The attempt to write a sheet on the frame fails, as was to be foreseen. We have to conclude when we were beginning to begin. Now we were to speak of the hat and the mantilla as frames of the feminine face. We shall have to renounce it. Then it would be fitting to raise the suggestive theme of why the picture in China and Japan usually has no frame. But how to touch this matter which implies the radical differentiation between the art of the Far East and the Western one, between the Asian heart and the European one? To understand it, it would be necessary first to suggest why the Chinese orients himself toward the South and not toward the North, as we do; why in mourning he dresses in white and not in black; why he begins to build his houses from the roof and not from the foundation; in short, why when he wants to say no he moves his head from top to bottom, as we do when we want to say yes.
