This little volume of verses[33] —which its author calls El pasajero— makes us witness the initiation of a new poet, the birth of a new muse. At every instant poetic voices people the air, some of which are full and harmonious, at least correct; but very few of them are original lyrical cries. Let us not be too hard with the lack of originality; let us apply to the works of art where a new style is not attempted an appropriate criticism. Let us demand of them fullness, harmony, at least correctness —the virtues of eternity.
But let us reserve our readers’ love for the true poets, that is, for the men who bring a new style, who are a style. Because these men enrich the world, increase reality. Matter, it was said before, neither grows nor wanes; now the physicists say that it degrades, that it diminishes. It continues to be true that it does not increase. This means that things are always the same, that from their material no enlargement can come to us. But here is the poet making things enter a vortex and as it were a spontaneous dance. Subjected to this virtual dynamism things acquire a new sense, become other new things.
Matter, always old and invariable, swept up by vortices of always new trajectory, is the theme of the history of art. The dynamic vortices that put novelty in the world, that ideally increase the universe, are the styles.
Arrived at the point, to me so unforeseen and strange, of writing some pages at the front of a most beautiful sheaf of poems, I did not know how to resolve myself.
The characteristic value of this book consists, as I have said, in announcing a truly new poet, a style, a muse. On the other hand, the style, the muse in these pages only begins its germination. I believe it would be indelicate to approach it too soon to define it. I believe it preferable to dedicate the following pages to fixing a little what in general a style, a muse, may be. From them will transcend to the reader an emotion of respect toward these first words of a poet who aspires to the utmost that can be aspired to in art: to be himself.
Nevertheless, let the reader be warned that to the pages of absolute poetry of El pasajero these of mine form like an atrium of absolute prose. They speak of aesthetics —which is quite the contrary of art, which is or pretends to be science.
I
RUSKIN, THE HABITUAL AND BEAUTY
Reading verses is not one of my habitual occupations. In general, I do not conceive that it can be anyone’s. Both to read and to create a poem we should demand a certain solemnity. Not a solemnity of external pomps, but rather that air of intimate stupor that invades our heart in the essential moments. Contemporary pedagogy has been influencing in a deplorable way the order of aesthetic culture by making of art a customary, normal, and fixed-hour thing. In this way, we lose the feeling of distances; we lose respect and fear of art; we approach it at any instant, in the dress and temper in which it catches us, and we accustom ourselves to not understanding it. The real emotion to which we refer today when we speak of aesthetic enjoyment is —if we want sincerely to recognize it— a pale delight, exempt from vigor and density, that the mere contact with the beautiful work produces in us.
One of the most baneful men for Beauty has been, perhaps, Ruskin, who has given art an English interpretation. The English interpretation of things consists in their reduction to domestic and habitual objects. The Englishman aspires, above all, to live well, comfortably; what for the Frenchman is sensuality and for the German philosophy, is for the Englishman comfort. Now then: comfort, ease, demands of things very numerous conditions, distinct according to the vital function in each case of giving comfort: only one condition is generic, ineludible, and like an a priori of all that is comfortable: that it be customary. Not in vain is England the country that has resolved the problem of advancing without breaking with its ancient usages. The unusual, by the mere fact of being so, is uncomfortable.
Ruskin managed to give an interpretation of art that takes from it only that which is susceptible of becoming a customary exercise. His gospel is art as use and comfort. Such an intention, naturally, can only lead to intelligence those arts that are not so in rigor: the industrial or decorative arts. Ruskin obstinately tries to introduce Beauty into the severe, tame English home: for that he must first domesticate it, enervate it, bleed it. And so, made a ghost, made an adjective, he leads it to the honorable dwellings of the British citizens.
I do not say that decoration or artistic industry is exempt from beauty: I say only that its beauty is not only beauty —it is utility varnished with beauty, touched with beauty: it is water with some bacchic drop. And it happens that contemporary man has accustomed himself to ask no deeper emotions of beauty than those born of the industrial arts, and if he were sincere he would confess that aesthetic enjoyment is not a pleasure different from that produced by things a little tidied and put in good order.
It would be prudent to free Beauty from that decorative sheath in which one wants to keep it, and that the steely soul return to give under the sun its dangerous refulgences. This good twentieth century, which carries us in its strong arms, of tense muscles, seems destined to break with some hypocrisies, insisting on the differences that separate things. We feel that from the root of our spirit ascends a will of noon, enemy of the crepuscular visions where all cats are gray. Science is not going to be for us a common sense aided by metric apparatus, nor Morality a passive honorability in our social acting —nor Beauty cleanliness, simplicity, or composure. All those things —common sense, civil honorability, cleanliness— are very well; we have nothing against them; he who despised them would be repugnant to us. But Science, Morality, Beauty, are other things that in nothing resemble them.
It is not reading poems that is one of my habitual occupations.
I need to drink the water in a clean glass, but do not give me a beautiful glass. I judge, in the first place, very difficult that a drinking glass can, in all rigor, be beautiful; but if it were, I could not carry it to my lips. It would seem to me that on drinking its water I drank the blood of a fellow being —not of a fellow being, but of an identical one. Either I attend to quenching my thirst or I attend to Beauty; a middle term would be the falsification of one and the other thing. When I am thirsty, please, give me a glass full, clean, and without beauty.
There are people who have never felt thirst, what is called thirst, true thirst. And there is one who has never suffered the essential experience of Beauty. Only thus is it explained that one can drink from beautiful glasses.
II
THE «I» AS THE EXECUTIVE
Use, utilize, we can only things. And vice versa: things are the points where our utilitarian activity is inserted. Now then: before everything we can place ourselves in a utilitarian attitude, except before one thing, except before a single thing, before an only thing: I.
Kant reduces morality to his well-known formula: act in such a way that you do not employ other men only as means, that they be as ends of your own acts. To make, as Kant does, of these words the expression of a norm and the scheme of every duty is equivalent to declaring that in fact each one of us uses his fellow men, treats them as things. Kant’s imperative, in its various dicta, aspires that other men be for us persons, not utilities, things. And this dignity of person comes upon something when we fulfill the immortal maxim of the Gospel: treat thy neighbor as thyself. To make of something an I itself is the only means for it to cease to be a thing.
But so it appears, it is given to us to choose before another man, before another subject, between treating him as a thing, utilizing him, or treating him as «I». There is here a margin for the arbitrary, a margin that would not be possible if the other human individuals were really «I». The «thou», the «he», are, then, fictitiously «I». In Kantian terms we would say that my good will makes of thee and of him as other I’s.
But before we spoke of the I as of the only thing that, not only do we not want, but cannot convert into a thing. This has to be taken literally.
I

L’«IO» COME L’ESECUTIVO
To see it clearly it is fitting to realize first the modification that in the meaning of a verb introduces its employment in the first person of the present indicative with respect to its meaning in second or third person: I walk, for example. The sense of walking in «I walk» and «he walks» has evidently a first aspect of identity —otherwise we would not employ the same idiomatic root. Note that «signification» means nothing but «reference to an object»; therefore, «identical signification» will be «reference to one and the same object or reality, to one and the same aspect of an object or reality». Well then: if we fix with some insistence our attention on what the reality may be to which «I walk» alludes, we will notice how great is its difference from the one alluded to by «he walks». The walking of «he» is a reality that I perceive with the eyes, taking place in space: a series of successive positions of some legs upon the earth. In «I walk» perhaps there comes to me the visual image of my feet moving; but over and above that, and as more directly alluded to in those words, I find an invisible reality foreign to space —the effort, the impulse, the muscular sensations of tension and resistance. The difference cannot be greater. One would say that in «I walk» I refer to walking seen from within what it is, and in «he walks», to walking seen in its exterior result. Nevertheless, the unity of walking as an intimate happening and walking as an external event, while being palmary, immediate, and presenting itself to us without demanding any work, does not imply the least resemblance between its two faces. What has to do, in what can resemble the peculiar intimate thing «effort», «sensation of resistance» with a body that varies its situation in space? There is, then, an «I-walking» completely distinct from the «walking of others».
Any other example we take will reproduce the same observation. Nevertheless, in cases like that of «walking» it seems that it is the exterior that is its primary and clearest signification. Let us not enter now into inquiring why this is so. Let it suffice to note that, on the contrary, a whole class of verbs is characterized by its primary and evident signification being the one they have in the first person. I desire, I hate, I feel pain. The pain or the hatred of others, who has felt them? We see only a contracted physiognomy, eyes that pierce askance. What is there in these visual objects in common with what I find in myself when I find in me pain or hatred?
With this is clear, to my thinking, the distance between «I» and every other thing, be it an inanimate body or a «thou», a «he». How should we express in a general way that difference between the image or concept of pain and pain as felt, as hurting? Perhaps by making note that they mutually exclude each other: the image of a pain does not hurt, more, it distances the pain, replaces it with its ideal shadow. And vice versa: pain hurting is the contrary of its image: at the moment it becomes image of itself it ceases to hurt.
I means, then, not this man as distinguished from the other, nor much less man as distinguished from things, but everything —men, things, situations—, in so far as verifying itself, being, executing itself. Each one of us is I, according to this, not by belonging to a privileged zoological species, which has an apparatus of projections called consciousness, but more simply because it is something. This box of red leather that I have before me is not I because it is only an image of mine, and being an image is equivalent precisely to not being the imagined. Image, concept, etcetera, are always image, concept of… and that of which they are image constitutes the true being. The same difference that there is between a pain one speaks to me of and a pain that I feel there is between the red seen by me and the being red of this leather of the box. For it being red is as for me my hurting. As there is an I So-and-So, there is an I-red, an I-water, and an I-star.
Everything, looked at from within itself, is I.
Now we see why we cannot place ourselves in a utilitarian posture before the «I»: simply because we cannot place ourselves before it, because the state of perfect compenetration with something is indissoluble, because it is everything in so far as intimacy.
III
«I» & MY I
Everything, looked at from within itself, is I.
This phrase can only serve as a bridge to the strict comprehension of what we seek. In rigor it is inexact.
When I feel a pain, when I love or hate, I do not see my pain nor do I see myself loving or hating. For me to see my pain it is necessary that I interrupt my situation of sufferer and become a seeing I. This I that sees the other suffering I, is now the true I, the executive, the present. The suffering I, speaking with precision, was, and now is only an image, a thing or object that I have before me.
In this way we arrive at the last rung of the analysis: «I» is not man in opposition to things, «I» is not this subject in opposition to the subject «thou» or «he», «I», finally, is not that «myself», me ipsum, that I believe I know when I practice the Delphic apophthegm: «Know thyself». This that I see rise over the horizon and waver upon the elongated clouds of dawn like a golden amphora, is not the sun, but an image of the sun; in the same way the «I» that seems to me so immediate to myself, is only the image of my «I».
This is not the adequate place to make war upon the original sin of the modern age which, like all original sins, to tell the truth, was a necessary condition of not a few virtues and triumphs. I refer to subjectivism, the mental illness of the Age that begins with the Renaissance and consists in the supposition that what is closest to me is I —that is, what is closest to me in respect of knowledge, is my reality or I in so far as reality. Fichte, who was before anything and above all an excessive man, the excessive elevated to the category of genius, marks the maximum degree of this subjective fever, and under its influence there elapsed an age in which, at a certain hour of the morning, within the Germanic lecture halls the world was pulled out of the I as one pulls one’s handkerchief out of one’s pocket. After Fichte initiated the descent of subjectivism, and perhaps at these very moments, there announces itself, like the vague profile of a coast, the new way of thinking exempt from that preoccupation.
That I, whom my fellow citizens call So-and-So, and who am I myself, has for me, in the end, the same secrets as for them. And, vice versa: of other men and of things I have no less direct news than of myself. As the moon shows me only its pale stellar shoulder, my «I» is a muffled passer-by, who passes before my knowledge, letting it see only his back wrapped in the cloth of a cloak.
From the saying to the doing there is a great stretch —exclaims the vulgar. And Nietzsche: «It is very easy to think things; but it is very difficult to be them». That distance that goes from saying to doing, from thinking something to being that something, is the very same exactly that lies between thing and I.
IV
THE AESTHETIC OBJECT
So that we arrive at the following rigid dilemma: we cannot make an object of our comprehension, nothing can exist for us unless it becomes image, concept, idea —that is, unless it ceases to be what it is, to transform itself into a shadow or scheme of itself. Only with one thing have we an intimate relation: this thing is our individual, our life, but this our intimacy on becoming image ceases to be intimacy. When I said that in «I walk» we referred to a walking that was seen from its interior, I alluded to a relative interiority; with respect to the image of a body moving in space, it is the image of the movement of my sensations and feelings as an interiority. But the true intimacy that is something in so far as executing itself, is at an equal distance from the image of the external as from that of the internal.
Intimacy cannot be our object nor that of science, nor in practical thinking, nor in imaginative representing. And, nevertheless, it is the true being of each thing, the only sufficient one, and the one whose contemplation would satisfy us with plenitude.
In rigore è inesatta.
He ahí una sugestiva metáfora.
Let us leave off pursuing the question of whether it is rationally possible and of how it will be possible to make an object of our contemplation what seems condemned to never being an object. This would carry us too deep into metaphysical lands. Let us place ourselves with some attention before a work of art —the Pensieroso, for example, divinely quiet under the frigid light of the Medici chapel. And let us ask ourselves what it is that, in the last instance, serves as term, object, and theme of our contemplation.
It is not the block of marble, as an image of reality: it is evident to us that, were we able to retain it in all its details as a memory, its material existence would seem indifferent. The consciousness of the reality of that marmoreal body does not intervene in our aesthetic fruition —or intervenes, better said, only as a means for us to come to the intuition of a purely imaginary object that we could transport integrally into our fantasy.
But neither is the fantastic object the aesthetic object. A fantastic object does not have to be distinct from a real object: the difference between the two is reduced to one and the same thing being represented to us as existent or as non-existent. But the Pensieroso is a new object of incomparable quality with which we feel ourselves in relation thanks to that object of fantasy. It begins, precisely, where every image ends. It is not the whiteness of this marble, nor these lines and forms, but that to which all this alludes, and which we suddenly find before us with a presence of such plenary sort that we could only describe it with these words: absolute presence.
What difference is there between the visual image we sometimes have of a man thinking before us and the thinking of the Pensieroso? That visual image works like a narration upon us, it tells us that there, at our side, someone thinks: there is always a distance between what is given to us in the image and that to which the image refers. But, in the Pensieroso, we have the very act of thinking executing itself. We witness what in another mode can never be present to us.
Trivial and erroneous is the description that a contemporary aesthetician gives of this most peculiar manner of knowledge, of knowing an object, that art offers us. According to Lipps, I project my I into the piece of polished marble, and that intimacy of the Pensieroso would be like the disguise of myself. This is evidently false: I am perfectly aware that the Pensieroso is he and not I, is his I and not mine.
Lipps’s error is the child of that subjectivist itch to which I have referred before as if that literally incomparable transparency of the aesthetic object could have for me, outside art, my I. Not in introspection, not observing myself, do I find the intimacy of thinking as in this marmoreal volume. Nothing more false than to suppose in art an underground of inner life, a method for communicating to others what flows in our spiritual underground. For this there is language; but language alludes, merely, to intimacy, it does not offer it.
Let the three terms be noted that intervene in every linguistic expression. When I say «it hurts me» it is necessary to distinguish: 1st, the pain itself that I feel; 2nd, my image of that pain, which does not hurt me; 3rd, the word «it hurts me». What is it that transports to the neighboring soul this sound «it hurts me», what is it that it means? Not pain hurting, but the anodyne image of pain.
Narration makes of everything a phantom of itself, distances it, transposes it beyond the horizon of actuality. The narrated is a «was». And the was is the schematic form that what is absent leaves in the present, the being of what no longer is —the shirt that the serpent abandons.
Well then, let us think what would mean a language or a system of expressive signs whose function did not consist in narrating things to us, but in presenting them to us as executing themselves.
Such a language is art: this is what art does. The aesthetic object is an intimacy in so far as such —it is everything in so far as I.
I do not say —careful!— that the work of art discovers to us the secret of life and of being: I do say that the work of art pleases us with that peculiar enjoyment we call aesthetic, because it seems to us that it makes patent to us the intimacy of things, their executive reality —in the face of which the other notices of science seem mere schemes, remote allusions, shadows and symbols.
V
THE METAPHOR
Our gaze, on directing itself to a thing, stumbles on the latter’s surface and rebounds returning to our pupil. This impossibility of penetrating objects gives every cognitive act —vision, image, concept— the peculiar character of duality, of separation between the known thing and the subject that knows. Only in transparent objects, a crystal, for example, does this law seem not to be fulfilled: my sight penetrates the crystal; that is, I pass, under the species of visual act, through the crystalline body and there is a moment of compenetration with it. In the transparent, the thing and I are one. Nevertheless, does this happen in rigor? For the transparency of the crystal to be true it is necessary that I direct my sight through it, in the direction of other objects where the gaze rebounds: a crystal that we looked at upon a background of void would not exist for us. The essence of the crystal consists in serving as transit to other objects: its being is precisely not to be itself, but to be the other things. Strange mission of humility, of negation of themselves, ascribed to certain beings! The woman who is, according to Cervantes, «a transparent crystal of beauty» seems also condemned to «be the other than herself», in the corporeal as in the spiritual, seems destined the woman to be an aromatized transit of other beings, to let herself be penetrated by the lover, by the son.
But to what I was going: if instead of looking at other things through the glass I make this the term of my mission, then it ceases to be transparent and I find before me an opaque body.
This example of the crystal can help us to understand intellectually what instinctively, with perfect and simple evidence, is given to us in art, namely: an object that unites the double condition of being transparent and of that which shows through in it being not another distinct thing but itself.
Now then, this object that is transparent to itself, the aesthetic object, finds its elementary form in the metaphor. I would say that aesthetic object and metaphorical object are one and the same thing, or rather, that the metaphor is the elementary aesthetic object, the beautiful cell.
An unjustified inattention on the part of scientific men maintains the metaphor still in the situation of terra incognita. But I am not going to pretend in these fugitive pages the construction of a theory of the metaphor, and I must limit myself to indicating how in it the genuine aesthetic object is revealed in an evident way.
Before everything it is fitting to note that the term «metaphor» means at once a procedure and a result, a form of mental activity and the object achieved by means of it.
A poet of Levante, Señor López Picó, says that the cypress
There is a suggestive metaphor. What is in it the metaphorical object? It is not the cypress nor the flame nor the specter; all this belongs to the orb of real images. The new object that comes out to meet us is a «cypress-specter of a flame». Now then, such a cypress is not a cypress, nor such a specter, a specter, nor such a flame, a flame. If we want to retain what can of the cypress remain once made flame and of this made cypress, it is reduced to the real note of identity that exists between the linear scheme of the cypress and the linear scheme of the flame. This is the real resemblance between the one and the other thing. In every metaphor there is a real resemblance between its elements and for this it has been believed that the metaphor consisted essentially in an assimilation, perhaps in an assimilatory approximation of very distant things.
This is an error. In the first place, that greater or lesser distance between things cannot mean anything but a greater or lesser resemblance between them; very distant, therefore, is equivalent to very little resembling. And, nevertheless, the metaphor satisfies us precisely because in it we ascertain a coincidence between two things deeper and more decisive than any resemblances.
But moreover, if on reading López Picó’s verse we fix attention, insist premeditatedly on what both things have of real similarity —the linear scheme of the cypress and of the flame— we will note that all the charm of the metaphor vanishes leaving us before a mute, insignificant geometric observation. It is not, then, the real assimilation that is metaphorical.
Qual è in essa l’oggetto metaforico?
Tornemos a nuestro ejemplo.

In effect, the positive resemblance is the first articulation of the metaphorical apparatus, but only this. We need real likeness, a certain approximation capable of being reasoned between two elements, but with an end contrary to the one we suppose.
Let it be noted that the resemblances on which metaphors lean are always inessential from the real point of view. In our example the identity of the linear scheme between a cypress and a flame is of such a manner extrinsic, insignificant for each of many elements that we do not hesitate to consider it as a pretext.
The mechanism, then, is perhaps the following: it is a question of forming a new object that we will call the «beautiful cypress» in opposition to the real cypress. To achieve it it is necessary to subject the latter to two operations: the first consists in freeing ourselves from the cypress as a visual and physical reality, in annihilating the real cypress; the second consists in endowing it with that new most delicate quality that lends it the character of beauty.
To obtain the first we seek another thing with which the cypress possesses a real resemblance at some point, for both without importance. Leaning on this inessential identity we affirm its absolute identity. This is absurd, it is impossible. United by a coincidence, in something insignificant, the remains of both images resist compenetration, repelling each other mutually. So that the real resemblance serves in rigor to accentuate the real dissimilarity between both things. Where the real identification is verified there is no metaphor. In the latter lives the clear consciousness of non-identity.
Max Müller has made note that in the Vedas the metaphor has not yet found for expressing its radical equivocation the word «as». Instead, the metaphorical operation presents itself to us in the open, skinned, and we witness this moment of negation of identity. The Vedic poet does not say «firm as a rock», but sa, parvato na acyutas —ille firmus, non rupes. As if he said: firmness is, for the moment, only an attribute of rocks —but he is also firm—, therefore, with a new firmness that is not that of rocks, but of another kind. In the same way the poet offers to God his hymn non suavem cibum, which is sweet, but is not a viand. The bank advances bellowing, «but it is not a bull»[34].
Traditional logic spoke of the modus tollendo ponens in which the negation of one thing is at the same time affirmation of a new one. Thus, here the cypress-flame is not a real cypress, but is a new object that keeps from the physical tree as the mental mold —mold into which comes to be injected a new substance completely foreign to the cypress, the spectral matter of a dead flame[35]. And, vice versa, the flame abandons its strict real limits —which make of it a flame and nothing more than a flame— to fluidify itself in a pure ideal mold, in a sort of imaginative tendency.
The result of this first operation is, then, the annihilation of things in what they are as real images. On colliding one with another their rigid shells break and the internal matter, in a fusing state, acquires a softness of plasma, fit to receive a new form and structure. The thing cypress and the thing flame begin to flow and become ideal tendency cypress and ideal tendency flame. Outside the metaphor, in extrapoetic thinking, each of these things is term, point of arrival for our consciousness, they are its objects. For this reason, going toward one of them excludes going toward the other. But on the metaphor making the declaration of their radical identity, with equal force as that of their radical non-identity, it induces us not to seek the former in what both things are as real images, as objective terms; therefore, to make of these a mere point of departure, a material, a sign beyond which we must find identity in a new object, the cypress to which, without absurdity, we can treat as a flame.
Second operation: once we have noted that identity is not in the real images, the metaphor stubbornly insists on proposing it to us. And it pushes us to another world where evidently it is possible.
A simple observation makes us find the way toward that new world, where cypresses are flames.
Every image has, so to speak, two faces. By one of them it is image of this or that thing; by the other it is, in so far as image, something of mine. I see the cypress, I have the image, I imagine the cypress. So that, with respect to the cypress, it is only image; but with respect to me it is a real state of mine, it is a moment of my I, of my being. Naturally, while my vital act of seeing the cypress is executing itself, this is the object that exists for me; what I may be in that instant constitutes for me an unknown secret. On one side, then, the word cypress is name of a thing; on the other it is a verb —my seeing the cypress. If this my being or activity is to become, in turn, an object of my perception, it will be necessary that I place myself, so to speak, with my back to the thing cypress, and from it, in the inverse sense to the previous, look toward within myself, and see the cypress de-realizing itself, transforming itself into my activity, into I. Said in another form, it will be necessary that I find the way for the word «cypress», expressive of a noun, to enter into eruption, put itself in activity, acquire a verbal value.
That which every image is as my executive state, as actuation of my I, we call feeling. It is an error overcome in recent psychology that of limiting this name to the states of pleasure and displeasure, of joy and sadness. Every objective image, on entering our consciousness or departing from it, produces a subjective reaction —as the bird on alighting on a branch or abandoning it makes it tremble, as on opening or closing the electric current a new instantaneous current is roused. More: that subjective reaction is nothing but the very act of perception, be it vision, memory, intellection, etcetera. For this precisely we do not realize it; we would have to disregard the present object to attend to our act of vision and, therefore, this act would have to conclude. We return to what we said above: our intimacy cannot be directly an object for us.
Let us return to our example. We are invited first to think of a cypress; then the cypress is taken away from before us and we are proposed that in the same ideal place that it occupied we place the specter of a flame. In another way: we have to see the image of a cypress through the image of a flame, we see it as a flame, and vice versa. But one and the other exclude each other, if they are mutually opaque. And, nevertheless, it is a fact that on reading this verse we fall into the awareness of the possible perfect compenetration between both —that is, that the one, without ceasing to be what it is, can find itself in the very place where the other is; we have, then, a case of transparency that is verified in the sentimental place of both[36]. The feeling-cypress and the feeling-flame are identical. Why? Ah!, we do not know why: it is the always irrational fact of art, it is the absolute empiricism of poetry. Each metaphor is the discovery of a law of the universe. And, even after a metaphor is created, we continue ignoring its why. We feel simply an identity, we live executively the being cypress-flame.
With this we cut here the analysis of our example. We have found an object constituted by three elements or dimensions: the thing cypress, the thing flame —which now become mere properties of a third person—, the sentimental place or the I form of both. The two images endow the new marvelous body with objective character; its sentimental value lends it the character of depth, of intimacy. Taking care to accentuate both words equally we could call the new object sentimental cypress.
This is the new thing conquered —for some, symbol of the supreme reality. Thus Carducci:
E già che la metafora, regina
Di nascita e conquista,
È la sola gentil, salda, divina
Verità che sussista…

THE STYLE OR THE MUSE
One last consideration it matters to me to add here. The almost universal doctrine of aesthetics tends to define art —in one terms or another— as an expression of human interiority, of the feelings of the subject. I am not going to discuss in these pages this opinion as general as authoritative, but merely to underline the point of discrepancy between it and what is expounded in the previous pages.

Art is not only an activity of expression, such that the expressed, albeit inexpressed, existed previously as reality. In the succinct analysis of the metaphorical mechanism that I have just made, feelings are not the end of the poetic labor. It is false, factitiously false, that a real feeling is expressed in a work of art. In our example, the aesthetic object is literally an object, the one we called the sentimental cypress. In such a manner that in art feeling is also a sign, an expressive means, not the thing expressed, but material for a new corporeality sui generis. “Don Quixote” is neither a feeling of mine, nor a real person or image of a real person: it is a new object that lives in the sphere of the aesthetic world, a world distinct from the physical world and from the psychological world.
What happens is that the expressive function of language is limited to expressing with certain images (the sonorous or visual ones of words) other images —things, persons, situations, feelings—, and art, on the contrary, uses executive feelings as means of expression and, by virtue of this, gives to what is expressed the character of being executed. We would say that, if language speaks to us of things, merely alludes to them, art effects them. There is no objection to preserving for art the title of expressive function, provided two distinct powers in expressing are admitted, the allusive and the executive.
Let us draw another consequence of importance, albeit in passing from all that precedes: art is essentially UNREALIZATION. Within the aesthetic sphere there may be occasion to classify the diverse tendencies as idealist and realist, but always on the inescapable assumption that it is the essence of art to create a new objectivity born of the prior breaking and annihilation of real objects. Consequently, art is doubly unreal; first, because it is not real, because it is something else distinct from the real; second, because that distinct and new thing which is the aesthetic object carries within itself, as one of its elements, the pulverization of reality. As a second plane is only possible behind a first plane, the territory of beauty begins only at the confines of the real world.
In the analysis of the metaphor we saw in what manner everything ends in making of our feelings means of expression, precisely in what they have of inexpressible. The mechanism for achieving this consisted in disturbing our natural vision of things, so that, under cover of that disturbance, what ordinarily passes unperceived gains decisive influence: the sentimental value of things.
They are, then, the overcoming or breaking of their real structure, and their new structure or sentimental interpretation, two faces of one same process.
The peculiar manner in which each poet derealizes things is style. And since, seen from the other face, derealization is not achieved except by a subordination of the part of the image that looks to the object to the part it has of the subjective, of the sentimental, of the little portion of an I —it is understood that it could be said: style is the man.
But let it not be forgotten that that subjectivity exists only insofar as it occupies itself with things, that it appears only in the deformations introduced into reality. More clearly: style proceeds from the individuality of the “I”, but it is verified in things.
The I of each poet is a new dictionary, a new language through which objects reach us, like the cypress-flame, of which we had no news. In the real world we can have things before the words in which they are alluded to us; we can see or touch them before knowing their names. In the aesthetic orb it is style that is at once word and hand and pupil: only in it and through it do we come to know certain new creatures. What one style says, another cannot say. And there are styles of very rich lexicon that can draw countless secrets from the mysterious quarry. And there are styles that possess only three or four words, but through them there reaches us a corner of beauty that, otherwise, would remain unborn. Every true poet, whether copious or scant, is, for that reason, irreplaceable. A scientist is surpassed by another who follows him: a poet is always literally unsurpassable.
On the other hand, the incongruity of all imitation in art is patent. To what end? In science precisely what can be repeated has value: but style is always only-begotten.
I feel, because of this, a religious emotion when, in reading recent poetic works —which I undertake only in hours of exquisite, fervent superfluity— I seem to surprise beyond the virtues of plenitude, harmony, and correctness, the initial wailing of a style that germinates, the vague first smile of a new infant muse. It is the promise that the world is going to be increased for us.

THE PASSENGER OR A NEW MUSE
And this is for me the whole little book of Moreno Villa. There is in it a poem entitled “In the fervent forest”, which the reader must read with utmost recollection. There is therein a pure poetry. There is in it nothing but poetry. It is free of that minimum of reality that symbolism preserved in wanting to give the impression of things. Not even the impression of them is preserved (as happens in the descriptive compositions that precede the poem).
Among all physical qualities there is one where unreality already points: it is the aroma. To perceive it we seek as it were a self-absorption: we feel that it is necessary to isolate ourselves from the surroundings, which hold us and embed us in the utilitarian order of realities. For this we close our eyes and take a few deep breaths, in order to remain for a moment alone with the aroma. Something similar is demanded by the understanding of the quoted poem, composed of the flesh of odours.
From the druidic depth of that forest a new muse smiles at us, a muse that aspires to grow, and one day, we hope, will reach the fullness of itself.
In our torrid desert a rose is going to open.
