Each hour that passes without the groups of the ‘right’, until now undecided, defining their attitude with respect to the Régime, intensifies the evil. Because it is evident that each one of those hours will oblige the republicans the more to prepare themselves energetically for the defense of the Republic. About this it is fitting that there be no doubt.
Hence that so copious is the responsibility attached principally to the greatest champion of all those hosts, to Mr. Gil Robles, young victorious athlete, whose parliamentary initiation I witnessed pleased, from the place of torment that was my seat. No one, I suppose, will begrudge him the recognition that he has fought like a brave man and has earned his good success with his fists. This is not, let it be noted, allowing myself any appreciation, either positive or negative, about the likelihoods of his political future. It is not the hour to speak of that. I am only forced to censure once more that he has fallen into demagogy. Because I presume that he will not consider demagogic only to harass the masses of workers, when it has been so evident that a demagogy of the devout women was possible.
He has around him some perspicacious counselors. These cannot have failed to see, nor suppose that the rest of us have not seen it, this very important fact: that by all the circumstances these elections have given the maximum possible seating of the ‘rightist’ forces. The chest has been scraped to the bottom. There is no more. The sick have been taken out of bed. The old women of the passive classes have been extracted from the garrets. The nuns have been led to the polls dressing them in short skirts and with their hair flowing in the wind. I censure none of this, not even the last thing, which is more debatable. I only want to make known that there is no more. And this is decisive for putting measure and continence in the future illusions of the ‘right’. It is a loyal warning that does not pretend to stretch to the impertinence of a piece of advice.
On the other hand, one cannot forget that behind Mr. Gil Robles stands the figure of the Church. And in this hour of our national path —path of fortune or path of bitterness, but ours— there can be no equivocations in the attitude of a power like the Roman; power, without doubt, very elevated, but also extranational power. He has a certain right to say this who did all he could, even though he could very little, in the most difficult hour, so that the Church should remain exactly in the proper place.
