Pyrrha, we can assure that we need a definitive finality. Only that Kant has disciplined us and we no longer fall into the rude metaphysics of the final causes, of a final end that is a thing. That definitive reality is… an Idea, friend Maeztu. The spiral needs as much direction toward the infinite as a straight line. The evolutionism does not save us from the dilemma: either men or ideas. And precisely in these years is being born the son that the wild and rude Homo primigenius of the biology has had in chaste nuptials, during the nineteenth century, with the ethical mother, sacred Ceres fecund and virginal.

«I believe in the one and in the other, in the development of the men in the doctrines and of the doctrines in the men, and as I believe in the development and the development is spiral, it does not worry me to orient ourselves toward East or toward West, but I affirm the possibility of developing ourselves toward the four cardinal points and one could even add besides the four the Nadir and the Zenith, as in the crosses of six arms that are found in the Greek churches».

Agree, friend Maeztu, that that spiral that needs no orientation is a spiral invented by you. And I do not manage to excuse you when I think that you write that from the land of the vectors and of Hamilton. For my part I would wish to believe that the cross of six arms has seduced you and has made you fall into sin.
