Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

Under an epigraph from Plotinus on Longinus (“a philologist, but no philosopher at all”), Ortega comments phrase by phrase on an imaginary but typical letter endorsing a Catholic meeting against secular schools. He mocks its “multiplicity of consciences” — religious, social and scientific — by invoking the medieval doctrine of double truth, and attacks the claim to erect spiritualist philosophy as the type of intellectual nobility.

Filólogos men ho Longinos,

filósofos de udamós.—PLOTINO

If in the newspapers there appeared a letter addressed to the bishop of this diocese to be read at a protest meeting against the secular schools, and this letter began in the following manner, what would we say?

«My respectable prelate and distinguished friend: Since my absolute oratorical incapacity prevents me from taking part in the meeting that is to be held tomorrow to request of the public authorities the closure of the secular schools, I judge it a duty of conscience not only religious, but social and scientific, to adhere to this Catholic manifestation, which is at the same time a sample of culture and an affirmation of the true sense that popular teaching must have, if it is to fulfil its educative mission, forming upright and sound spirits».

What would we say to this beginning? We would say very little; we would say only that about the religious conscience of the author we had nothing to say: de gustibus non disputatur. We have come, it seems, to the sad agreement that about tastes and religious beliefs one cannot dispute. True, to remove religious opinions from discussion is to deny them the value of serious humanity, and to deny them this value is perhaps to deny them all values, is to disintegrate them from cultural conscience and place them on a par with olfactory sensations.

We would add that the challenging vigor with which the author of the letter adheres to the meeting seems plausible to us —not only his religious conscience, but his social conscience and his scientific conscience. This multiplicity of consciences will be a problem for those who ignore that in times of intellectual decline men could admit what has been called the double truth, that is, that in one and only mind there could be declared theological truth what at the same time was recognized as scientific falsehood. Such a two-headed truth required that duplicity of conscience which shines forth in the letter.

But what if the letter continued thus?:

«The school without God, whatever be the apparent neutrality with which atheism disguises itself, is an unworthy mutilation of human understanding in that which it has most ideal and sublime. It is a brutal extirpation of the germs of truth and of life that beat in the depths of every soul, so that education may fecundate them».

If the letter continued thus, neither would there be much to comment. Scarcely would we stretch ourselves to think that in almost all the headings of the Spanish penal codes there is an article that says: «He who directly or “indirectly”…» And of course, in that article are invariably found all Spaniards, because each individual is “indirectly” guilty of whatever happens in the solar system, by virtue of that commercium physicum in which, according to Leibniz, all the portions of the universe find themselves. In the same way, within the atheistic reality fit all the appearances of neutrality that the author of the letter deems opportune to introduce: «whatever be»… But this we would almost not reach saying: that paragraph does not transcend the religious subjectivity of the author, which we have promised ourselves not to wound in the least.

The grave thing would be if the letter continued thus:

«Not only the Catholic Church, infallible oracle of truth, but all the branches that schism and heresy tore from its trunk, and all the systems of spiritualist philosophy, and everything that in the world bears some seal of intellectual nobility, protest with one voice against that sectarian intention and uphold the respective denominational schools, or those, at least, in which the cardinal principles of theodicy serve as basis and presupposition to teaching, and penetrate it softly and silently with their influence».

Here the scientific conscience already speaks: certainly it speaks confusedly, and I do not know whether we dare to add captiously; in that paragraph faith abounds more than good faith. What would we say?

We would say a great many things: if our memory did not fail us and if we were more erudite, we could, in reality, say here everything that has been said in the last two centuries, because the temper of that paragraph truly takes us back two centuries.

It seems —is it not so?— as if it wanted to establish as the type of intellectual nobility the spiritualist philosophy. If it were so, we would have no objection to declaring that for the scientific conscience that opinion is perfect, absolute and roundly inexact. We would say that spiritualist philosophy is an abnormal fact in contemporary culture. We would note that the word “materialist” was coined —I do not say whether well or ill— for the philosophy of Democritus, and today it is even trivial, within the “scientific” history of philosophy, to look at Democritus as the only thinker of Hellenic classicism worthy of being placed immediately beside Plato. Now: does the author of the letter have sufficient Catholicism to deny the title of intellectual nobility to one who marches almost neck and neck with Plato? And even more may be said: Plato himself, the Plato who was reborn in the Florentine Academy and as it were revived in Bishop Cusanus, was certainly not the spiritualist Plato —to think of the soul the medieval Aristotle sufficed and more than sufficed—, but the Plato disciple of Democritus and master of Kepler and Galileo. Would we say more? Doubtless: facing the “sectarian intention” of that epistle we would energetically maintain that among the classical philosophers of Antiquity and of the Modern Age (we do not fear that one will go looking for classics for us in the Middle Ages) “there has not been a single one” who owes his rank to the admission in his system of a spiritual substance. So much so, that an Austrian professor, Catholic, combative and intransigent —Otto Willmann— when he has wanted to compose ad usum fidelium a history of philosophy from his sectarian point of view, has had to title it “History of idealism”. Why not a history of spiritualism, if this marks exemplarily the tradition of spiritual nobility along human evolution?

It is, therefore, captious to heap up in one vague sentence all the classical things and to grant only to spiritualism the honor of mentioning it by its name. The seal of intellectual nobility does not today certainly correspond to any spiritualist system, if, at least, the noble is to be also fecund.

But the author of the letter would not wish to seem intransigent: he first admits the Catholic schools, then the denominational ones and, finally, contents himself with “those in which the cardinal principles of theodicy serve as basis and presupposition to teaching”. Let us see: what would we say of this? We would say that the author of the letter ought to withdraw his first paragraph, because in it he protests against the secular schools, and now he admits them. We would repeat that the general position in which he places himself is captious, equivocal, little severe.

Indeed; the secular school neither theoretically pretends to exclude, nor in most cases excludes, religious teaching. The secular school limits itself to denying the right that children be educated in a religious teaching according to the dogmatics of a particular school. The secular school gives room in its system of pedagogical instruments to the cardinal principles of theodicy. The author of the letter thus admits, in his social conscience and in his scientific conscience, the secular school that he repels in his religious conscience. We find ourselves before an example of the double truth. That letter could be signed by Duns Scotus.

As to the word theodicy… Two samples of the reticent style in which this imaginary missive is written precede; now comes the third. It is the duty of whoever writes, since words are glass ampoules that the individual inflates with meaning in his own way, to employ the vocabulary with a view to the one who is going to read him. Anything else would be Jesuitism. Now; for the public of a meeting that is going to protest against the secular schools, theodicy necessarily means something like theology, a watered-down theology, a theology come down in the world, but after all an affirmation of a God, of a personal Theos. This is the meaning that theodicy can have in that letter; it cannot loyally have another. It is a matter, then, of affirming that no profound, classical thinking, and especially no classical pedagogy, has tolerated an education that does not rest on the affirmation of a real divinity. In this way, the secular school, already declared irreligious, remains moreover unusable for being antiscientific. Perhaps the author of the letter would think that the accusation of being antiscientific has more force than that of being irreligious.

We agree that the listeners of the meeting applaud the pedagogy based on theodicy. Let schools be opened, then, in every neighbourhood where the new hearts are prepared, according to the theodicy of Spinoza, Voltaire, Lessing, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Strauss (the young), Renan, etcetera. Or is it that these people do not bear the seal of intellectual nobility? Or is it that these people did not create a theodicy? Perhaps the listeners of the meeting did not count on the wisest and noblest modern theodicies being theodicies without God, as the surest psychologies are psychologies without soul.

No; cien veces no.

And what would we say if after a paragraph so singular, which out of anticipated respect I do not copy, the letter added this?:

«Neither in Germany, nor in England, nor in the Scandinavian countries, nor in the mighty North American republic, does the secular school have proselytes in the sense in which the odious French Jacobinism, candidly mimicked by a part of our youth and by the frivolous and self-interested game of some politicians, preaches it».

We would say that the scientific conscience of the author has had remorse over what is written above and no longer wants to speak of the secular school, but of the secular school in the sense, etcetera. More than saying, then, we would limit ourselves to asking: what intellectual contents does that “odious” (this word proves documentarily that the letter would have been composed toward 1680) French Jacobinism have that are not Spinoza, Voltaire, Lessing (Saint-Simonians), Rousseau, Kant (Renouvier), Hegel (Taine), Strauss, Renan, etcetera? What is, speaking seriously, the present French Jacobinism, if not that or other analogous names?

Moreover, it is inexact that that sense of the secular school —a sense that the letter does not specify— is confined to France. In 1905, the teachers of Bremen declared that religious teaching was superfluous in the schools of Bremen, and proposed a pedagogy based on the materialist monism of Haeckel. The fact has been repeated subsequently.

In sum, we would say that in that letter two things are confused which there is no right to confuse.

With respect to the secular school there are two questions of very different order: a question of religious creed and another purely pedagogical question. This is the one that should be made clear first and the one that demands an unequivocal answer when our scientific conscience is conjured. I would say thus: does the exclusion of the religious element fit within a scientific pedagogy? For my part the answer will offer no equivocation. I answer: no. But the reverse must also be true. Does any other religious element than that scientifically determined by it fit within scientific pedagogy? No; a hundred times no.

All the heaviness of Castilian philology would have to gravitate upon us and it would not manage to convince us that secular school means irreligious: never did laico oppose religioso, but eclesiástico. Secular school is school without Church. Neither would we admit, not even in jest and as if joking, that one should pretend to declare the secular school antiscientific. This one possesses a founder who alone weighs more in the history of scientific pedagogy than all the remaining pedagogues together: should we not smile tranquilly before that excessive letter, whoever writes it who is going to write it? Should we not smile before a letter according to which there would be excluded from pedagogical science… Pestalozzi!?

Would the listeners of the meeting, on the other hand, content themselves with a school in which God were only the emotion of human morality, not a being, but the mere sentiment of ethical relation among men? Well, this is the theodicy of Pestalozzi. Divine words of the divine educator! «God is for men only through men, the God of men».

Let no one come, then, with apparent scientific fervors when one is radically a theologian: let it be said that pedagogy is not admitted as sole regulator of what should be taught; let it be said that one does not go against the secular school, but against the whole of pedagogy. Science is not an ornament that, for greater elegance of an argument, may be added to faith.

Well; but what if the letter did not conclude there, but still other paragraphs followed? To those other paragraphs we would say nothing: they are lyrical warnings of the author, who has wanted to offer to a select public the spectacle of an abundant faith.

Lastly: and if in some archive, in some rare or simply curious book it were discovered that that letter was really written and was composed by don Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, what would we say? We would say nothing: it would be rather a time for stupor. We would feel the most sincere anguish, we would uncover our heads with reverence, we would not remove a letter of this catechism; but grieving gravely over the cases of life, we would set in motion our capacity to respect.

For whatever may personally touch me I will conclude by warning that only to one right do I believe I have conquered the right: that I not be called disrespectful. I who know almost nothing have always known one thing: to respect the respectable in the measure that it is so.

No; cento volte no.
