Abstract
An article of 9 December 1933: it demands clarity from the victorious “right” and asserts the republicans’ right to defend the Regime to the last. It defends Alfonso XIII, whose withdrawal fulfilled the last national duty of an exhausted Regime, but denies that a nascent Regime may surrender itself; it closes with “Amor fati! Spain, hold fast to your fate”.

In the name of the nation, we ask, then, for clarity. The Regime is the soil in which we stand and in which the «right» have been able to achieve their triumph. That soil has to be firm ground. Upon it it urges us to begin the other task, that of making a new soul for our people in which the best of its eternal soul sprouts again. We do not admit in such a matter tricks nor mists. One must give moral diaphaneity to the public air of Spain so that its men can breathe it. Let the neck of cunning be wrung. In the indigenous shield stands the lion, but not the vixen.
Above all, it would be useless. No one, with sense, can dispute the right of the republicans to defend to the last the Regime. While this finds itself in question there cannot remain a clear way to a normal politics. It is not licit for the republicans to abandon a single strategic post.
Let the situation not be compared with that of the Monarchy because it is a wish to lose reason again. Some monarchists have censured Don Alfonso XIII because he handed over the Regime he represented. Such a saying seems to me stupid and pure phraseology of irresponsible people. Don Alfonso fulfilled his duty. He could perfectly have taken the Spanish Army out into the street to fight the Spanish people, and it is very possible that he would have managed to overcome it militarily. But that victory was not a solution. Don Alfonso found that the Monarchy, for one cause or another, had exhausted all its reserves and could not offer the Spaniards a solution. Better said, that it could only offer them one: to withdraw. It was the last national duty that an old Regime could fulfil that has worn itself out against the corners of history.
But a nascent Regime cannot hand itself over, it has no right to surrender. Above all, a Regime that has not been «brought» by anyone, nobody has the right to hand it over.
Amor fati! Spain, for once, hold on well to your fate!

Bisogna dare diafanità morale all’aria pubblica della Spagna perché possano respirarla i suoi uomini.
