Ortega y Gasset
Abstract

Desde hace varios meses, con periodicidad astronómica, aparece en los periódicos un telegrama, siempre el mismo, donde se hace saber que un cierto señor Pemán ha dado una conferencia titulada «La claudicación de los intelectuales y necesidad de la formación de una nueva intelectualidad». Yo no me permito discutir la tesis general que este señor Pemán, a lo que parece, sustenta. Pero en esos telegramas de vitola estereotipada no falta nunca un párrafo que dice así:
«Aludió a hechos vituperables recientes, y con textos de Ortega y Gasset y Unamuno confirmó su tesis de la deserción y desviación de la intelectualidad española de sus deberes políticos y sociales. Afirmó que algunos intelectuales han pactado con las masas por el deseo morboso de halagarlas, en vez de ponerse al frente de ellas, o enfrente de ellas, para orientarlas y dirigirlas».
Yo creía no haber escrito ni dicho palabra alguna que fomentase las pasiones de la muchedumbre y pudiera utilizarse para nutrir en tal sentido la perpetua conferencia de este señor Pemán, conferencia que, por supuesto, no es sino un halago concienzudo a los más viejos instintos de las más típicas masas. Pero es posible que mi memoria flaquee o bien que en estado sonambúlico haya cometido algún desliz. Siempre estoy dispuesto a reconocer mis errores cuando me son comprobados. Por ello fuera oportuno que este señor Pemán publicase esos textos criminosos a fin de que yo supiera a qué atenerme con respecto a mí mismo. Esto tengo que decir ahora. Luego, cuando se hayan publicado, es probable que convenga decir algunas cosas más a este pululante señor Pemán.

For several months, with astronomical periodicity, there appears in the newspapers a telegram, always the same one, where it is made known that a certain Mr. Pemán has given a lecture entitled “The claudication of the intellectuals and the necessity of the formation of a new intelligentsia”. I do not allow myself to discuss the general thesis that this Mr. Pemán, as it seems, maintains. But in those telegrams of stereotyped format there never lacks a paragraph that says thus:
“He alluded to recent vituperable facts, and with texts of Ortega y Gasset and Unamuno confirmed his thesis of the desertion and deviation of the Spanish intelligentsia from its political and social duties. He affirmed that some intellectuals have made a pact with the masses out of the morbid desire to flatter them, instead of placing themselves at their head, or in front of them, to orient them and direct them”.
I believed I had not written nor said any word that fomented the passions of the crowd and could be used to nourish in that sense the perpetual lecture of this Mr. Pemán, a lecture which, of course, is nothing but a conscientious flattery of the oldest instincts of the most typical masses. But it is possible that my memory wavers or that in a somnambulic state I have committed some slip. I am always disposed to recognize my errors when they are proven to me. That is why it would be opportune that this Mr. Pemán publish those criminal texts so that I might know what to hold to with respect to myself. This I have to say now. Later, when they have been published, it is probable that it will be fitting to say some more things to this swarming Mr. Pemán.

Da vari mesi, con periodicità astronomica, appare nei giornali un telegramma, sempre lo stesso, dove si fa sapere che un certo signor Pemán ha tenuto una conferenza intitolata «La claudicazione degli intellettuali e necessità della formazione di una nuova intellettualità». Io non mi permetto di discutere la tesi generale che questo signor Pemán, a quanto pare, sostiene. Ma in quei telegrammi di stampo stereotipato non manca mai un paragrafo che dice così:
«Alluse a fatti vituperevoli recenti, e con testi di Ortega y Gasset e Unamuno confermò la sua tesi della diserzione e deviazione dell’intellettualità spagnola dai suoi doveri politici e sociali. Affermò che alcuni intellettuali hanno patteggiato con le masse per il desiderio morboso di lusingarle, invece di mettersi alla loro testa, o di fronte a esse, per orientarle e dirigerle».
Io credevo di non aver scritto né detto parola alcuna che fomentasse le passioni della moltitudine e potesse utilizzarsi per nutrire in tal senso la perpetua conferenza di questo signor Pemán, conferenza che, naturalmente, non è se non una coscienziosa lusinga ai più vecchi istinti delle più tipiche masse. Ma è possibile che la mia memoria vacilli o che in stato sonnambolico abbia commesso qualche sbaglio. Sono sempre disposto a riconoscere i miei errori quando mi sono comprovati. Perciò sarebbe opportuno che questo signor Pemán pubblicasse quei testi criminosi affinché io sapessi a che attenermi rispetto a me stesso. Questo devo dire ora. Poi, quando si saranno pubblicati, è probabile che convenga dire alcune cose di più a questo pullulante signor Pemán.
