Ni el espacio ni mi intención de mero y fiel abreviador me permiten hoy hacer comentario personal ninguno. Yo no he sugerido —salvo el punto de carácter científico que se refiere a la idea de soberanía— mis opiniones privadas. No he dicho que me parezca acertada la táctica de las bases, ni he empleado una sola palabra para rebatir las opiniones del señor Maura.
Me he tomado el trabajo de escribir estas notas iliterarias con el exclusivo propósito de poder afirmar, previa demostración, que sólo quien no sepa oír ni leer ni entender, puede sustentar que el señor Maura ha facilitado la solución del problema catalán, ni mucho menos que ha tomado una actitud concreta, positiva y en algún modo especificada ante la petición de Cataluña.

Neither the space nor my intention as a mere and faithful abbreviator allow me today to make any personal comment. I have not suggested —except the point of a scientific character that refers to the idea of sovereignty— my private opinions. I have not said that the tactics of the bases seems to me correct, nor have I used a single word to refute the opinions of Mr. Maura.
I have taken the trouble of writing these unliterary notes with the exclusive purpose of being able to affirm, after demonstration, that only he who does not know how to hear or read or understand can maintain that Mr. Maura has facilitated the solution of the Catalan problem, much less that he has taken a concrete, positive attitude, in some way specified, before the petition of Catalonia.

Né lo spazio né la mia intenzione di mero e fedele abbreviatore mi permettono oggi di fare alcun commento personale. Io non ho suggerito —salvo il punto di carattere scientifico che si riferisce all’idea di sovranità— le mie opinioni private. Non ho detto che mi sembri azzeccata la tattica delle basi, né ho impiegato una sola parola per confutare le opinioni del signor Maura.
Mi sono preso il lavoro di scrivere queste note illetterate con l’esclusivo proposito di poter affermare, previa dimostrazione, che solo chi non sappia ascoltare né leggere né capire, può sostenere che il signor Maura ha facilitato la soluzione del problema catalano, né tanto meno che ha preso un atteggiamento concreto, positivo e in qualche modo specificato dinanzi alla richiesta della Catalogna.
