Abstract
An essay: the authentic Intellectual is not the writer, professor or philosopher, which are social roles. Every social form arises as one individual’s creative destiny and survives as an empty shell — a “post” — that anyone may fraudulently occupy (Caesar, Victor Hugo, Valéry).

The Intellectual of whom we speak here is not the «writer» nor the «man of science», nor the «professor», nor the «philosopher». All these are names of trades or professions, that is, social figures, public profiles that the individual adopts and that do not guarantee in the least the authenticity of an incoercible intellectual vocation in the man who exercises them. But here we treat only of the Intellectual who truly is one, whatever his apparent and notorious occupation. Being an intellectual is not a thing that has to do with the social self of man. One is not an intellectual for others, with this or that purpose, in order to earn money, to shine, to hold oneself up in the stormy sea of the collectivity. One is an intellectual for oneself, in spite of oneself, against oneself, irremediably.
There is no doubt that those trades and professions would not exist if there had not been men who were writers, men of science, professors or philosophers in this original, authentic and irremediable form. Everything that is a social figure arose as the creative destiny of an individual. But there it is!, that form of life that this man created and fatally was, when he disappeared remained as a shell evacuated of effective personal content; it remained as a public «post», as an impersonal mould within which anyone could fraudulently lodge himself. Everything social, everything collective, is, in this sense, fraudulent, inauthentic —it is gesture, manner, title and mask. Most of the intellectuals who go about are not intellectuals, of course, but live playing the intellectual, sometimes correctly, serving with honesty and no small utility the trade to which they have socially committed themselves, the «post they occupy». This expression of our language is exact. It reveals to us that the post is a form of something human but hollow —hollow precisely of effective humanity. That hollow has to be filled or occupied by someone who sometimes serves the purpose and sometimes, most often, does not. It is all the same! Society contents itself with a minimum compliance or filling of the post. It says to itself, as that humble Andalusian maker of holy images used to say when beginning to paint, conscious of his null skill: «If it comes out with a beard…, Saint Anthony, and if not…, the Immaculate Conception!» Thus it has always happened and in all orders. First it occurred to Julius Caesar to be, with a certain originality, Julius Caesar. When they assassinated him, the Roman collectivity felt the need that Caesar should continue to exist. But the individual Caesar had departed forever. Of him there remained only the hollow, that is, the profile of his need, felt by the Roman world. And Caesar was, from then on, that solidified hollow —a post, a magistracy that lasted five centuries. The post, the magistracy, par excellence, that there has been in the world. But by an extreme chance it happened that not a single one of the innumerable subsequent Caesars was anything even remotely like Caesar. Many occupied the space «Caesar», but none was he.
Likewise, a hundred years ago, there was in France a man who was a kind of poetic hurricane or living tide of lyricism. He was called Victor Hugo. Like an elemental power —I mean, hurricane, syzygy—, he shook and flooded all of French life. His poetry is coarse, without quality, without arcane tremblings, but it is Cyclopean, magnanimous, Herculean, Michelangelo-like. In audacious rhymes he sang love, woman, the child, the autumnal leaf, the old legend, the great battle, he deified Napoleon I, stoned Napoleon III, verbalized about «l’Humanité». There is no thing of France and of man before which he did not sonorously shake his enormous cowbell, in a magnificent, universal, carnival. It is understandable that the French saw in him something that had not existed since Virgil, Homer and Dante: the Poet of a people, lyricism as an institution. But since then France has obstinately insisted on always having a Poet, as it had a President of the Republic, and velis nolis has filled by force that post, that great public hollow. Hence the tragi-comic situation of poor Paul Valéry, last mandarin of French letters, needless to say, an authentic Intellectual, but short of breath, not at all popular, a mannerist, with a scanty capital of things to say and, like every poor mind, obliged, in order to be, to contort himself. Of this man, who would have been an excellent contributor to a more or less regional review, there was made, by fulmination, the Poet of France. And since then the egregious bonhomme has had to live galloping breathlessly after his own justification.
Let us not, then, confuse things. Here we speak of the Intellectual who is intellectual with desperate authenticity, who is so beyond remedy, by inscrutable and inexorable decree of God. As the Caesars lacked caesarism, the world is full of intellectuals without intellectuality or with a precarious dose of it. Nevertheless, let us not presume that the Intellectual is, by force, very intelligent. Also in this it is fitting to avoid confusions. Intellectual is the name of a vocation. Talent is the name of a gift. And although the former usually coincides with the latter, there are occasions when they do not go together. One can have an energetic vocation and not have talent. One can have talent and no vocation. As it is prudent to count on the worst, almost everything I am going to say of the Intellectual holds even if we suppose him slow.
A few years after beginning my literary labour —it is, then, a long time ago— one fine day I had the intuition that the Intellectual, who had been for two centuries the predominant figure in the societies of the West, was very soon going to be centrifuged out of public consideration and, with the dialectical extremism which is the gait of history, from being everything was going to pass, without intermission, to being nothing. Nobody suspected such a thing then because still, and even several years later, the Intellectual seemed to enjoy the hour of his greatest predominance. Hence I pride myself not a little on having had at so early an hour this glimmer of the future. Moreover, I fitted my life to it, of course, sparing myself a limine not all certainly, but many of the errors and blunders into which others have fallen. I have never counted on being seriously taken notice of, and I was not and am not willing to accept the fiction that I am heeded.
That intuition visited me at the date which, as I said in the recent lecture on Vives, tends to be the age at which the Intellectual has the first and impassioned encounter with the great themes and the great ideas that he is going to develop in the rest of his existence. For that age is not just any. Living chronology is very rigorous. One year is not the same as another. It is the twenty-sixth year. No doubt there are exceptions and some very clear, casuistic ones. For example, in the ideas of formalist thought, such as the mathematician’s, an anticipation is frequent. But in the most substantial, most human themes, it is the twenty-sixth year that is the illumined day of the first ecstasy in which the great gipaetos, which are his future ideas, sink their claws into the brains of the thinker and snatch him aloft, like an innocent sheep. Because the great ideas are not ours, but we are their prey. They no longer leave one for the rest of one’s life: fierce and tenacious, they ceaselessly peck at the viscera of Prometheus. Almost every Intellectual has been ill of the liver. After all, that date of life is nothing mysterious. It is the year in which we normally cease to be predominantly receptive, and flinging on our backs the knapsack of what has been learned, we turn to the universe with intact retinas.
And what made me foresee the dethronement of the Intellectual was noticing that the crowds were going to take possession of the historic controls and that these crowds were profoundly uncultured because the intellectuals had committed the tremendous error of creating a culture for intellectuals and not for other men. It is to be noted that the great initiators did not want this. Neither Bacon, nor Galileo, nor Descartes, nor Shakespeare, nor Cervantes. As always, it is the heirs who spoil everything, the rich young gentlemen who are born already on the land won by their forebears.
But let us leave all this. For one cause or another, we already have the Intellectual exonerated from his social pre-eminence, on foot, hand to hand with the rest, thrown back on himself, like any man among the any-men. This is the plane on which his peculiar human condition turns out most interesting.
As happens with every essential mode of being a man, to the Intellectual being one seems the most natural thing in the world, and he begins by believing that all the other citizens are like him. For this reason it is an essential mode of humanity: it includes everything human but oriented in a certain direction, and he who is in such a mode naively believes that that is being a man, confusing others with himself, like Charles III, who, having never approached any woman but his own, a red-haired Saxon, believed that all women smelt of Russian leather, because such is the smell of red-haired women.
Thanks to this the Intellectual lives a good part of his life in a permanent quid pro quo. In his dealings with others he starts from supposing, as a matter of dead certainty, that they are there for the same thing as he, that they belong to his same tribe. His own existence is so marvellous that he would feel a cordial terror if he discovered that others do not share in it!… Because it is the pure truth: the existence of the Intellectual is marvellous. He lives permanently on the summit of a Tabor where incessant transfigurations take place. Every instant and every thing is for him adventure, phantasmagoria, great spectacle, melodrama, aurora borealis. His calendar is made up of pure holidays. He spends his life, literally his life, working. But can what the Intellectual does be called work? His work consists precisely in conjuring up a perpetual festival. It is understandable that other times suspected in him a certain divine condition. Does God work? Because God never stops making, above all the God who is the Supreme Maker. Were those Genesis days working days? Do we not have the impression that God grew sad the day he resolved to rest like a bricklayer? Will there not be a slight error of expression in the biblical text? Will it not be that after having created the world and having nothing else to do, when the first Sabbath came, he put on his spectacles and set about composing a sonnet entitled: The world? The verbal error would be understandable, because making a sonnet, is it a work or a delight? Distances saved, the Intellectual, whether he wants to or not, is always undoing and redoing everything around him. Imagine that we were attending the first days of Genesis. What a spectacle! There has been no other ballet like it! What a Nijinsky, Adam! What a Pavlova, Eve! And the authentic bird of authentic fire! Well, all the days of the Intellectual are a bit like that: he witnesses once and again the birth of things and enjoys for the first time the grace that they are what they are. He goes from surprise to surprise. His everyday life is made of exclusive surprises. He carries his pupil dilated with wonder. He walks hallucinated. He is drunk from birth. He has the demented air that an archangel takes on when he moves into an earthly neighbourhood.
Needless to say: contemplated from a certain angle he seems a lifelong naif and one always fallen from the moon. He takes a long time to find out that his dealings with his neighbour are ridiculous. He takes a long time to discover that the neighbour is not an intellectual, but precisely the Other, the absolutely Other. He had always noticed something strange in his conversation with the neighbour. The thing never went well. It was as if the wheels of the colloquy lacked lubricant. At every thrust upward the neighbour opposed his ballast, when he did not pull downward. But in the end there comes a day when the matter is clarified. He sees, finally, transparently that the dissonance is not accidental nor caused by partial motives: it is not a difference of temperaments or humours nor of gifts. It is an integral discrepancy. The greatest there can be. It is a matter of two radically opposed ways of taking life, of being in the universe. When he discovers this, the Intellectual feels deep shame, a sudden modesty. He understands that he has made a fool of himself and that he has done nothing else. It seems to him that he has lived naked before others, with a nakedness even graver than the exhibition of the skin, because he has spent his life showing others his last intimacy: what he thinks, what he feels about the world, about things, about other men, about the past, about what is happening, about the germinating future. Now he notices that doing that is an indecency, that being an intellectual is a condition that must remain hidden, like being a thief, like being a spy, like being a prostitute. Thinking about things —with a conceptuose or poetic thinking— is something shameful. At the same time, he feels desolation, anguish, for the neighbour upon finding out to what radical point he is not an intellectual. Before he believed that he was one, perhaps, less than he, that maybe precious gifts were lacking to him, that life forced him to repress the leaps of his intellectuality. This last thing had moved him many times, had seemed to him heroic. That man had to feed twelve of a family! For that and for nothing else, he could not take life as he did! Although the intellectual also sometimes has a big family… But now, knowing that it is none of that, he finds himself with a new and piercing enigma. How can the neighbour live being the Other? What kind of existence is that?
Then, as if to erase a nightmare from the board of his forehead, he passes his hand over it and says to himself: This must be put in meridional clarity! What difference is there between the life of the Other and mine? Here it is:
The Other lives installed in a world of things that are once and for all what they seem to be. Not even by chance does he put them in question. Precisely this activity of putting things in question is the one he does not exercise and even ignores. For that reason they have for him a definitive character and the whole world is that which is there, no more and just as it is there. Among those things that are to the Other there are some enigmatic, mysterious, unknown ones, but these characters do not arouse in him any special reaction. They seem to him qualities of things as real and normal as colour or form. They do not unsettle him. There is for him no difference between what he believes he knows how it is and what presents itself to him as enigmatic. There is for him no knowing or not knowing. His relation to things is one of simply counting on them. Just as he knows that bodies are heavy —that is, he counts on their weight— so also he counts on cancer being a mystery, on the existence of the universe being arcane, on the fact that it is unknown why societies ascend and decline.
His life excludes all re-acting upon what surrounds him to make it questionable, to analyse it, to unmake it, to turn it into phantom and spectre. On the contrary, his life is going to consist in holding to what is there, in moving within that unquestioned, solid, compact and definitive world, lodging himself in it, manipulating things, using them, exploiting them to his advantage as best he can. He is a born egoist. What matters to him is to get ahead, to do his business, to have a good time for himself and his own. If he is honest, with decorum. If not, with trickery. Since the world nor anything in it worries him in the least, he is free to occupy himself tranquilly with his own interest, be it his person or his family or his political party or his fatherland. Always and only his own.
Salvate le distanze, l’Intellettuale, voglia o no, sta sempre disfacendo e rifacendo tutto intorno a sé.
No pretendía tener ideas.

The Intellectual does not, then, stumble upon the Other for particular and concrete motives. He stumbles upon him, of course, because his primary vital attitude is the inverse and from the first gesture or word he should have noticed it. The world that the Intellectual encounters seems to him to be there precisely for him to put it in question. Things are not for him fully by themselves, because he does not leave them tranquilly there, but at once he analyses them, decomposes them, looks at them from within, seeks their back, in short, converts them from supposed things into problems. At first sight it seems that he is a destroyer and one always sees him with the viscera of things between his hands, like a slaughterer. But it is all the contrary. The Intellectual cannot, though he would, be an egoist with regard to things. He makes a question of them. And this is the maximum symptom of love. They are not there to be exploited without more, as the Other does, but his life is service to things, worship of their being. Worship, as were all strong worships, is bloody; it is undoing them, crumbling them in order to remake them in their supreme splendour. He knows that things are not fully if man does not discover their marvellous being which they carry covered by a veil and a darkness. Hence for the Intellectual living means going frenetically busy so that each thing truly comes to be what it is, exalting it to the plenitude of itself. Behold how and why it turns out that things are only what they are when they are to the Intellectual. This is sometimes presaged by Woman. But this, of course, deeply irritates the Other. But the irritation is here inoperative. Reality is so, without remission. And the things that the Other uses and abuses, that he handles and exploits in his sordid existence, were all invented by the Intellectual. All of them. The automobile and the aspirin; flower, song and woman. Or did you believe that all those things, those marvellous things were there, thus, without more? Now you are going to see. Now that the Intellectual, as so many times in history, is going to disappear or little less, to submerge himself like the grebe into the deep. The deep, par excellence, is silence. You are going to see how the marvellous goes disappearing from the face of the earth and life, even that of the Other, loses grace, tension and frenzy.
For things to be, whether one wants it or not, the Intellectual is needed. What the Other uses as realities is nothing but a heap of old ideas of the Intellectual, ancient petrefacts of his fancies. If only the Other inhabited the planet nothing would be what it is. In its truth every thing is legend, axiom, verse and myth. For that reason the Other ends up also irritating the Intellectual. It irritates him that this man does not let things be, does not occupy himself with them, but vilely, pitilessly, irreligiously exploits their appearances. For the Intellectual the Other is an atheist, the atheist of everything. He is the man without tremor before the divine, which is everything. To live in the world without making a question of it would seem to the Intellectual parasitism.
It was fitting to say this now that the Intellectual no longer exists socially, that he is a pariah and a malefactor.
But the certain thing is that as soon as the Intellectual realizes that the neighbour he has before him is the Other, he not only corrects the error of his old dealings with him, but feels for him a true enthusiasm. Like every thing that is authentic, it moves him. And he takes pleasure in seeing him as what he is, as a laborious and stubborn ant that, falling and rising among the gigantic blades of grass, stumbling on this and on that, carries to its own, without more literature, the copious seed it has had the luck to find. What the devil, long live the Other! What the Intellectual cannot bear are the falsifications with which the planet is crammed today. Because there is the pseudo Intellectual, who is nothing but the Other, with the mask of writer, of man of science, of professor, of philosopher. And there is today, above all, this: that the Other, the pure Other, is very difficult to find. Because the modern Intellectual had, as I have said, the atrocious slip of creating a culture of ideas. It is evident that all culture is made with ideas, but these ideas must be principally ideas of things, of feelings, of norms, of enterprises, of gods. They have no reason to be ideas of ideas. And the culture of recent centuries has been increasingly intellectualist. The result was that the Other has filled himself with ideas, and, incapable of handling them, of dominating them, pretends to live by ideas and to have, of course, his ideas. I have already said that for the Other only his own exists. Before this did not happen. He did not pretend to have ideas. He lived by traditions, by beliefs, by fervours and by rancours, which is his natural regime of life. But now he pretends to have opinions, a thing for which he is not made. It is painful to observe how his hand of a mental chimpanzee struggles to seize the needle of the idea. The result is inevitable. Upon entering the Other an idea automatically turns into the contrary, into a dogma. Dogma is what remains of an idea when a steam-hammer has crushed it. And it is the universal scene we attend. The Other, who in his spontaneous existence was, in his way, admirable, put to thinking is a steam-hammer that crushes ideas, and as these go in the heads of the Intellectuals, he crushes, by the way, the heads of the Intellectuals.
I understand very well the periodic strangulation of the Intellectual that takes place in history. I understand that this man, who always goes about behind things and who himself is not a thing, but something fluid, igneous, magnetic, angers and disquiets the Other.

Perché le cose siano, voglia o no, ci vuole l’Intellettuale.
