The maps of the thirteenth century and later offer us a linguistic Spain very different from that of the ninth century. Homogeneity has broken. A new idiomatic principle has entered like a wedge into the uniform mass and has split it into three zones. To the East and West will perdure, with diverse evolution —Galician, bable, Levantine—, the Mozarabic, Visigothic substratum, little original, equal to the other extra-Iberian Romance tongues. In the middle is consolidated a differential dialect that anticipates in many cases the forms later triumphant in the other Romance languages. The Castilian language was, from the start, original and futuristic. Here are its major notes: loss of the f, with aspiration in h; loss of the g, as in enero and ermano; inexplicable, sudden, apparition of the j; formation of the ch and the z; conservation of the o in ojo, in noche; advance in fixing the diphthong ue already in the tenth century (when two and three years later the others still vacillate between ua, ue, uo). Finally, it is the first Iberian Romance tongue that cultivates poetry.
Castile is a new sword, a new politics and a new phonetics.
