Gratitud exquisita debo a las personas que presurosas enviaron su simpatía al proyecto de El Espectador. A ellas dedico ahora la realización.
Debe el lector entrar en la lectura sin altas esperanzas. Yo no sé hasta cuándo ni en qué grado de plenitud podré llevar adelante el empeño. El tiempo, tan galantuomo, se encargará de decírnoslo a los lectores y a mí. En tanto, como escribe Montaigne, allons conformément, et tout d’un train mon livre et moi. Habrá números que padezcan aridez mental. El escritor pasa, a lo mejor, por zonas espirituales donde no brota una idea. A veces, dura meses la estéril situación. Durante ellas el lector habrá de contentarse con un «espectador» que lee, extracta y copia. Otros números llevarán un trozo de mi alma.
Pues me interesa, sobre todo, advertir que no es mi intención hacer cosa que se parezca a una «revista». Es una obra íntima para lectores de intimidad, que no aspira ni desea el «gran público», que debería, en rigor, aparecer manuscrita. En estas páginas, ideas, teorías y comentarios se presentan con el carácter de peripecias y aventuras personales del autor.

Exquisite gratitude I owe to the persons who, promptly, sent their sympathy to the project of El Espectador. To them I now dedicate the realization.
The reader must enter upon the reading without high hopes. I do not know until when nor in what degree of fullness I shall be able to carry forward the undertaking. Time, so much of a gentleman, will take care of telling it to the readers and to me. In the meantime, as Montaigne writes, allons conformément, et tout d’un train mon livre et moi. There will be issues that suffer mental aridity. The writer passes, perhaps, through spiritual zones where no idea springs forth. At times the sterile situation lasts for months. During them the reader will have to content himself with a «spectator» who reads, extracts and copies. Other issues will carry a piece of my soul.
For it interests me, above all, to warn that it is not my intention to make a thing resembling a «review». It is an intimate work for readers of intimacy, which neither aspires to nor desires the «great public», which ought, strictly, to appear in manuscript. In these pages, ideas, theories and comments present themselves with the character of personal vicissitudes and adventures of the author.

Il lettore deve entrare nella lettura senza alte speranze. Io non so fino a quando né in che grado di pienezza potrò portare avanti l’impegno. Il tempo, tanto galantuomo, si incaricherà di dircelo ai lettori e a me. Nel frattempo, come scrive Montaigne, allons conformément, et tout d’un train mon livre et moi. Ci saranno numeri che soffriranno di aridità mentale. Lo scrittore passa, magari, per zone spirituali dove non sboccia un’idea. A volte, la sterile situazione dura mesi. Durante essi il lettore dovrà accontentarsi di uno «spettatore» che legge, estrae e copia. Altri numeri porteranno un pezzo della mia anima.
Poiché mi interessa, soprattutto, avvertire che non è mia intenzione fare cosa che assomigli a una «rivista». È un’opera intima per lettori d’intimità, che non aspira né desidera il «grande pubblico», che dovrebbe, in rigore, apparire manoscritta. In queste pagine, idee, teorie e commenti si presentano con il carattere di peripezie e avventure personali dell’autore.
