Abstract
A short text: relativity can be studied as a botanist studies a plant, setting truth and error aside, to identify the spiritual species that bore it. The theory does not steer minds; minds, having spontaneously taken a course, made the theory possible.

The theory of relativity, the intellectual fact of highest rank that the present can boast, is a theory, and, therefore, it is arguable whether it is true or erroneous. But, apart from its truth or its error, a theory is a body of thoughts that is born in a soul, in a spirit, in a consciousness, just as the fruit on the tree. Now: a new fruit indicates a new vegetal species that appears in the flora. We can, then, study that theory with the same intention as the botanist when he describes a plant: setting aside whether the fruit is healthful or harmful, true or erroneous, attentive exclusively to filing the new species, the new type of living being that we surprise in it. This analysis will reveal to us the historical sense of the theory of relativity, what it is as a historical phenomenon.
Its peculiarities accuse certain specific tendencies in the soul that has created it. And since a scientific edifice of this importance is not the work of a single man, but the result of the indeliberate collaboration of many, precisely of the best, the orientation that those tendencies reveal will mark the course of Western history.
I do not mean by this that the triumph of this theory will influence spirits, imposing upon them a determinate route. This is evident and banal. The interesting thing is the inverse: because the spirits have spontaneously taken a determinate route, the theory of relativity has been able to be born and triumph. Ideas, the more subtle and technical they are, the more remote they seem from human affections, are the more authentic symptoms of the deep variations that are produced in the historical soul.
It is enough to underline a little the general tendencies that have acted in the invention of this theory; it is enough to briefly prolong its lines beyond the enclosure of physics, so that there appears before our eyes the drawing of a new sensibility, antagonistic to the one reigning in the last centuries.
