Lecture given in the great hall of the University of Granada during the commemoration of the fourth centenary of this University in 1932.
The University of Granada commemorates its fourth centenary. If this University becomes aware of itself in this festive hour, it will notice that, in order to occupy itself these days with its past and to devote itself to remembering, it has had to suspend its normal life, in which the past and recollection were not the primary thing, but, on the contrary, the future. Life is a task that is carried out forward. Our spirit is always in the future, preoccupied with what we are going to do, with what is going to happen to us in the moment that arrives. Only in view of that future, to forestall it and enter it well equipped, does it occur to us to think about what we have been up to now. We see our past as the set of means, capacities, experiences that will allow us to affirm ourselves in the future, that is, to continue sustaining ourselves in it, being in it. What is our University now, in these days? If in the future we are what we project, in the present we are what we do by virtue of that decision or project. And what this University does now is commemorate its fourth centenary, that is, remember. It is curious that man sometimes decides to do in the future instant precisely to occupy himself with the past, to remember. The word is marvellous: recordar, that is, to make pass again through the heart what once already passed through it; that is, to relive imaginatively what has already been lived. But note that recollection is not passive: if in our psychic mechanics it happens that an image of the past springs up again automatically, that is not remembering. Before that image, as before everything, man has to decide to accept it or not, and if he accepts it it is because he actively sets himself to remember; therefore, rememorating is not something passive, that happens to man, but something that he does.
To remember is not, then, something passive, it is a doing; it is not that the past comes of its own accord to us, but that we go to the past, return to it, thanks to that strange condition of man that allows him to move freely through all the dimensions of his time and to be equally future, present and past. Now this University is, in one measure or another, with one fullness and precision or another, its four centuries of history.
But that which I have called the doing, and which, it appears, is opposed to the simple happening to one, has a fundamental condition, and at the same time an obvious one; namely: that everything that is done is done for something, in view of something. But we already know what that something is, in view of which we do everything: it is our future, because the past and the present cannot matter to us of themselves. What matters to us is to be, to exist tomorrow —to live is to survive—; the rest is having lived. That is why remembering is done in view of the future, and hence it is that, if we analyze ourselves while we are given over to the memory, we shall observe that in rememorating we squint and that, while with one eye we remember the past, with the other we remain attentive to the future, as though constantly relating what was to what may come upon us. Recollection is the running start man takes to leap energetically over the future. And if not, what is the point of the effort this University devotes to occupying itself these days with its after-life? There is no doubt: it does so to affirm its future, to draw attention to itself, to found its right to survive tomorrow, among other reasons, upon the fact of its long history. To commemorate is to remember in community and publicly; commemoration is the solemnity of recollection.
And here is this University reanimating its four centuries of history. It sees what it has been, but notes at once that the details of its particular history, interesting though they be, represent only more or less anecdotal variations of what the whole Spanish University has been. In everything essential, in aspirations, in the relation with its surroundings, with the social powers, with the Church, with the State, with the people, with the gifts of the race, with the economy of its medium, its destiny has been the same as that of any other Spanish University. And therefore, wishing to touch with precision what it has been, it finds itself forced to ask: what has the Spanish University been? This is no longer anecdotal, this is already very important, this is already substantial. Not to be despised is what this University owes to Granada, but evidently it owes it nothing visceral. The province, the region —and you are not unaware that I am very much a regionalist—, do not represent historical substances; they are modifications of the great national entity that is the historically substantial. Therefore what this University has of University it owes not to what it has of Granadan, but to what it has of Spanish. In the commemoration we should, then, start from what the University has been in Spain.
But in attempting it we realize that what the Spanish University has been cannot be clarified unless we contemplate its peculiar destiny against the background of what the whole European University has been. Ours is born of the same inspiration and coincident impulse as the others of our Western world. Certain elementary presuppositions, certain vicissitudes of the first order are common to all. And it is evident that the most succulent thing in this commemoration would be to direct a glance at what the European University has been, which includes the Spanish and the Granadan, and to ask whether its future presents inklings of fair weather or of danger.
And so this University, sinking into its own past as a European University, relives the dramatic and glorious process that has been the history of this institution. It sees how from tiny and private centers of study that sprout with the spontaneity of mushrooms «in every place a little tranquil» during the beginnings of the Middle Ages, the great university bodies develop, which draw people from the most remote places of Europe and palpitate and tremble like unforeseen viscera within European society, constituting its most authentic novelty. For this is the first thing it befits to record: the University, the cultivation and teaching of knowledge organized as a public corporation, as an institution, is something exclusively European, which had not existed in any other society.
That is why I am wont to say that the University has been consubstantial with Europe. The thing most similar to it, the mandarinate of China, differs essentially. There it was solely a matter of the preparation of public officials. It was, then, exclusively an organ of the State as such. But in Europe, whatever the profit the State may have derived from the University, this signified a different and original principle, apart from, when not against, the State. It was Knowledge constituted as a social power. Hence no sooner does the University win its first battles than it constitutes itself with its own jurisdiction and original franchises. Against political power, which is force, and the Church, which is the transcendent power, the magic of the University arose as a genuine and exclusive and authentic spiritual power: it was Intelligence as such, exempt, naked and by itself, which for the first time on the planet had the audacity to be directly and, so to speak, in person, a historical energy. Intelligence as an institution! Is this truly, truly possible? I am not going to enter now into the subject, because it is not what in my primitive notes I foresaw, and I wish, in the general outline of what I say to you, to be strictly faithful to them.
L’intelligenza come istituzione!
Yo no voy a decidirlo hoy.
It is a fact that since the twelfth century there is heard without interruption, issuing from the bosoms of Europe, a sound that resembles nothing, but that, if it had to resemble something, would resemble a kind of humming of busy and restless bees, vagabond and stinging. It is the murmur the Universities make, a murmur which, like that of the internal-combustion engine in our time, was a new noise in the world. And in those centuries, whatever be the crossroads where you place yourself, you will see four motley crowds of men collide: a crowd of soldiers that the public power mobilizes, a crowd of merchants driven by interest, a crowd of pilgrims going to Compostela or to the Holy Land, and a crowd of those who were then called schoolmen, and today we call students. And it cannot be denied that in that concourse of so varied origin it is these who supply the gaiety, the insolence, the wit, the grace and —why not say it?— the pedantry. And this crowd of schoolmen was to be the one that won the game against the others. The thing is undeniable: in Europe the Universities won the game against the other powers, even against the strongest, because it is force, against political power. That game won by the schoolmen over political power is called revolution, and it is clear that I refer to the authentic one, for I am not disposed to call just anything revolution. They won the game against the other powers! But… did they win it forever? And behold, the undertow of recollection, as always happens, tears us away from the dead, harmless, danger-free beach which is the past, and hurls us once more into the sea of the future. In contact with it we again feel ourselves alive, because we again feel ourselves in danger, and, whether we will or not, we must swim to keep afloat. Life is a permanent consciousness of shipwreck and a need of swimming. The glance at the past, the commemoration, has done nothing but cure us of the dullness in which we lived and put us in raw flesh so that we may perceive well what the future has of characteristic as against the present and the past.
What is the essence of the future, of «all» future? Danger, problem. The European University has been something magnificent, glorious and triumphant; in the nineteenth century it reaches the maximum of its power; but what of tomorrow? What will tomorrow be?
The same, more, less?
What shall we do to answer this question? I believe the thing offers no doubt. We have but one road, one method: to compare the past with the present, that is, to take full account of the present so as to discover whether in it there are given the same causes that made possible in the past the healthy life or the triumph of the University.
I cannot, naturally, adequately study here the causes for which the University prospered and triumphed in the European past. The only thing I can do is to state the maximum cause, the one which, strictly, sums up and fecundates all the others.
Subject a living being, whose own organism possesses all plenitudes and faculties, to an unfavorable climate, negative of its zoological style, and you will soon see it waste away and succumb or, at most, drag itself along in a vita minima. Conversely, the feeble organism is corroborated and fulfilled in a favorable climate. A climate is nothing but an atmospheric regime in which certain physicochemical ingredients predominate. Well, that which we call a historical epoch is nothing but a moral climate, where certain valuations, certain preferences, certain enthusiasms predominate. Do the ambient preferences of our epoch coincide with the project of life that each one of us is; then our life succeeds easily! But, if the estimates of the epoch in which we live contend with the type of man we have to be, our existence is marred. This equation of coincidence or repugnance between our vital program and our epoch is one of the primary factors of that which we call «destiny».
We do not escape the circumstance; it forms part of our being, favors or impedes the project that we are.
When one goes over the history of the European University, which we imagine as a person, although a collective one, living, we note that its trajectory, its highs and lows, its humility and its splendor, advanced parallel to the enthusiasm that the European felt for intelligence. This is the decisive cause of the prosperity and triumph enjoyed by the university institution. The European, in his evolution, came very early to prefer and set above all other things of the Universe the intelligence. In the other historical bodies, in the Orient, in the Greco-Roman world, in the eccentric orb of Arabism, only a social minority believed radically in intelligence, and even this would have to be examined more slowly; but only in Europe does the case occur that almost the whole people feels a preferential enthusiasm for the intellectual, that it stakes its entire life upon the card of ideas; in sum, that it lives of ideas and for ideas.
So that the understanding of those who listen to me may not lose its bearings, I insert dryly the warning that it must not be supposed, merely because I am by profession and vocation an intellectual, that I approve this: living of ideas and for ideas. It is evident that every man has always lived with ideas, using them as an instrument «for» his life.
I say, then, without anticipating judgment, that the European has not limited himself to living with ideas, but has staked his life upon ideas, as the gambler stakes his entire fortune upon the knave of cups. In a climate or environment dominated by this preference, it was natural that the University should prosper and reach its culmination in the centuries that represent the empire, almost undivided, of Intelligence, in the modern epoch and above all in the nineteenth century. Is it likely that intelligence can be in the visible future as much or more than it has been up to 1900?
The date is not capricious, for in effect around it there begin to appear in Europe symptoms which afterwards have developed frightfully and which announced the change of historical climate in which we undisputably find ourselves today. The enthusiasm for intelligence declines, and the hostility to intelligence rises in high tide. Is this fact, as undeniable as it is universal in Europe, a profound reality or is it a passing phenomenon, due to an hour of weariness from the continuity of the uninterrupted, centuries-long effort dedicated to thought? Is it the odium professionis that the European suffers transiently? Whatever its meaning and value be one thing or the other, I repeat that the fact is unquestionable and that the University must look it in the face because its future depends on it. Intelligence is thought, is reason, and enthusiasm toward it means that we prefer above all to have reason. The attitude was a pretty one, it cannot be denied; for to all the things of the world was preferred the least thing-like thing in the world, the most ethereal, reason, the reasonable idea.
But if we now direct a glance at the European area, at politics, at social life, above all at the new generations, you find that already almost no one wants to be right. It is not that he is not right: it is that deliberately he could not care less whether he is right or not. What is it, then, that people want? Apparently, the idea of things does not interest them; they want the things themselves. That imperative of efficacy to which people today show themselves so docile and which they raise as flag and principle does nothing but express that brutal wanting of things. That is, not he who thinks them is esteemed, but he who wants them with resolution; intelligence is disesteemed, will is preferred: voluntarism succeeds intellectualism. The will! This is the new goddess since 1900. Will it be relatively definitive, will it inform a whole epoch like the other, will it be no more than a transient goddess, like a tourist taking a fleeting walk through Europe? I am not going to decide it today. But it is positive that the men of today incriminate the whole Modern Age, reproaching it precisely with what it considered its maximum honor: they reproach it with having done nothing but think, think… That besides this it has created a prodigious material civilization, which allows the new peoples to live better than man has ever lived, is something that is passed over and not granted it. It is blamed because it thought and thought. It is reminded that in one of the culminating instants of intellectualism, in romantic Germany, Schlegel had said that true life is nothing but an unendliches Gespräch, an infinite chat, an interminable conversation in which ideas are exchanged, and one issues from the other indefinitely, without final consequence, without ever ending, without terminating in a resolution.
L’entusiasmo per l’intelligenza decresce, e sale in piena marea l’ostilità all’intelligenza.
It is evident that for already not a few years, and throughout the whole extent of Europe, whatever be the forms of politics, a weariness and, as it were, a surfeit of that has supervened. Discussion wearies, and it irritates that it does not conclude, that is, that it does not lead to consequences, to decisions. As against intelligence, which seems to lose itself in the arabesque of its own dialectic, the other power of man rises: the will, which is the faculty of resolving or, at least, of resolving oneself. It would be an erroneous diagnosis not to see this change of historical style except in its most melodramatic political manifestations. No; beyond politics, and before it begins its operations, in the deep bosoms of Western life a change of valuation has been produced. It is not believed that enough has been done by thinking about things, and one begins to glimpse that intelligence does not justify, simply, itself, by the mere fact of being exercised.
Once this change of European preference is recognized, there arises in us unfailingly a question: And why has it happened? What sin has intelligence committed to be —at least apparently and transiently— overthrown and supplanted?
I have said that man always lives with ideas: of course! Finding himself in the circumstance or world he sets functioning, among others, his intellectual apparatus and, whether he wants to or not, forges ideas about the world, interprets it, and these ideas or convictions about what things are enter to form part of the circumstance. It is evident that the life of the Christian, for whom this world is nothing but an antechamber or mask of another more real one where God is present, is different from the life of the Marxist, for whom the last reality of the Universe is the process of economic production. To be shipwrecked in God or to be shipwrecked in the economic are different things, although in the end both are identically shipwrecks, are depending on someone or something that is distinct from us, is having to be outside oneself.
Precisely because our life is that, in an irrecusable way —need to sustain ourselves in a medium that is alien, unknown to us—, we have no remedy but to interpret our situation, to try to find out what that world is in which we swim as shipwrecked men and what is its relation to us. Now, this is philosophy. And that philosophy or interpretation of our life will be acute or blunt, elementary or know-it-all, spontaneous or pedantic, but what cannot be denied is that man, whether he wants to or not, practices it. He cannot live without interpreting his situation, without philosophizing. Hence the best summary of an epoch is its philosophy. I do not now discuss whether it is cause or effect of the rest; it is not that I want to give importance to philosophy; on the contrary, since I say that, whether they want to or not, everyone is a philosopher. For the case it suffices me to take it as the expression and symptom of a type of life, of an epoch. And what has been, reduced to its final figure, European philosophy, the interpretation of reality that has oriented existence in the modern epoch?
On its threshold, dressed in the Spanish fashion, in black, there rises a solitary man, but of the best company, a gentleman who has been, perhaps, the greatest genius of the West, the most original, who, eliminating all that is adventitious and received, is going to utter the authentic European truth: it is René Descartes.
And what did this man do?
Well, this man felt lost in life, found nothing in it secure. Note that that sensation of loss and insecurity is not something that happens to us at moments in life, but is life itself, although we do everything possible to hide it from ourselves. Descartes wants to find footing on something firm, to come upon authentic reality, to feel secure. It is the same to say that we feel lost as to say that we doubt. In effect, everything is doubtful; to life no absolute conviction is given as a gift: it is first doubt, perplexity. But then, says Descartes, if I doubt, at least it is certain that I doubt, and then he takes that great step, so simple and which is the step of modern Europe: it is indubitably certain that I doubt; but to doubt is nothing but to think. Eureka! We have found the indubitable reality: thought exists, and since I am that thought, I exist. I exist, then, because I think; I exist as thought, as intelligence. And that, thought, is the only thing there is.
For let us set aside all the rest, which Descartes adds: since that, his point of departure, is the essential, that is what, with one modulation or another, Europe is going to make itself solidary with, from 1650 to 1900: it is idealism.
If we go to the other end of that magnificent seventeenth century that «stabilizes» the European interpretation of life, we run into Leibniz, summit of Baroque thought. And we find that in him that idealism culminates. What in Descartes’s bon pas fermented implicit is going to be openly affirmed in Leibniz. The only reality is the monad, and the monad is thought and only thought, confused or clear. Moreover, each monad is isolated, «without windows», and its existence is reduced to an inner task of thinking and thinking itself, of coming to clarity with itself. The world is a mere projection of the intellectual subject, simple phenomenon and phantasmagoria. But both in that phantasmagoric world and in the reality of the monads, only one principle governs: the principle of sufficient reason. Never has intelligence reached a greater imperialism. For that principle declares that for something to exist it is necessary that it fulfill the requirement of «having reason», which is an intellectual requirement.
Do you see how the enthusiasm for intelligence makes of it the fundamental reality, strictly, the only one? This conviction is going to impregnate all European life, in all its orders, even though the average man does not realize it, just as one habitually does not realize the atmosphere one breathes. In that atmosphere the easy triumph of the University is understood.
Nevertheless, let us note that the ancient world had also opined, if not that thought was the only reality, at least that it was the fundamental one. But there is a radical difference: when the Greek speaks of intelligence, of the nous, he does not refer, for the moment, to his own, but to a principle or power that he seems to glimpse in the cosmos, in the world. The European, on the other hand, believed that the only reality was man’s intelligence, whether the individual one or that of the human species, as Hegel believed. And this brings a decisive consequence for the interpretation of our life. If the only thing that exists is intelligence and intelligence is man, it means that the only thing that exists is man, that man is left alone. Or said in another form: if the only reality is thought and I am thought, it will result that, for me, to exist is nothing but to think. Now, thinking is an intimate task, which I do within myself, without leaving myself, without having to count on anything alien to me. According to this, life in its effective reality would consist in being alone with oneself, within oneself, and not, as we have said, in the opposite, in having to sustain oneself outside, in the world, which, perhaps, is irrational, unintelligent, anti-intelligent perhaps, who knows if my enemy?
No, Sir Descartes: to live, for man to exist, is not to think. Your Grace —be it said with utmost respect and with all due measure—, Your Grace has suffered an error. No doubt, Your Grace has arrived, thinking, at the conclusion: I exist because I think; but remember that Your Grace set yourself to thinking, that you came to realize that you were thinking not simply of your own accord, but because beforehand you felt lost in a foreign, problematic, insecure, doubtful element, whose being was alien to that of Your Grace. You set yourself, then, to think «because» you already existed, and that existing of yours was a finding oneself shipwrecked in something that is called world and is not known what it is —which is doubtful—, hence, that it was something distinct from Your Grace —because of yourself, as Your Grace assures us, you cannot doubt. To live, to exist, is not to be alone, but on the contrary, not to be able to be alone with oneself, but to find oneself beset, insecure and prisoner of another mysterious, heterogeneous thing, the circumstance, the Universe. And to seek in it some security, as the shipwrecked man moves his arms and swims, Your Grace set yourself to thinking. I do not exist because I think, but on the contrary: I think because I exist. Thought is not the unique and primary reality, but on the contrary, thought, intelligence, are one of the reactions to which life obliges us; it has its roots and its meaning in the radical fact, prior and terrible, of living. Pure and isolated reason must learn to be vital reason.
Esisto, dunque, perché penso; esisto come pensiero, come intelligenza.
Mai l’intelligenza è giunta a maggiore imperialismo.
No, signor Descartes: vivere, esistere l’uomo, non è pensare.
This was the sin of intelligence: to believe that it was alone, that it was reality. Note that this is the sin of Lucifer when he pretends to be like God. For God means full reality. If Lucifer imagined being like God, it means that he presumed within himself all the conditions and all the ingredients for him to be full reality and not a reality obliged to count upon another superior one, upon God. Lucifer attempts to supplant God, as in idealism the intelligence rebels and aspires to declare itself the only reality. It is very well understood —and we shall soon see by what abundant series of serious reasons— that intelligence, the idea, falls into this error. It is indissolubly assigned to reality, or said in another, more obvious way: the idea is the idea «of» reality. Its role is that of a mirror, and the cleaner, the better. It reflects things and in this virtual sense contains them. If a mirror had consciousness of itself, it would easily fall into the illusion of having within itself the objects it reflects; and if moreover it had feet, it would set out walking believing that it could carry with it everything mirrored in it, that it was, then, mirror and mirrored thing. Aristotle says with great reason that the soul is in a certain way all things, since it thinks them. But the question and the danger lie in that being «in a certain way», in that almost-being. A minimal carelessness in the appreciation of what that «almost being things» which is thinking them may be, brings enormous and disastrous consequences. In the case of the mirror, note the radical perversion of its effective situation and role that its error would bring about, of believing that it truly carries in itself the things that, strictly, it only reflects. From being a servant of reality it would pass to being its master, its owner. That is why Lucifer cries: Non serviam!; intelligence, which, according to what we have glimpsed, is only an instrument «for» the radical reality that is the task of living, which is, then, constitutively, service, becomes an end of itself, declares itself independent. And it is certain that intelligence cannot serve any particular interest, on pain of annulling itself, but on the other hand, it is nothing but essential servitude to life. Of it it lives, in it it has its roots and from it receives its meaning.
In El tema de nuestro tiempo, which was published in 1923, but which gathers together lecture works of several years before, I summarized the problem of what was then still a future with these words: «Pure reason must cede its empire to vital reason»[103].
The crisis of intelligence —and with it of the University— can be mastered only through a reform of intelligence. Many years have I been preaching it under this same title —Reforma de la inteligencia[104]—: I announced, when no one suspected it, that the crisis was drawing near, which cost me remaining alone in Spain.
I believe that today, after thirteen or fourteen years, the meaning of that formula that no one then understood would appear clear to everyone.
But it is possible that someone may now ask me: And voluntarism, that voluntarism which since 1900 seems resolved to substitute intellectualism in its empire? Does it represent, in effect, the «stable» norm of the future? The curious man must ask himself with a certain peremptoriness whether an attitude like the voluntarist one, in which man believes he has to count only on his will, on his decision, is, in the end, very different from the intellectualist one. The descendant of Descartes believed that living was thinking or, what is the same, coming to agreement with oneself. Is there much distance from this to believing that living is resolving oneself energetically? Does this not mean that the same thing continues to be believed, without more than having shifted the accent from the intelligent potency to the volitive one? Does not voluntarism have all the air of the simple and exasperated form that the old idealism adopts, convulsed, before dying?
The explosion of voluntarism that has supervened in Europe for thirty years now —no less old is the date of its emergence— has opened a wide breach in the hermetic horizon where intellectualism held us, magically prisoners. This has been its role and its service. But it is not likely that voluntarism represents a perduring attitude. Man is, above all, will, because, above all, he has to do something to exist and, therefore, above all, he has to will and decide. Because man is primarily will, it is precisely for that reason that he afterwards also has to be intelligence. It is she who creates the projects among which the will has to decide, and for that she attempts to penetrate to the truth of the world and of man. I suspect that, once the experience of radical voluntarism has been thoroughly made, man will discover, again —at last!—, that he is not alone, that there are around him strange powers, distinct from him, with which he must count, and that there are above him superior powers under whose hand, purely and simply, he is.
