Abstract

Parliamentary satire: Ortega mocks a deputy who, while discussing the Barcelona revolt, dismisses in passing “this revolutionary lyricism, baleful like all lyricisms”. A piece of manners, not philosophy.

¿Qué iba a hacer?

After having attended with some attention the parliamentary debate of July, there remain in memory, behind the great political emotions that it aroused, not a few minute reminiscences that solicit meditation and commentary.

I remember, for example, that more than once, listening to this or that orator, I caught myself reasoning in this way: when the hazards of this human life, where confusion reigns and the absurd governs, bring a man endowed with very scant intellect to the grave trial of attacking or defending himself before a Parliament, it is understood and justified that that man burst out in some extravagant affirmations about that which is being discussed. Better would be, of course, that each one weighed his own capacities and fled from trades and magistracies instituted so that more complicated natures may exercise them; but, in short, arriving through others’ or personal errors at the dangerous point, shall we not forgive him who, unable to offer us better matters, expounds the question badly, reasons it clumsily and even slides honestly to the point of manifesting stupidities? Certainly yes; the Congress would not fulfil its representative mission if men ingenious, knowledgeable, severe and owners of a refined taste abounded within its enclosure. If in the Spanish Parliament so many virtues predominated, I would feel moved to declare that it did not represent Spain loyally. I am not moved, then, by an excessive purism nor a romantic demand.

Nevertheless, it is frequent that a gentleman deputy, constrained to speak on a subject, does not content himself with spreading his ignorance about it, but that in digression, in parenthetical remarks, he goes ahead to make light incursions into matters about which there is no dispute, which are not on the order of any day, and returns from them loaded with some profound ineptitude. Then the discreet listener begins to feel anger and to perceive that his benevolence is narrowing. What excuse shall we give to the gratuitous extravagances? If someone asks for the floor to speak of the budget, we previously accommodate our spirit to listen to every kind of financial solecisms; but we do not arm ourselves against some theological absurdity, and when it presents itself, in a sudden manner, it gives us no room to take the patient posture that makes theological errors less incisive.

Now I recall a very curious case of what we can call gratuitous extravagances or also superabundant simplicity. A deputy was speaking who, as I have heard, was governor of Barcelona, in that sad season of the African war. It is understood that this gentleman spoke; it is justified that he displaced a small portion of parliamentary space and time. Neither should it be taken amiss that that gentleman did not stumble in his speech upon anything of wit and subtlety nor even less upon a profound and enlightening point of view. No one is forced to give more than he has. That deputy had been crudely alluded to; his administrative labour had been gravely censured. What was he to do?

But let the reader imagine that, after having listened to the reading of some articles inserted in radical newspapers, the orator exclaims: «This revolutionary lyricism, baneful like all lyricisms…» What does the reader think of it? Does he not find in such a phrase a paradigm of that superabundant simplicity, of that luxury in extravagance for which we found no excuse? Who could expect among the news about the Barcelona revolution so rapid, comprehensive and trenchant a judgement of an entire poetic genre? What has the Law of public order to do with the history of literature? Only an incessant intervention of Providence prevents us from going mad all at once, all the Spaniards. Blessed be God! So then, all lyricism?… So then, poetics too is at the mercy of the provincial governors? So that it is decidedly baneful?

The grave thing of the case is that the author of this affirmation has exercised authority and it is probable that another day he will exercise it; and as for a provincial governor, baneful is that which is susceptible to passing through prison, we can imagine the cells of Montjuich filled with poets with handcuffs upon their lyres.

But, unfortunately, nothing of all this will happen. From that phrase, from that apophthegm, there is discovered a very broad horizon, all of it occupied by the ignorance of its author in matters of Universal History and of the History of Spain.

What would become of poor Adam without lyricism? All art is lyrical in its seed: there is no art without lyricism. And as art is symptom and fruit of humanity, lyricism signifies the radical and distinctive power of man. For the animal there are only things, exterior world, that is, superficial; the dimension of space that is called depth is not, in the end, but a superimposition of infinitely thin planes. The true depth is that which man possesses, his intimacy, his ego, the world of feeling that provides nature with inexhaustible distances. This fourth dimension, sentimentality, gives relief to the Universe, saves it from its native superficiality.

And this is lyricism: to maintain before what is outside an intimate little garden, closed, free, an ego, a consciousness of the good and the discreet, of the beautiful and the ordered and the just. In this little inner place there is perpetuated the divine spiritual fermentation which then puts some aroma over the putrid carrion of nature, of the natural instincts; above all, of the radical instinct: conservation.

Where lyricism is lacking, culture stagnates and races rot, as the body decomposes whose soul has departed. And exact measure of the historical value of peoples is the formula of lyrical density. How can it not be so? Lyricism is interior life; interior life is personality; personality is plastic power, creative energy of realities, force to conform the hard matter of the exterior world according to our will and our idea. A people without lyricism is not a historical subject, is not a protagonist, does not make history; it is brought and carried by the kicks of chance.

Has Spain been a lyrical race? As one sees, the question does not get lost in the clouds, for where there is no lyricism all the best human substances are lacking and all the provincial governors are baneful.
