Abstract

A page on the landscape of El Escorial, a lyrical stone awaiting a generation worthy of striking its spark. Ortega disputes the founding charter: St Lawrence cannot fill those spaces; Philip II expressed there his own interpretation of the divine.

Over the landscape of the Escorial, the Monastery is only the maximum stone that stands out among the surrounding masses by the greater fixity and polish of its edges. In these days of spring there is an hour in which the sun, like a bubble of gold, breaks against the peaks of the sierra, and a soft light, colored with blue, with violet, with carmine, pours down the slopes and the valley, softly fusing all the profiles. Then, the built stone mocks the intentions of the constructor and, obeying a more powerful instinct, goes to confound itself with the maternal quarries.

Francisco Alcántara, who knows so much of things of Spain, is wont to say that, just as Castilian is the language in which, in a certain way, the dialects and languages of the Hispanic periphery are integrated, the light of this central Castile is a quintessence of the provincial lights.

This Castilian light is the one which, shortly before night arrives with the slow cow’s step across the sky, transfigures the Escorial to the point of seeming to us a gigantic flint that awaits the shock, the decisive commotion, capable of opening the veins of fire that furrow its most mighty entrails. Harsh and silent, the granite landscape awaits, with its great lyrical stone in the middle, a generation worthy of wrenching from it the spiritual spark.

To whom did Philip II dedicate this enormous profession of faith, which is, after St. Peter’s, in Rome, the creed that weighs most heavily upon the European earth? The charter of foundation puts these words in the mouth of the King: «Which Monastery we found to the dedication and in the name of the blessed Saint Lawrence, for the particular devotion that, as is said, we bear to that glorious saint, and in memory of the favor and victory that on the day of his festivity we began to receive from God». This favor was the victory of Saint-Quentin.

Here we have a documented legend that it is necessary to rectify, despite the document. Saint Lawrence is a respectable saint, like all saints, but who, to tell the truth, has not been wont to intervene in the operations of our people. Can it be possible that one of the most powerful acts of our history, the erection of the Escorial, has had no other significance than the gratitude to a transient saint, of scant Spanish reality? Saint Lawrence does not suffice for us: I am the first to admire that business of his that, finding himself well toasted on one side, he asked that they turn him over on the other; without that gesture humorism would not be represented among the martyrs. But, frankly, the patience of Saint Lawrence, admirable as it is, does not suffice to fill these colossal precincts.

It is indubitable that when several plans were presented to Philip II and he chose this one, he found in it his interpretation of the divine expressed.
