Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
The conclusion of the essay on the new art (The Dehumanization of Art): Isis of the ten thousand names — every reality has countless facets, so it is highly probable that this attempt to characterise the new art contains nothing but errors. Ortega says he sought the intention of the young works rather than their execution, moved neither by anger nor enthusiasm but by the delight of understanding, and leaves one point standing: the impossibility of going back.

Isis myrionymous, Isis the one of ten thousand names, the Egyptians called their goddess. Every reality in a certain way is so. Its components, its features are innumerable. Is it not audacious, with a few denominations, to want to define a thing, the most humble? It would be an illustrious chance that the notes underlined by us among infinite ones turned out to be, in effect, the decisive ones. The improbability increases when it is a question of a nascent reality that begins its trajectory in the spaces.
It is, then, exceedingly probable that this essay of filing the new art contains nothing but errors. On finishing it, in the volume it occupied, there spring now in me curiosity and hope that after it others, more accurate, be made. Among many we will be able to share out the ten thousand names.
But it would be to duplicate my error if one pretended to correct it by highlighting only some partial trait not included in this anatomy. Artists usually fall into this when they speak of their art, and do not distance themselves properly to take a wide view of the facts. Nevertheless, it is not doubtful that the formula closest to the truth will be the one that, in a more unitary and harmonic turn, holds for the greater number of particularities—, and as at the loom, a single stroke knot a thousand threads.
I have been moved exclusively by the delight of attempting to understand —neither anger nor enthusiasm. I have tried to seek the sense of the new artistic purposes, and this, it is clear, presupposes a state of spirit full of previous benevolence. But is it possible to approach a theme in another way without condemning it to sterility?
It will be said that the new art has produced up to now nothing worth the trouble, and I am very close to thinking the same. From the young works I have tried to extract their intention, which is the juicy part, and I have not concerned myself with their realization. Who knows what this nascent style will give of itself! The enterprise it undertakes is fabulous —it wants to create out of nothing. I hope that further on it contents itself with less and hits the mark more.
But, whatever its errors be, there is a point, in my judgment, immovable in the new position: the impossibility of turning back. All the objections that may be made to the inspiration of these artists can be accurate and, nevertheless, will not bring sufficient reason to condemn it. To the objections one would have to add another thing: the insinuation of another path for art that is not this dehumanizing one nor reiterates the used and abused ways.
It is very easy to shout that art is always possible within tradition. But this comfortable phrase serves nothing to the artist who waits, brush or pen in hand, for a concrete inspiration.
