Berlin 9

The king has gone to Potsdam this afternoon. Two days he will remain in the Versailles of Frederick the Great and so will the philosopher. What will the religious spirit of our monarch feel upon entering Sans-Souci? Anything substantial could be given for a moment’s peering into that new spirit when the memory of old Fritz falls upon it like the shadow of a mountain. The fervent steps along the halls will awaken from the corners where the mice of scepticism still live, and as the crystal chandeliers tremble, the philosophical words will fly out of them fluttering. Oh, divine Sans-Souci, place of pilgrimage for men of free soul!

In the Panopticon of Castan, situated in the Friedrichstrasse, there are some wax figures; over the lintel is that of Don Alfonso in the uniform of a Spanish infantry general. On the threshold there are others that represent Frederick the Great and Francisco Arouet, called Voltaire; both are most fortunate. The first with his impertinent nose, laden with snuff, and his large, tranquil bovine eyes, tells a materialistic joke, and the second laughs and laughs in a most gallant posture. And it seems to us we hear the corrosive little laugh that transpires from those gaunt cheeks, from those lively and sensual little eyes, from all that fine fox-like profile. Voltaire in the figure is represented as an old man; but his feet are so and with such grace placed, that one does not know if he walks or if he dances. Parodying what Michelet says of the bird, I know not who affirmed that even when the man of the eighteenth century walks, one can tell he has had a dancing master.

King Alfonso sleeps today in Potsdam.

Let us make a summary of the impressions of these days. The French newspapers show eagerness in affirming that Berlin has received Don Alfonso without great rejoicing, and this is false. Those who have witnessed other receptions of sovereigns affirm that there has never been so much crowd in the streets nor so much rejoicing. The Prussian race is very sober in the expressions of enthusiasm and nothing fond of being inflamed by what is foreign; perhaps it has been more than two centuries without admiring anything that comes from outside, and perhaps also this is, either the symptom, or the cause, of its present solidity.

Having noted, then, this disposition of the Prussian people, it must be declared that it has received our monarch with very great affection. The hurrahs have always resounded after him, and Berliners, with whom I have spoken, assure me that the people has felt from the first moment the deepest sympathy for this child king of so old a people.

The attentions of the Kaiser toward Don Alfonso have constantly been, more than a duty of courtesy and hospitality, a show of true and personal affection toward the Spanish monarch. William II is a master of governing; without having won a battle in any campaign, he has managed to secure the imperial Constitution, and as the publicist Naumann says in his Current Politics, today there are more friends of the Empire in Germany than on the day after the proclamation of Versailles.

On the other hand, Don Alfonso’s journey to this nation must be a motive for commentaries very different from those that a royal journey abroad ordinarily motivates. Germany cannot represent for us a political direction; from other parts we are required. But instead Germany is precisely the nation whose influence in our moral and intellectual direction will have to be most fecund for us. The English are English; the French are, as Cánovas said, ‘Spaniards with money’; the Germans are not Germans, they have made themselves Germans in fifty years. This is what we have to learn in Germany and only there will we learn it: the manner of making ourselves Spaniards in a short time, the great German secret, the method. Public instruction is the spring of that secret.

In our classical age we possessed an organization of teaching that, saving the perspective of the centuries, corresponds very exactly to the current German system. I am not going to discuss the matter even from afar: space is lacking in these paragraphs for it; but it is time to note that the thought of our rulers, if it is to begin to build solidly, has to concern itself before all with the German school and University. And not to copy them, for that would be the gravest error, but to place themselves before the problem of Spanish culture in the same manner in which the Germanic legislators placed themselves before the German one. Let these be studied well, let the number of professors and students with grants be increased, let there be had a moment of decision to set aside the old pedagogical ideas, which today we are the only ones in the world to preserve.

When Don Alfonso returns to Spain and the memories of his very rapid journey go extinguishing, there will remain in his memory the image of two severe buildings, whose doors two sturdy soldiers guard. On the front of one of the buildings one reads: Universitas litterarum, and on that of the other: School of Commerce. Now let two things be noted: first, that the soldier is at the door, but nothing more than at the door. Second, that the University is as powerful a construction as the School of Commerce. In short, Germany is today the first nation in the economic movement, but its sons study in the gymnasiums six years of Latin.

Until the clear spring day has arrived in which the publicists and the café orators, the honourable deputies and the would-be arbitristas are convinced that culture is something that has to be taken totally, and that divided it is impossible and sterile, nothing firm will have been done in the hundred-times-begun regenerative pilgrimage. Today there is in fashion in Spain a formless and vague thing called ‘practicalism’, which consists in declaring sole panacea the technical and industrial teaching, and in protesting two miserable courses of Latin that are studied or, better said, that are not studied in the Institutes.

Emperor William II has today explained to him the latest mechanical invention, but tomorrow he has an orientalist professor called in so that he may put him abreast of the latest excavations carried out in the land of Mesopotamia by the Assyriological Society of Berlin.

Civilization, culture, is one and indivisible, and that country will invent and possess better machines where the Analytics of Aristotle are best commented.

Berlino 9
