These are the thoughts on the novel that an allusion of Baroja’s has incited me to formulate. I repeat that I do not intend with them to instruct those who know more of these things than I. It is possible that all I have said is pure error. It matters nothing if it has served as an incitement for some young writers, seriously concerned with their art, to take heart and explore the difficult and subterranean possibilities that still remain to the old destiny of the novel.
But I doubt they will find the trace of such secret and deep veins if, before setting themselves to write their novel, they do not feel, for a long while, dread. From him who has not perceived the gravity of the hour that today cuts this genre aslant, nothing can be expected.
