Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
An essay on the Argentine: to judge a nation justly one must destroy it in imagination and rebuild it. Ortega finds in Argentina a rigid, mature state out of proportion with its society, and reads it as a people projecting itself high — since all life is at root a project.

I do not believe that there exists but one radical way of judging with justice, that is, with full comprehension, a thing, and it is this: to destroy it imaginarily and then to attempt to reconstruct it in the idea. Example: the European who goes to Argentina and finds what it already is, starts from what he sees and seeks what is lacking to it. In this manner only defects and shortcomings of a nation can be discovered, and it is the surest method for seeing the world full of holes, fractures and absences. The traveller does not thank what the Argentines have managed to do up to now, in view of the fact that much is still lacking to them to give for fabricated an adult people and set it walking through history. But if instead of starting from the present Argentina, one annihilates it in mente and one finds oneself with the initial Pampa and the vague throngs of the Indian tribes and the small nuclei of Spanish colonizers and one thinks that in a little more than a century, with those materials has been able to be built the nation we find today, the Argentine history will seem to us a marvellous performance. The truth is that the present Argentina should not have existed, I mean, that the mere forces of historical mechanics that have favoured it do not suffice to explain its existence. A wide fertile land does not suffice for a people to organize itself, besides that in the Argentine land fertility is negatively compensated by not a few geographic defects. If only those mechanical forces had acted, the most natural product would have been a swarming of independent and surly States between the Andes and the Plata or, at most, a federation like Australia, under whose official unity endures the sourest hostility among the particular States. Because more, much more than all the economic, urban, etc. advances of Argentina, surprises the degree of maturity to which the idea of the State has arrived there.
I remember that the awareness of this was the most unexpected and strong impression that of the Argentine public life I received in my first journey, and that the recent one has only confirmed. I presumed to find a State still soft, vague, of little accented edges and hardly differentiated from the great social protoplasm. I found a State rigid, frowning, with grave pomp, separated completely from social spontaneity, turned facing it, with overflowing authority over individuals and particular groups. At times in Buenos Aires I remembered Berlin, because I saw everywhere emerging the juridical and gendarme-like profile of the public institutions[150]. I do not mean by this that the Administration is exemplary; perhaps the outrages are frequent in it, although much less than could be presumed. The Administration is the periphery of the State, the zone where it touches social spontaneity, and however energetic the former may be, the administrative facts correspond to the level of the society more than to that of the State.
For me it is a clear thing that between the Argentine social reality and its idea of the State there is a curious disequilibrium and something like an anachronism. This goes very far ahead of that, and a considerable non-coincidence accuses in the whole many good and bad, plausible and dangerous things.
In the State the nation looks at itself, or, said in another form, what the State is in a nation symbolizes the idea that that nation has of itself. On this point there is no inconvenience in accepting the thesis of Hegel, after extirpation of its metaphysical roots. The State is national reflexivity.
The abnormal advance of the Argentine State reveals the magnificent idea that the Argentine people has of itself. And as it is a question of an incipient nation, this idea is not a memory of ancient accomplished deeds, but rather a will and a project. Well then, the Argentine people projects itself in a high module.
It is not that in life projects are made, but that all life is in its root a project, above all if one galvanizes the full ballistic sense that resides in the etymology of this word. Our life is something that goes launched through the sphere of existence; it is a projectile, only that this projectile is at once he who has to choose his target. Our life goes placed by us at one or another goal. The choice of target will not be totally free; the circumstances limit the margin of our free will. But it has been a tenacious blindness of the ideologues to attend only to this limitation of vital liberty and not to notice that fatality is also limited, that it never determines us completely, but that at every instant and situation we not only can, but inexorably have to choose what we are going to do.
For this reason nothing qualifies more authentically each of the persons we know than the height of the goal toward which he projects his life. The greater part shuns projecting, which is no less a projection. They go adrift, without their own course: they have chosen not to have an apart destiny and prefer to dissolve themselves in the collective currents. Others put their life to goals of small height and from them nothing but terre à terre things can be expected. But some shoot their existence toward the heights, and this automatically disciplines all their acts and ennobles even their daily regime. The superior man is not so by his gifts as by his aspirations, if by aspirations is understood the effective effort of ascent and not the believing that one has arrived.
Similarly a nation may be placed at a shoddy existence or project itself toward the zenith.
The Argentine people does not content itself with being a nation among others: it wants an exalted destiny, exacts from itself a superb future, a history without triumph would not know how to please it and it is resolved to command. It will achieve it or not, but it is exceedingly interesting to attend the firing upon historical time of a people with imperial vocation.
Where has this magnanimous will come to Argentina from? Has it acted in it from its first steps, or has it arisen in a revolt of its historical path? I do not sufficiently know the past of this Republic to attempt to answer myself these questions. What I do believe is that that high idea of itself nested in this people is the greatest cause of its progress and not the fertility of its land nor any other economic factor. The aspiration toward the heights is a force of suction that mobilizes all the inferior and automatically produces its perfecting.
But the haughtiness of projects has some inconveniences. The more elevated the module of life at which we place ourselves, the greater distance there will be between the project —what we want to be— and the real situation —what we still are. While we carry clear the double entry that all life is —project and situation— magnanimity yields only advantages. But if from pure looking at the project of ourselves we forget that we have not yet fulfilled it, we shall end by believing ourselves already in perfection. And the worst of this is not the error that it signifies, but that it impedes our effective progress, since there is no surer way of not improving than believing oneself optimal. The magnificent idea that we have of our possible being, solidifying upon us, seals us hermetically for receiving nourishment from the surroundings and for letting out in acts, essays, effusions, our intimacy that is being made. Moreover, it annuls all the original germinations of our creative spontaneity which, rough and irrational as all creation, do not coincide with that polished idea, perhaps deny it, but which, in the end, developed, would enrich it.
Does not something of this happen in the Argentine nation? Does the excessive advance of its statal idea not cut short many initiatives of less juridically correct profile, of more chaotic aspect, but which this novel people still needs for its intimate growth? This would lead us to make a question that has to be understood cum grano salis: is there not too much order in Argentina? That which has already been achieved there, would it have been achieved if that rigorous statal order had pre-existed?
It is not opportune to develop now these questions, since, as will be seen, I am going in passing toward another theme. But let it not excessively surprise that if it is the use among those who speak of Argentina to point out what is lacking to it, I begin by underlining what abounds to it, and in what could seem an absolute advantage I see a possible defect and a likely danger. The reason is this:
One of the most salient characters of the past century was its enthusiasm for the State. For that reason, it made of politics the centre of its preoccupation. There was achieved in this manner the formation of the most perfect States that have existed in the whole historical sphere. But for that very reason, from them comes the most grave risk that today threatens civilization. When the State reaches a certain degree of development, it is a machine so formidable, so efficient and executive, so easy to handle, that it is very difficult to resist the temptation of using it whenever one stumbles upon some collective problem and whenever the dominant portion of citizens desires that things happen in this or that other way. With merely touching the spring of the public Power, the gigantic authoritarian artefact puts in motion its fabulous mechanical body, orthopaedically fitted to society, and obtains, without possible opposition, the desired result. The mass is enchanted at seeing its State, which represents it, functioning overwhelmingly, crushing without great effort every indocile will that pretends to face it.
Unfortunately, the greatest lack of our time is the ignorance of history. Never, since the sixteenth century, has the average man known less of the past. Now, attached to its disadvantages, the superiority of an old civilization is the accumulated historical experience that would allow it to avoid the fatal and naive falls of other times and other peoples. As an historical cycle advances, the problems of human coexistence are more complex and delicate: only a refined historical consciousness allows them to be solved. But if it finds itself with very difficult problems and its mind, for having lost memory, returns to childhood, there is no likelihood of good success. The mortal errors of other epochs will infallibly return to be committed.
This happens today in Europe and, by reflection, in the whole world. It has been forgotten, or it has not been wished to learn, that there is nothing more dangerous for a nation or set of nations than to pass the line in the intervention and authoritarianism of the State. Whatever the ultimate causes of the ruin of the Roman Empire and of the Greco-Roman civilization, it is indubitable that the most immediate one consisted in the crushing of social spontaneity by a disproportionately perfect State. The Roman State annihilated, dried up to the root the life of that splendid world. Today it is attempted to fall back into the same mortal treatment of national problems. Their solution is sought by the shortest path, which is to throw upon and against them the State, to let it absorb all the breathable air and crush individuals and groups. If this tendency is not soon conquered, the State will notice that it cannot live of itself, that it is not itself life, but a machine created by collective vitality; therefore, needful of this to conserve itself, lubricate itself and function. Bolshevism and fascism are two examples of this elementary and anachronistic solution —two examples of political primitivism that irrupts into a civilization where the problems are of maturity and of higher mathematics.
In fabricating that sublime idea of itself, has not Argentina let itself be influenced by that hypertrophic valuation of the State which the European nations transiently suffer?
But, I repeat, it is not this the matter that now interests me. That curious disequilibrium between the social reality of the republic with a name of precious metal, and the idea of itself that its State expresses, serves me as an instrument to penetrate the individual soul of the Argentine man.
Let it be recorded —of the man. Now I do not speak of the Argentine woman, to whom in another time I devoted an exalted song. It is necessary that we begin to correct an inveterate error that is committed when one speaks of the psychology of a nation. One says: the Frenchman or the German or the Spaniard is so or in this other way. But of whom does one speak? Of the male or of the woman? Why close oneself to the evidence that in each country the two sexes differ much more than corresponds to their sexual difference? I mean, that a Frenchman is not only distinct from a Frenchwoman, as a man in general is from a woman in general, but as two men or two women could differ between themselves. Very frequent is even the contraposition between the masculine and the feminine character, within a nation, in the relatively epicene zones of the soul. If this is forgotten, one cannot arrive at understanding the soul of a people that results from the collaboration of two distinct souls. And as every compound, it is only understood when its elements are isolated and analysed separately. One of the first data of history is that in the primitive Sumerian civilization two languages were used —emeku and emesal—: one was the language of the men and the other the language of the women. Well then, whatever the grammar, even under its apparent identity, this double sexuation of language endures. Against what could be believed, it is not very frequent in history that men and women of a nation understand each other well. The general thing is that they suffer one from the other through a certain fatal incongruence that has profound causes, at times enigmatic, at other times most clear. Among these last there is one which it is inconceivable not to see pointed out in historians and psychologists of peoples; the distinct level of evolution that almost always exists between the man and the woman of the same country. There are epochs in which man advances to subtle manners of existence that the contemporary woman is incapable of feeling: thus in the fifth and fourth centuries of Athens. Other times it is the woman who goes in the vanguard: compared with her, the man of his time and race seems rough, elementary, half-made. Thus among the Germans of Tacitus and among the Romans during the monarchy and beginnings of the republic.
Let us cautiously elude diagnosing with respect to Argentina what is its present equation between the yin and the yang, between the masculine and the feminine principle.
Now it is solely a question of fixing one of the traits that in the contexture of the Argentine man most surprises the European. On this point it is fitting that the man of the Plata make no illusions: the impression he produces on the European is exceedingly strange. And this strangeness is multiplied by the apparent similarity of all the elements that seem to integrate the one and the other. The Argentine speaks European languages, contains only European ideas; the architecture of his corporal form is unequivocally European. Nevertheless, when we have before us a typical Argentine we notice that something prevents us from communicating with him. At first it occurs to interpret this difficult communication as the most natural thing in the world. Does not something similar happen to us with the Asiatic, with the African, with the Malay? This is the most favourable interpretation, to which anyone who in Argentina insists on making illusions will resort. But the truth goes in another direction and has nothing to do with a continental difference of souls. The souls of the Asiatic continent, of the African or Oceanic continent differ from ours by their vital contents. Before those men we notice that communication is difficult because their intimacy is radically distinct from ours. We feel before us a source of life that from the depth of the subject pours an exotic liquor, whose taste is not habitual to us. We remain at a distance from him, without possible or without easy fusion, but we clearly perceive the cause of that distancing; we see before us a being morally distinct from us, so distinct that at once we remain outside him.
In our relation with the Argentine things happen in another manner. Everything at the beginning invites us to the promptest and most gliding interpenetration. He not only speaks our same grammatical language, but the same language of ideas and values. The vital content is in everything important identical to ours. For that reason in the dealing with him we launch ourselves rapidly to intimacy. This is our error. The velocity with which we attempt to glide into the intimacy of the Platean man serves only so that we violently collide with his surface and hurt ourselves. It has been an optical illusion. The penetration was not so easy. The paths toward that intimacy were only a trompe-l’oeil, as if on a cliffed coast someone painted seductive avenues.
Let us now refine a little the description of the strange phenomenon. What do we notice after that initial shock? We notice as if that man, present before us, were in truth absent and had left of himself only his exterior person, the periphery of his soul, that part of it which faces the social surroundings. His intimacy, by contrast, is not there. What we see is, then, a mask, and we feel the usual embarrassment when speaking with a visor. We do not attend a spontaneous living. His behavior seems to us in part too puerile to be sincere, in part too polished to be sincere either. In short, we notice a lack of authenticity. The word, the gesture do not come forth as born directly from an intimate vital ground, but as fabricated expressly for external use. Through the word we hear and the gesture we see we do not manage to slip down to the personal ground; we remain in them as before something that were only a façade. Without time to put ourselves on guard we run up against the fact that that man ends there, that his manifestations are not such in rigor, nor emanate from his intimacy, nor reciprocally open it to his neighbor, but that, on the contrary, they are a breastplate and a defense against all penetration. Behind the gesture and the word there is not —it seems— a reality congruent with them and in continuity with them.
Let this be granted everything it has of undeniable exaggeration. It is precisely a matter of exaggerating, since it is a matter of understanding. Full understanding begins by reducing to concepts or, what is the same thing, to words, the irreducible reality. Every concept is by its nature an exaggeration, and in this sense a falsification. In thinking we dislocate the real, we carry it to an extreme and beyond all measure. But this violence we do to it allows us to inject light into it and make it comprehensible. Facing things we fabricate excessive models that serve us to understand ourselves in our dealings with them. Is not the topographic representation of a land grotesque? And yet the map serves us to walk on it with safety. This fictional character the concept has, this its conscious falseness, is its greatest virtue. Let him who does not perceive the native irony of all our ideas renounce the exercise of the intellect. Exaggeration is the creative moment thought possesses. In it we invent an exacerbated, schematic world, composed of cries —every name is a cry, a myth, a legend—, but full of dramatic clarity. Truth results when, against the light of that fictitious world, we look at reality. It is enough for us then to subtract our own exaggeration.
The Argentine of today is a man on the defensive. This excludes a limine cordiality in dealing. To the European a conversation —outside diplomacy or business— does not taste right if it is not, more or less, an exchange of intimacies. These neither are nor have any need to be revelations of private life. On the contrary: the most authentic intimacy manifests itself in speaking about the world. When two men of science converse about problems of their specialty the subject is not private, but the conversation consists in each expressing what he intimately thinks or glimpses about it. The delight of social intercourse lies in the neighbor opening in our honor some pores of his soul and sending us warm, immediate emanations from his interior. This implies a relative abandonment to the situation, the consciousness of feeling safe.
In the normal relation, the Argentine does not abandon himself; on the contrary, when the neighbor approaches he seals his soul more hermetically and disposes himself to defense. We find ourselves before a man who has mobilized the greater part of his energies toward the frontiers of himself. If we try to speak with him of science, of politics, of life in general, we notice that he slides over the subject —as the German psychiatrists would say: that he speaks in front of things. It is natural that it be so, because his energy is not placed upon that matter, but occupied in defending his own person. But… in defending it from whom, from what, if we do not attack it? Here precisely is the peculiarity that surprises us. That the attacked one defend himself is the most congruous thing, but to live in a state of siege when no one besieges us is a superlatively strange propensity.
While we abandon ourselves and let ourselves go with entire sincerity to what the theme of the dialogue demands, our interlocutor adopts an attitude that, translated into words, would mean approximately this: Here the important thing is not that, but that you get it well into your head that I am nothing less than the editor-in-chief of the important newspaper X; or else: mind you, I am a professor in the Faculty Z; or else: be careful! You are ignoring or forgetting that I am one of the leading figures of the gilded youth that triumphs over the elegant society of Buenos Aires. I have a reputation for wit and I am not disposed to let you fail to know it. Wherewith our interlocutor does not manage to convince us, rather, he wastes so excellent an occasion to show that he is an intelligent journalist or a man of science or a paragon of elegant wit. Instead of actively living that very thing he pretends to be, instead of being immersed in his office or destiny, he places himself outside it and, cicerone of himself, shows us his social position as one shows a monument.
But monuments do not live; they perpetuate a single rigid and monotonous gesture. This defensive attitude obliges the Argentine not to live, since living is an operation that is done from within outward and is a continuous budding or welling from the secret individual ground toward the roundness of the world. The European marvels that the Argentine gesture —I am still referring to the male— lacks fluidity and has an excess of stiffness. If he does not stop he will believe that it is no more than that gesture, and his opinion of the man of the Plata will be, as it usually is, unfavorable. Only a long coexistence allows us to discover beneath that rigid mask the flow of an ardent vital lyricism. But the Argentine spends the greater part of his life in preventing himself from living authentically. That defensive preoccupation brakes and paralyzes his spontaneous being and leaves standing only his conventional person.
Has the Argentine always been like this? I do not know, and I have too lively a conviction that peoples greatly modify their character to attribute to their last and invariable ground a trait which in a certain epoch is, without doubt, proper to it. But whoever wants to answer such a question needs to penetrate a little further into the analysis of that so strange propensity.
The description of it that I have sketched is not only exaggerated, but takes only the coarsest and most external part of the fact. We must go deeper. What has been said would mean merely that this type of man is disproportionately concerned about his social figure or position. The excessiveness of such a concern is understood only if we admit two hypotheses: 1st, that in Argentina the social position or function of an individual is always in danger because of the appetite of others toward it and the audacity with which they try to snatch it away[151]; 2nd, that the individual himself does not feel his conscience easy with respect to the fullness of titles with which he occupies that position or rank. It is natural that where both factors exist, that restless, agitated and defensive attitude be frequent. I believe that in Argentina it is so, and I explain without difficulty this most external stratum of the psychological structure I have called man on the defensive.
Indeed, let not the most elementary thing be forgotten: Argentine society has been made and lives more and more under the onslaughts of emigration. Thousands and thousands of new men arrive on its Atlantic coast with no other content than a fierce individual appetite, abnormally exempt from all inner discipline. People wrenched out of their native societies, where they would have lived, without realizing it, moralized by a stabilized and integral type of collective life. But the emigrant is not an Italian, nor a Spaniard, nor a Syrian. He is an abstract being who has reduced his personality to the exclusive aim of making fortune. All men aspire to the same thing, but in the soul of those who live inscribed in ancient societies that aspiration occupies much less space and is not the radical norm of their acts, but is mediated by many other norms and aspirations. The hypertrophy of the former is produced at the expense of the latter which, depressed, leave audacity free.
The influence that economic crises acquire over the whole life of Argentina, in the moral and even in the sentimental, would be inconceivable in a European nation. But it seems to me an error to explain that monstrous influence by merely pointing out the difference of constitution between the economy of that country and ours. The decisive cause is psychological and consists, in my judgment, in the fact that within each individual —not in the objectivity of economic facts— the craving for wealth occupies a completely anomalous place. This exorbitance of the economic appetite is characteristic and inevitable in every people nourished by the migratory torrent.
There is, then, a relative justification for the Argentine’s defensiveness. The portion of wealth or social position, the public rank of any order that an individual possesses is in constant danger from the pressure of appetites around it, which no other imperative moderates. Where audacity is the everyday form of dealing, it is forced to live in perpetual alert.
These immense new lands that suddenly arise in the midst of a very advanced civilization, such as that of the present world, offer such a number of possibilities that there is no way to realize them fully. For example: the development, extension and wealth of Argentina obliges a good number of universities to be instituted in a short time, with a very large number of chairs. In Europe the chairs have not usually preexisted the capacities. On the contrary, only when there was a grown group of people who had long been cultivating a discipline was the public position created for its teaching. The most singular process of these new American nations inverts the order, and the chairs, the positions, the social gaps arise before the men capable of filling them. The same happens with the bureaucracy, the technical, sanitary, judicial offices, etc. All those social functions had to be served by force, and since it was illusory to pretend that qualified people would serve them, it at once became normal that anyone should serve them, even with the most insufficient preparation. This was to multiply the audacity of the audacious: any individual can, without madness, aspire to any position, because society has not become accustomed to demanding competence. Since this incompetence is very general —I leave all the margin of exceptions one judges right—, the percentage of persons who exercise activities and occupy positions in an improvised manner turns out enormous. Everyone knows this very well in the secret of his conscience; he knows that he ought not to be what he is. That is to say, that to the restlessness aroused by the pressure of others is added an intimate insecurity, a private and permanent startle that must be compensated by adopting a conventional, insincere gesture, to convince with it the surroundings that one is effectively what one represents. Thus, while one tries to convince others, in passing one tries to convince oneself.
The fact is that the individual has not reached that position, office or rank through an inner necessity, by virtue of a past that was preparing him and, as it were, molding him for it, but suddenly finds himself inside it, like the face in the mask. Since the profession, activity and position one serves has not been born of the person, but rather has supervened around him, there is no adherence between the individual and his social figure. He must carry it at arm’s length, as in the Aragonese festivals someone carries the giant figure. Hence that insistence on underscoring his public role. Precisely because it is a role, precisely because the man is not authentically what he pretends to be, he needs to make it known. This is a rooster, wrote, according to Cervantes, the pseudo-painter Orbaneja, beneath what he had painted.
It would be a useless aggression to object to this that, for example, in Spain cases of incapacity are very frequent, alike in the chairs and in the other offices, professions and positions. The fact is superlatively certain. But that incapacity which abounds in my peninsula does not resemble at all that which is habitual in Argentina. He who in Spain exercises a profession does not improvise its exercise. From always he lived toward it and for it. What happens is that he lacks natural gifts. In the Argentine it is not a matter of his usually being ill-equipped[152], but that he has never attached himself to the activity he exercises, has not accepted it as his vital destiny, never considers it definitive, but as a transitory stage toward the only thing that interests him: his advance in fortune and social hierarchy. For this reason it happens that even those Spaniards individually worse equipped than the Argentines turn out superior to them as professionals.
In Argentina it is very frequent that the person passes through the most heterogeneous vicissitudes, that he is one thing today and another tomorrow. The offices are serpent’s shirts, except that there the shirts are not usually from the serpent that wears them.
All this means one thing that must be said, although it may perhaps anger. The immoderate appetite for fortune, the audacity, the incompetence, the lack of adherence and love for the office or position are known characters that occur endemically in all trading posts. That, precisely that, distinguishes a native and organic society from the abstract and alluvial society that is called a trading post. A European who does not know South America and, wrapped in his prejudices and petulances of an old continental, supposes that all those countries continue to be, of course!, trading posts, will not be able to understand well what I have just said. Because Buenos Aires, with its two million inhabitants and that profile of the State that appears rigorous behind every street corner, is not, of course!, in any way a trading post. Only against the background of this evidence can my scandalous indication have interest. Those peoples are nationalities much more adult than is presumed in Europe. Without doubt, the most advanced in its development, the most formed of them all —at least of those I have visited— is the Argentine Republic. None is less a trading post. And, yet, its own vigor has prevented it from stabilizing like Chile or Uruguay. It has had to continue growing rapidly, and this maintains in it, alongside its features of relative maturity, others unexpectedly primitive. It is not easy to express the idea I have, and which seems to me in its inevitable paradox to fit reality fairly well. This Republic is today less of a trading post than any other South American country and, at the same time, it is more of one.
To clarify this thought we can resort to a graphic image and represent that society divided into two parts: a nucleus perfectly nationalized and around it a periphery of recent emigration. Within it, then, there are two components in a very different state of evolution and, one could say, with a different chronology. Is this an optical illusion that the traveler suffers? Or is it, perchance, the schema of the dynamic situation that today radically moves the public life of that country, above all, that is going to move it in the coming years? Is one not beginning to live a new period of the struggle between the type of man properly Argentine and the type of abstract man that is that of the trading post, the man not yet argentinized? I must say that in my last trip —twelve years after the first— it has seemed to me to notice a growth of the trading-post dimension that Argentina possesses, with the reciprocal diminution of the other component. And it is natural that in a history like that of this country —so similar in many points to that of Rome— a periodic tussle should supervene between both social ingredients. At this moment the abstract man whom the sea has brought dominates over the historical man whom the earth has shaped. The prestissimo of that history has not given the earth time to digest the Atlantic alluvium. It is inevitable: for some years Argentina will suffer from historical indigestion.
Perhaps the word trading post sounds bad to Argentine ears. But this disgust toward a word behind which the magnificent destiny of that country palpitates will be an error. It would suffice to replace the Latin phoneme with its Greek equivalent, to make patent all the dignity of what it means. The trading post is strictly the emporium. And this was Rome. And the marvelous destinies of Rome are not understood, if one does not start from a sociology of the emporiums. I believe that nothing would clarify more for the Argentines the evolution of their country than a sociological analysis of the first Roman history.
This duality of the collective body, which will not cease in Argentina until it ceases to be an emporium and becomes a nation like the others, organic and of slow pace, imposes by itself upon the individual an also dual disposition. It obliges him, whether he wants to or not, to be too concerned with playing his role. The offices and positions or ranks are usually, as I have indicated, situations external to the subject, without adherence or continuity with his intimate being. They are positions, in the warlike sense of the word, transitory advantages, which are defended while they facilitate individual advance. This gives irremediably an extrinsic and frivolous character to the relation between the individual and his situation. The individual who is a journalist, or industrialist, or professor, is not so before himself and for himself; he is not irrevocably so, he does not see his profession as his vital destiny, but as something that now happens to him, as mere anecdote, as a role. In this way the life of the person remains split in two: his authentic person and his social figure or role. Between the two there is no effective communication. This alone would suffice to explain to us why communication with this man is difficult for us: he himself does not communicate with himself.
But it is necessary to go deeper into this most peculiar psychology. The public structure of Argentina fosters that dualism of the individual soul; but it is evident that if there were not in the native way of being a propensity of equal tendency, that exterior influence would remain mitigated and perhaps compensated. We have, then, to observe from within the individual, apart from the influences he receives from the surroundings.
When one looks from within at this terrible fact that is our life, that of each one of us, one soon notices that it consists radically in a dynamism. I mean that our life is never a simple being, a pure lying still. To live is always to live for something or in view of something; it is a transitive verb. Hence a human life cannot exist without a vital interest, which sustains, constitutes and organizes that life. The moment every vital interest were completely and effectively loosened, life would cease to be.
That vital interest can be singular or plural, consist in this or in that; but from it derives everything else we are. For this reason I call it the vital spring. And to understand a man and find out the anatomy of his soul one must investigate, above all, what his vital spring or springs are, what it is that first interests him in the Universe, to what his most spontaneous attention is turned. Life is tension in the mechanical sense of the word; tension presupposes a spring, which produces and maintains it, and the spring, in turn, requires some thing to which it is attached in order to stretch itself; something that, pulling on it, provokes its dynamism.
I have asked myself many times what is the characteristic vital spring of this type of man, predominant in Argentina. To what is his life turned, radically turned? The bodily and psychological apparatuses with which he is endowed for living are magnificent: they have the elasticity, impetus and freshness proper to all zoological youth. For this reason everything attracts him, gives him savor, disquiets him. Hence his universal curiosity, his all-embracing appetite. He approaches the sciences, the arts, the pleasures, the sports, the political struggle, ambition, business, everything, in short. But there is the fundamental distinction that must be made if one wants to arrive at a true psychology. Our life is not the functioning of our bodily and spiritual apparatuses. All that is nothing more than the machine with which we live. Our life begins when a mysterious principle, which is character, sets all those mechanisms in motion according to its inspiration[153]. Thus it results that the Argentine, mechanically attracted by all those things thanks to the excellence of his psychophysiological apparatus, has not turned his life to any of them.
There is an old notion that must be rehabilitated, giving it a more important place than it has ever had: it is the idea of vocation. There is no life without vocation, without an intimate call. Vocation proceeds from the vital spring, and from it is born, in turn, that project of oneself which in every instant is our life. Sometimes the vocation of the individual coincides with the forms of life that are named according to the offices or professions. There are individuals who, indeed, are vitally painters, politicians, businessmen, religious. There are many, on the other hand, who exercise those professions without being them vitally. Well then; I believe that professional vocations are exceedingly rare in Argentina; or said inversely: that the typical Argentine has not turned his life, in a spontaneous way, to any particular occupation. Not even to pleasures. It is an error to attribute to the criollo a sensual vocation, or, widening more the orbit of enjoyments, an epicurean one. All those vocations call the person outside himself, and make his life consist in a forgetting of himself, in a radical enthusiasm and surrender to those things. It is not only the sage or the religious who surrender to something distinct and transcendent to them, but also the pleasure-seeker. It is not so easy as is supposed to be truly sensual or epicurean.
In this way I arrive at a first formula, which clarifies for me a little the impression produced on the European by the man of the Plata: the Argentine is an admirably gifted man, who surrenders to nothing, who has not irrevocably submerged his existence in the service of something distinct from himself. Now, the European is of all known men, today and yesterday, the one who most surrenders himself. Neither the Asiatic nor the Greco-Roman has felt so essentially life as mission, as service to something, beyond himself. For this reason he has been the most creative. To live for him consisted in doing things. The Stoic endures life with dignity; that is, destiny, which he sees, therefore, as a cosmic power external to him, just as the rock would see the sea, which beats upon it. The European surrenders to life, to destiny, and, therefore, makes of destiny his very life, takes it and accepts it. This I call feeling life as mission[154].
But the Argentine tends to slide over every concrete occupation or destiny; he does not give himself to it fully, he remains in reserve behind it, he does not merge with it. It is inevitable that he seem to the European superlatively frivolous. There is no likelihood that without radical surrender to a way of life, the gestures, acts, ideas, emanations of that life possess full substance and density. Everything the subject does in such a disposition will seem no more than gesture and feint. The Argentine, not resolving to forget his own being in something beyond him, to submerge himself in some mission, is a man who does not accept destiny. He knows how to suffer it with fortitude —the man of the Plata is very brave before destiny—, but he does not assume it.
I regret not knowing well the secret zone of erotic relations in Argentina, because that most delicate territory would be the most appropriate place to confirm or dismiss my diagnosis. Is the Argentine a good lover? Does he have a vocation to love? Does he know how to become enraptured? Or, on the contrary, more than loving, does he take pleasure in seeing himself loved, seeking thus in the erotic event one more occasion to become enthusiastic about himself?
Because to this we come necessarily: if the type of man we scrutinize has not turned his life to any occupation or thing in which it seems to forget itself and become enraptured, to what is that life turned? What is it that interests the person most in the universe?
Once the question is posed thus, it will be judged that only one answer is possible: the person who is not radically interested in anything, is interested only in himself. Such a disposition is usually called egoism. Was so long and difficult a detour necessary, to end in the discovery that the Argentine is an egoistic man? The truth is that the result would not be worth the trouble. But moreover it would be a gross error. A type of humanity cannot be defined by a defect. The way of being we investigate may facilitate the frequency of certain defects. What is more, every way of being drags with it a repertoire of kindred degenerations, just as each bodily constitution —obesity, thinness, athleticism— predetermines a certain class of illnesses. In Buenos Aires I have heard many Argentines complain of the egoism frequent in their compatriots. But, in my judgment, this qualification is erroneous. With egoists one does not make in a century a people of the bearing that Argentina has today. Moreover, that supposition of congenital egoism explains none of the other peculiarities.
È inevitabile che all’europeo sembri superlativamente frivolo.
No; it is something else. A distinction, subtle at first glance, puts us on a very different track. This type of man has not, indeed, turned his life to anything, but neither is his person what most interests him. What most interests him, what worries him is… the idea he has of his person.
Now, egoism consists in serving nothing outside oneself, in not transcending oneself. The egoist is a man without an ideal.
But the Argentine is a frenetic idealist; he has turned his life to a thing that is not himself, to an ideal, to the idea or ideal he himself has of himself.
This seems to me something more interesting; this already deserves fixing one’s attention upon it, because it is a way of being a man not at all usual, most curious, most subtle.
The Argentine lives attentive, not to what effectively constitutes his life, not to what in fact his person is, but to an ideal figure that he possesses of himself. This image he has not formed on such or such a date during his existence, but, on finding himself living, he already finds himself with a splendid idea of himself. It is not a precise idea, composed of such or such determined attributes; it is not that he believes himself a sage, an Apollo, a great politician, etc. That would be simply vanity. He does not know well what he believes himself to be, he cannot make precise the features of his own ideal physiognomy, but he feels that he esteems greatly that imprecise character that turns out to be himself. There is no way to elude the only rigorous expression: the Argentine relishes himself. If these words are understood exactly, it will be seen that they do not imply by force essential vanity. What we like does not have to seem to us the best thing in the world. It is not a question of its value being greater or lesser. It is enough that it seems to us to have some, and that such as it is we like it.
Let us proceed. The Argentine likes the image he has of himself. In that imprecise overall image, of blurry qualities and attributes, there are, nevertheless, some clear traits. For example: one of its ingredients is Argentineness itself. Being of the Argentine nation, belonging to this people is a motive of elemental, indisputable, prior pride, which acts in every Argentine. Even he who by reflection arrives at a less favorable judgment of his people continues feeling that impulse in all its vigor, because, fortunately, it is a question of a primary spring, anterior and deeper than all reflections. The individual is born with a blind faith in the glorious destiny of his people, takes as already fulfilled all the grandeurs of its future, and, feeling himself a member of it, charges his private person with the glory of that collective future as a present. It is one of the great forces that push this country: the idea of the nation acts at once in the individual soul forming one of its axes, for that very reason, inseparable from it. In his most intimate being each individual lives radically from the idea of the collectivity, which —in spite of the frivolity in the detail of lives— assures this people a kind of patriotism that we Europeans hardly understand, unless it be the English. One would have to undo the person to dissociate him from his nation.
In a similar manner, although more confusedly, he inscribes in his image all the capacities, all the possibilities, which, being thus projected into the idea, become for him effective realities. For example: a young Argentine —almost, almost every young Argentine— sees himself as a possible great writer. He is not one yet, but his imaginary person is one at once, and what he sees of himself is not that reality of his, still insufficient, but this projection into the perfect. As is natural, he is enchanted with that self he has found, and will no longer seriously concern himself to make his possibility effective. He will not radically attend to whatever may actually happen to him in his existence, to the occupations he may exercise, nor even to what he writes, because since none of it, not even his production, is yet what is proper to a great writer, and he knows that he is one, it has hardly anything to do with him, he does not consider it as his true life, but as a mere external event that does not merit formal attention. He will make himself solidary only with the one thing that is in his power: the gesture, and, indeed, at once and without rest he will adopt the gesture that in his judgment corresponds to a great writer. Hence that so frequently Argentine writers begin by being great writers.
I avail myself of this caricature to clarify what I think by exacerbating it. Because it is not easy to say what I glimpse: that the typical Argentine has no other vocation than that of already being what he imagines he is. He lives, then, surrendered, but not to a reality, but to an image. And an image can only be lived by contemplating it. And, indeed, the Argentine is always looking at himself reflected in his own imagination. He is exceedingly Narcissus. He is Narcissus and the fountain of Narcissus. He carries everything with him: the reality, the image and the mirror[155].
Let it not be believed, without further ado, that this is as pure a defect as it seems at first. A dose of narcissism acts in every soul of elevated destiny. The vulgar man, who abandons himself to every circumstance of life, without demanding anything of himself, is not Narcissus simply because he does not esteem himself. In his last depth he despises himself and has horror of his own being, devoid of all quality. For this reason he tries not to keep himself present to himself, but prefers to forget himself. A disciplined existence, when it is religious, requires that the person constantly feel the presence of God, as a spectator and judge who prevents abandonment and the vile act. When it is not precisely religious, the haughty existence demands that we keep ourselves present to ourselves. And I do not hesitate to recognize that many things already achieved in Argentine life proceed from this cult of the idea of oneself, which constitutes the most authentic form of life in the average individual of that country. Of course, the superior qualities cannot be achieved thus. Thus we can bring to our person, put into it everything imaginable, but whose acquisition does not presuppose sacrifice, surrender to that very thing we want to bring to ourselves.
I would not be afraid to affirm that narcissism is a dimension of every sublime soul.
But the Argentine is too much Narcissus; he is radically so. He lives absorbed in attention to his own image. He almost never disengages from it to absorb himself in the occupations that integrate full life. He looks at himself, he looks at himself without rest. He stands with his back to life, his gaze fixed on his personal chimera. Hence that impression he produces on us and which we would express by saying that in the Argentine everything seems to us underscored, to begin with his physique. The evident excess of polish in dress is a consequence of this perpetual attention toward oneself. He is always visiting himself and needs to find himself always polished and repolished. In contrast, the Frenchman and the German, who are, though for different reasons, the two men most distracted from themselves, most given over to other things, are the ones who dress worst on this planet.
The tragedy of Narcissus is that, occupied exclusively in contemplating himself, his own image drowns him, that is, he does not live. Were he to live, his image would be the living one. But an image has only an imaginary, apparent, fictitious life. This is what is serious in the psychology of the Argentine. Not egoism, not vanity. His disposition favors exceedingly these two vices, and I will not hide that the most comical cases of vanity I have known, I have found in Argentina. But both defects, as I have said before, are natural degenerations of a certain way of being and do not primarily qualify the type of man I analyze. Egoism is a lack of attention to other beings and things. But what is serious about narcissism is not that it neglects others, but that it leads to neglecting one’s own real person, one’s authentic life. The individual becomes accustomed to denying his spontaneous being in favor of the imaginary character he believes himself to be. It leads to the strangest lack of solidarity with himself. By taking at every instant the posture that that unreal character would take, he renounces the sincere attitude that the real person would want to adopt. And so one day and another and always. In the end, intimacy remains annulled, atrophied, which is our only true treasure, which is the only effective power capable of creating in every order, from science, through politics, to love and conversation.
Septiembre, 1929
He who knows how to elude psychological trompe-l’oeils and has seen, as through a crack, the magnificent intimacy that the Argentine man comes to paralyze within himself by reducing himself to the enjoyment of his image, will grow impatient thinking of all that this people could already be —what it could have created in the highest orders— were it only to moderate that propensity. He will grow impatient that in the people with the most vigorous historical springs that exists today, an energetic minority has been lacking which might arouse a new morality in society, call the Argentine to himself, to his effective intimacy and sincerity, temper with rigor his narcissism, show itself intractable toward everything that is mere posture or role, and force him to live truly, to well, to spring from his inner richness, instead of maintaining himself in perpetual desertion of himself. The day such a minority teaches this man to accept deeply his individual destiny, to exist formally and not in gesticulation and representation of an imaginary role, Argentina will ascend automatically in the hierarchy of the highest historical qualities. Because the man of the Plata is one of the best endowed that there perhaps has been. He will grow so impatient, I repeat, that he will write this little essay.
At the end of it, we perceive that an extreme coincidence appears between Argentine society and the individual. As the former hieratizes in an all-too-solid State the idea it has of its own collectivity, so the individual paralyzes his life by supplanting it with the image he possesses of himself. The coincidence is not rare. Twenty-four centuries ago, Plato insinuated that in Society man is written in large letters and, vice versa, man transcribes in small letters what Society is.
It is natural that it be not easy for us to communicate with the Argentine. We seek his intimacy, and he presents us his ideal image, his role. Since the latter has no reality by itself, it will obtain only that which the individual strives to impose on us. Hence his interest in underscoring it incessantly, in making it known. Hence his perpetual defensiveness. Hence his limitless susceptibility.
To call tact the success in social dealing is an exemplary acuteness of the language. Because, indeed, it consists in not grazing the entity we have before us, not stumbling against its forms and features, or doing so softly and without shock. Whoever with foundation prides himself on possessing much tact can be sure of wounding almost no one in the worldly commerce. But in Argentina he would fail. Because he can vouch that his tact will allow him not to stumble against any reality, but since the Argentine is not usually what he really is, but has moved to live inside the character he imagines himself to be, tact serves for nothing. What is impalpable is not touched. For this reason in Buenos Aires every movement one makes wounds someone, violates some secret personality, offends some intimate phantom.
The Argentine, worried that we recognize his personal phantom, will remain armed before us. If a superior culture and other kinds of brakes do not keep him in this defensiveness, the insecurity he feels with respect to himself, the urgency of nourishing with our recognition the faith in his image that at every instant he loses and regains, will make him advance to aggressive manners.
This is the origin of a human modality whose frequency is characteristic of Argentina. If one wants to penetrate the secrets of a country, it is well to notice the words of its language that cannot be translated, above all when they signify ways of being. The reason is obvious. If the equivalent is lacking in the language of other peoples, it is because in them the signified reality does not exist or exists unusually. In contrast, the existence of an untranslatable word reveals that a certain class of facts forms in that society a compact mass, and imposes itself on the mind demanding a denomination. Thus, the Spanish word cursi cannot be rendered in any other language. The fact it enunciates is —in rigor, was— exclusively Spanish. If one analyzed, magnifying glass in hand, the meaning of cursi, one would see in it concentrated all Spanish history from 1850 to 1900. Cursilería as an endemic, can only be produced in an abnormally poor people that finds itself obliged to live in the atmosphere of the European nineteenth century, in full democracy and capitalism. Cursilería is one and the same thing as the lack of a strong bourgeoisie, strong morally and economically. Now, that absence is the decisive factor of the history of Spain in the last century.
The Argentine word to which I refer, indocile to every rendering, is guarango. If I were Argentine and, despite being so, managed to give my life a sense of service or mission and, at some moment, preferred to denominate this mission without solemnity, with comic nonchalance, I would say that I was going to dedicate my existence to the overcoming of guaranguismo. As every vice is a fermented virtue and the degeneration of some good quality, in guaranguismo the best springs of the Argentine soul are hidden, deviated.
The guarango or the guaranga feels an enormous appetite to be something admirable, superlative, unique. He does not know well what, but lives intoxicated with that vague marvel he senses himself to be. To exist he needs to believe in that image of himself, and to believe he needs to feed on triumphs. But since the reality of his life does not correspond to that image, and no authentic triumphs come to him, he doubts himself deplorably. To sustain himself upon existence he needs to compensate himself, to feel in some manner the reality of that strong personality he would like to be. Since others do not seem spontaneously disposed to recognize him, he will take up the habit of getting ahead himself in a violent manner. Hence that the guarango does not content himself with defending his imaginary being, but, to defend it, begins at once with aggression. The guarango is aggressive, not by natural exuberance of forces, but, on the contrary, to defend and save himself. He needs to make himself room to breathe, to be able to believe in himself, he will give elbows as he walks among the crowd to open his way and create himself a sphere. He will begin the conversation with an impertinence to break a breach in his neighbor and feel safe upon his ruins.
He will tactically feign not to recognize considerations, nor distances, nor ranks, nor rules of dealing. If he is an intellectual, his production will not consist in the expression of substantive ideas, but in empty attacks without congruence with what is attacked, at times in mere insults, whose explosion in the air gives him the pleasant impression that, indeed, he exists. The guaranga will produce these explosions by accumulating in her dress showy colors and ornaments, exaggerating her gestures without renouncing for this the verbal aggressiveness.
Feminine or masculine, the guarango will corroborate his imaginary superiority over his neighbor, subjecting him to jokes of the worst taste and if he is especially timid will resort to the anonymous. (Buenos Aires is the city of anonymous letters).
As can be seen, the guarango is the disproportionate and coarsest form of that propensity to live absorbed in the idea of oneself that the Argentine man suffers[156].
But let it not be forgotten that all that deplorable mechanism is moved originally by an enormous craving to be more, by a demand to possess high destinies. And this is a radical force much less frequent in the human races than is usually believed. The people that does not possess it has no remedy: it is the only thing that cannot be injected into man. One can invent the turbine, but not the waterfall that moves it. This must exist beforehand, miraculously. Dynamic supposition of everything else, the level of its energy predetermines the history of the individual and of the nation.
This dynamism is the fabulous treasure that Argentina possesses. I do not know —I repeat— any other present people where the radical and decisive springs are more powerful. Counting on such elemental impetus, on that frenetic decision to live and to live in a big way, one can make of a race whatever one wants. For this reason, a good connoisseur of peoples, although a passer-by, I have trembled passing by a possibility of high history and optimum humanity with as many carats as Argentina. A symptom of that trembling and nothing else are these pages where I have tried to keep the equidistance between flattery and humiliation.
September, 1929
