Abstract
He wants to refresh Spaniards’ perception that the Republic, like it or not, is the historical reality they are in — not a republican theory nor a regime “brought” by anyone: it arose with the spontaneity of a biological phenomenon, and even the monarchists collaborated by standing still. The title casts acceptance of that destiny as love of one’s fate.

Viene a nosotros magníficamente imperativa.
My previous article proposed, for the time being, one thing: to refresh in the minds of Spaniards the vision of the national reality that is the Republic. The disputes, combats and private desires over whether it should be one way or the other, and even over whether it should not be, have inconceivably clouded the retina for the simple perception that the Republic, whether one wants it or not, is the historical reality in which one now stands, that now is the Spanish people. And, naturally, I do not refer to the fact that today the official form of government is the Republic. I refer to that effective reality of current Spanish life which lies beneath all officialdom, beyond and facing our desires, preferences, disputes and ideas about what should be or should not be.
I ask no one —among other things, because it would be illusory— to abandon his «ideas» or his «preferences». But, as a Spaniard, I demand of him that, without abandoning his ideas, he step outside them for a while to look steadily at the effective process of these last years, and, above all, of those months —the summary of a long past— that ended in the advent of the Republic.
Seldom in history will a clearer, more transparent fact have occurred. One sees to its very bottom, as in a mountain brook. The Republic arose with the simplicity, plenitude and unreflectiveness with which biological phenomena occur, with which in May the leaves burst along the elm’s branches and the ear swells upon the stalk. The naivety of these georgic images is not untimely, for a people as rustic as the Spanish usually moves in history guided by a vegetal instinct.
There was not even propaganda —among other things, because it was materially prevented by the Governments. The Republic, in fact, was not «brought» by anyone, but came about spontaneously in the Spaniards, in all Spaniards, even in the monarchists. This last is the most characteristic thing about a completely sincere historical change engendered by its own maturity: that even the enemies collaborate in it. They collaborated by staying still, paralyzed by the conviction that they had lost all justification, that the Monarchy could no longer justify itself before the tribunal of our history. All Spaniards were feeling that the future could be as problematic and hazardous as the future always is, but that, whatever happened, one thing was clear: that the Monarchy was exhausted as a directing force of the nation; that through it one could not reach any future; that, with illusion or without illusion, the Spanish people had no remedy but to constitute itself in another, more sincere form and to try to live and make itself and achieve itself by holding to itself, without guardianships or masks, naked before the inclemency of destiny. This was and this is, beyond all anecdote, the reality of the Republic in Spain.
For the Republic in Spain, let it be noted, does not mean the triumph of a «republican theory», but the simple reality of Spain laid bare. The Spanish Republic is not a Republic of «republicans», that is, of a more or less numerous group of doctrinaires, devotees of an abstract ideal of form of government, who, taking advantage of a loophole of chance, have «smuggled in» their imaginary Regime into the destiny of a country, as contraband, producing an interference or a halt in the authentic development of that destiny. Having given the false impression of this has been the greatest crime of the last Governments. Let it be remembered that the Republic has triumphed in Spain when in Spain there had ceased to be «republicans» —be it said without any offense to the only two residues and survivals of «republicanism», which were the radical party and the federal party. Almost all the representative men of the new Regime had declared themselves republicans only a little while before, with the Dictatorship already ruling. This demonstrates, with an unusual overflow of evidence, that the Republic in Spain is not the occasional triumph of a policy sustained by certain gentlemen who called themselves and call themselves republicans, but the ineluctable result of a deep past; in sum, the destiny with which the Spaniards, all Spaniards, have found themselves. And destiny is the very opposite of what men put of themselves with their «ideas», preferences and desires; it is the inexorable reality that is there, that carries us and envelops us, that we do not make, but that, whether we realize it or not, we are.
For that reason both acts and words will be as vain against it. Reality is not whisked away, it is not driven off with phrases or spells, it is not exorcised. It comes to us magnificently imperative. And I would like, at least, all the young men of Spain, freeing themselves from every confusionism, to see that destiny clearly so that they may do the only thing that true men can and must do with destiny, which is to accept it, and accepting it, to dominate it, to make it their own. This is what the ancients called amor fati, love of fate, the enthusiasm for the task that is imposed on us precisely because it is imposed on us and is not a whim of ours. The Republic is the destiny that today opens before the Spaniards to make or remake a nation —a destiny, perhaps, rough and difficult; but, being destiny, the only one.
When I have said that no one «brought» it, I do not intend to begrudge a single ounce of recognition to the effort, sacrifice and exposure that a group of men put into the advent of the Republic, and for which, with full right, Power was delivered to them. They did very badly as rulers. Let us not insist on that now. What I have tried to signify is that all those particular efforts, however great they were, would not have sufficed to bring the Republic; that it came in all and through all. Thus, I have often heard friends and enemies attribute to a certain article of mine, which ended in a Delenda est Monarchia!, I know not how much efficacy in the republican triumph. I have heard it and I have always kept silent with a silence that was not assent. Because, in my judgment, the truth is not that that article of mine had importance for having contributed more or less to the advent of the Republic, but on the contrary, because the Republic was coming on its own feet, that article of mine had importance, that is, symbolic resonance. The thing is as clear as «good day».
Viene a noi magnificamente imperativa.
