Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A toast at the Café Pombo: Ortega restates his thesis that the most important concept in history is that of the generation — each lives walled up in its own sensibility and communicates with the others as through a wall, hearing their voices without understanding. He adds a theory of myth as “vital luxury” (to live, says Nietzsche, is to live more) and makes Pombo the only myth produced in fifteen years, an injection of phantasmagoria into the heart of the bourgeois.

When I was ten years old, with my father and with Rodríguez Chaves, miraculous author of Cuentos de dos siglos ha, I used to come to ‘Pombo’ to take rice-water sherbet. Since then I believe I have not set foot again in this venerable tabernacle until today. Certainly it is interesting for me to compare those puerile visits with this one I now make. Then ‘Pombo’ was to my eyes a thing much older than I: it seemed to me that I was visiting a decrepit gentleman, with great display of spectacles and a scanty frock coat with borders, a sort of Mesonero Romanos or Hartzenbusch. Now, finding myself among you, I find that ‘Pombo’ is a thing younger than I. While I have aged, this perennial refreshment shop has renewed its youth. Decidedly one does not know what in the end the young and the decadent is: until recently the oldest bridge in Paris was the Pont Neuf.
I become, then, perfectly aware that many of you are already another thing from me, the most other thing that can be imagined: you are another generation. I have written and said more than once that the most important concept of history, the hinge of its workings, is the idea of generations. Each of them brings into the world a distinct sensation of life, a cordial horizon of its own within which it lives inexorably recluse and which sets it against the preceding generation and the subsequent one. Each generation thus lives walled within its sensibility and communicates with the others through it as through a wall. They hear one another’s voices, but they do not understand each other. The radical sensibility of life is an impassable frontier. That is why I have hoped for a long time that one morning, looking at newspapers and reviews and reading what a young man writes, I shall have to say to myself: ‘This I no longer understand.’ It will be a painful impression that I stumble against the wall or prison of my time; it will be the conviction that I have already lost plasticity, that there is in me no matter not yet sealed and stamped, capable of receiving the intruding impression. That day I shall have no choice but to close my fontanelle, as Baroja says, and go in search of the next Academy.
But, in short, the fact of this feast in the sacred crypt reassures me about the present and indicates to me that I still understand the noises of the next room and that you do not yet discover in my gesture too much ankylosis. This means that I sincerely thank you for the courtesy of this feast in the basement.
Spanish life has lacked in recent times the most necessary thing, which is, paradoxically said, vital luxury. Life has the odd condition that only what overflows suffices for it. Life, when it is healthy, is an overflowing of itself; to live, as Nietzsche says, is to live more, it is luxury of life. And one of the most essential forms of vital luxury is the creation of myths. That is why every epoch of ascending vitality is a great inventor of myths. The myth is a gift we make to sordid reality and like an injection of phantasmagoria that we give to things, which then remain charged with reverberations and cracklings, sublime or buffoonish. The mythical spirit comes to be a manufacturer of aurora borealis. Well then, in the last fifteen years the only myth that has been elaborated is this one of ‘Pombo’: it is the only fact that reaches the distant Spaniard — for example, the provincial youth — with a cheerful resonance and a chromatic splendour of farce. And it is not devoid of significance that, to give that injection of legend, you have chosen this café, the most philistine and most traditional. You have wanted to infect the very heart of the bourgeois with fantasy.
But besides being ‘Pombo’ the only myth of the present — allow me to venture to prophesy the future —, ‘Pombo’ is the last barricade. I shall explain myself, although this obliges me to take a detour.
Our time forms part of a broader historical cycle that begins with the formation of the present nationalities. The formation of a nationality is one and the same thing as the elaboration of a system of religious, political and artistic traditions. During this stage people live by tradition, that is, they believe in certain doctrines, accept certain authorities, enjoy certain aesthetic forms that they have received from their elders, which seem to them the only imaginable ones and which they never put in crisis or suspicion. This type of life, for which to live is to insist on what has been received, is traditionalism. But behold, in the Renaissance, suddenly, the European heart veers upon itself, and the attitude of spirits is inverted. All those traditions, all that received begins to appear insufficient, unfounded, clumsy, absurd. People begin to feel that life has value only if it struggles against all that, if it frees itself from all that. We have been carrying for over three centuries during which for people to live was to free oneself from something, from some tradition. Therefore we have been carrying three centuries of liberalism, of combat against the constituted as such, against political authority, against religious dogma, against scientific scholasticism, against the poetic rule. The French Revolution, from its barricades — the barricade is the lodging of liberalism — achieves the great political liberation, frees us from the ancient régime. This achieved, the age of artistic liberalism begins intensely. The first romantic generation was the subversion against the privileges of the classics and the absolutism of the Poetics. Since then each literary generation, instead of prolonging the gesture of the preceding ones, the first thing it does is to rise against them and present a new programme: if these successive programmes are analysed, let it be noticed that, in the end, they are constituted by negations of something anterior and traditional. Artistic liberalism, like all liberalism, is a beautiful attitude of combat, a state of intellectual war, but for that very reason a pure negation, since it is liberation from traditions. Like Goethe’s Mephistopheles, ‘it does good willing evil’ and affirms by denying. This sense of life as a negating effort appears, effectively, in the second romantic generation with a diabolical, satanic and ‘perverse’ nuance. Barbey d’Aurevilly seats poetry in the dramatic emotion of blasphemy. Blasphemy is the frenzy of annihilation that needs to resurrect the victim perpetually in order to take pleasure again in slitting its throat. Thus Barbey needs to be a traditionalist and believer in order to be able to blaspheme against the past and God. Baudelaire is going to discover beauty in the black Venus, which is the plastic negation of the classical Venus, the candid Venus. In 1870 begins, with Impressionism, the great rebellion against the pictorial Bastilles, against the Museums and their tradition. The painters too are going to open the series of subversive programmes. In short, even extra-worldly mathematics takes on a liberal character in this time. The titles of the new sciences of space display in the open their negative musculature: non-Euclidean, non-Archimedean geometry, etcetera.
But liberalism, by its very essence, has its days numbered. It is not a definitive attitude, sufficient to itself. When no traditional puppet with a head remains, liberalism will find nothing from which to free us and will be reabsorbed into its original nothingness.
Well then, my friends: I believe that, at least, in poetry, you are the last liberal generation and this Sacred Crypt where you lodge, the last barricade. You have demolished the last, almost impalpable redoubts of literary tradition and before you the aesthetic earth becomes flat and desert again. Hence the suggestive physiognomies of poetic Robinsons, of literary Adams that it is frequent to find among you.
Further on, I seem to be seeing other men, younger still than you, a coming generation, in whom a new sense of life, not at all liberal, will begin to pulse. Lovers of hierarchies, of disciplines, of norms, they will begin to gather the noble stones to erect a new tradition and raise a future Bastille…
I toast, then, for ‘Pombo’, the only myth of the present and the last barricade!
