Abstract
An essay in the sociology of art, taking up Guyau: the shortest road to defining the style of the new music, painting, poetry and theatre runs through a sociological fact — their unpopularity. It distinguishes what is not yet popular (romanticism, which won the people at once) from what is unpopular by essence: the new art automatically splits the public into two antagonistic castes, a small favourable minority and a hostile majority.

Among the many brilliant ideas, though poorly developed, of the brilliant Frenchman Guyau, must be counted his attempt to study art from the sociological point of view. At first one would think that such a subject is sterile. To take art from the side of its social effects closely resembles taking the radish by the leaves or studying man by his shadow. The social effects of art are, at first sight, something so extrinsic, so remote from the aesthetic essence, that it is not well seen how, starting from them, one can penetrate into the intimacy of styles. Guyau, certainly, did not extract from his brilliant attempt the best juice. The brevity of his life, and that tragic haste of his toward death, prevented him from calming his inspirations and, leaving aside all that is obvious and callow, insisting on what is most substantial and recondite. It may be said that of his book Art from the Sociological Point of View only the title exists; the rest is yet to be written.
The fecundity of a sociology of art was revealed to me unexpectedly when, some years ago, I happened one day to write something about the new musical epoch, which begins with Debussy[93]. I proposed to define with the greatest possible clarity the difference of style between the new music and the traditional. The problem was rigorously aesthetic, and, nevertheless, I found that the shortest road to it started from a sociological phenomenon: the unpopularity of the new music.
Today I should like to speak more generally and to refer to all the arts that still have in Europe some vigor; therefore, along with the new music, the new painting, the new poetry, the new theater. Truly surprising and mysterious is the compact solidarity with itself that every historical epoch maintains in all its manifestations. An identical inspiration, a same biological style pulsates in the most diverse arts. Without realizing it, the young musician aspires to realize with sounds exactly the same aesthetic values as the painter, the poet and the dramatist, his contemporaries. And this identity of artistic meaning had to yield, by force, an identical sociological consequence. Indeed, to the unpopularity of the new music there corresponds an unpopularity of like cast in the other muses. All young art is unpopular, and not by chance and accident, but by virtue of an essential destiny.
It will be said that every newly arrived style suffers a stage of quarantine and one will recall the battle of Hernani and the other combats that occurred at the advent of romanticism. However, the unpopularity of the new art is of a very different physiognomy. It is fitting to distinguish between what is not popular and what is unpopular. The style that innovates takes some time to conquer popularity; it is not popular, but neither is it unpopular. The example of the romantic irruption usually adduced was, as a sociological phenomenon, perfectly inverse to that which art now offers. Romanticism very soon conquered the «people», for whom the old classical art had never been a heartfelt thing. The enemy with whom romanticism had to fight was precisely a select minority that had remained ossified in the archaic forms of the poetic «ancien régime». Romantic works are the first —since the invention of printing— that have enjoyed great printings. Romanticism has been par excellence the popular style. First-born of democracy, it was treated with the greatest indulgence by the mass.
On the other hand, the new art has the mass against it, and always will have. It is unpopular by essence: more than that, it is anti-popular. Any work whatsoever engendered by it produces in the public automatically a curious sociological effect. It divides it into two portions: one, minimal, formed by a small number of persons who are favorable to it; another, majoritarian, innumerable, which is hostile to it. (Let us leave aside the equivocal fauna of the snobs.) The work of art acts, then, as a social power that creates two antagonistic groups, that separates and selects in the formless heap of the crowd two different castes of men.
What is the differentiating principle of these two castes? Every work of art arouses divergences: some like it, others not; some like it less, others more. This dissociation has no organic character, obeys no principle. The chance of our individual nature will place us among the ones or among the others. But in the case of the new art, the disjunction is produced on a deeper plane than that on which the varieties of individual taste move. It is not a question of the majority of the public not liking the young work and the minority liking it. What happens is that the majority, the mass, does not understand it. The old periwigs who attended the performance of Hernani understood very well the drama of Victor Hugo, and precisely because they understood it, they did not like it. Faithful to a determinate aesthetic sensibility, they felt repugnance for the new artistic values that the romantic proposed to them.
In my judgment, what characterizes the new art, «from the sociological point of view», is that it divides the public into these two classes of men: those who understand it and those who do not understand it. This implies that the ones possess an organ of comprehension denied, therefore, to the others; that they are two distinct varieties of the human species. The new art, evidently, is not for everyone, like the romantic, but goes from the outset directed to a specially endowed minority. Hence the irritation it arouses in the mass. When one does not like a work of art, but has understood it, one feels superior to it and there is no room for irritation. But when the displeasure that the work causes arises from its not having been understood, man is left as humiliated, with an obscure consciousness of his inferiority that needs to compensate itself by the indignant affirmation of himself before the work. Young art, by merely presenting itself, obliges the good bourgeois to feel himself just what he is: good bourgeois, a being incapable of artistic sacraments, blind and deaf to all pure beauty. Now, this cannot be done with impunity after a hundred years of all-embracing flattery of the mass and apotheosis of the «people». Accustomed to predominating in everything, the mass feels itself offended in its «rights of man» by the new art, which is an art of privilege, of nobility of nerves, of instinctive aristocracy. Wherever the young muses present themselves, the mass kicks them.
For a century and a half the «people», the mass, has pretended to be the whole of society. The music of Stravinsky or the drama of Pirandello have the sociological efficacy of obliging it to recognize itself for what it is, as «only people», a mere ingredient, among others, of the social structure, inert matter of the historical process, secondary factor of the spiritual cosmos. On the other hand, young art contributes also to the «better» ones coming to know and recognize one another in the gray of the crowd and to learn their mission, which consists in being few and having to combat against the many.
The time is approaching when society, from politics to art, will again organize itself, as is due, into two orders or ranks: that of the egregious men and that of the vulgar men. All the malaise of Europe will come to debouch and to be cured in that new and saving scission. The undifferentiated, chaotic, formless unity, without anatomical architecture, without a ruling discipline, in which one has lived for the space of a hundred and fifty years, cannot continue. Under all contemporary life there throbs a profound and irritating injustice; the false assumption of real equality among men. Every step we take among them shows us so evidently the contrary that every step is a painful stumble.
If the question is posed in politics, the passions aroused are such that perhaps it is not yet a good hour to make oneself understood. Fortunately, the solidarity of the historical spirit to which I alluded before permits us to underline with all clarity, serenely, in the germinal art of our epoch the same symptoms and announcements of moral reform that in politics present themselves obscured by the base passions.
The evangelist used to say: Nolite fieri sicut equus et mulus quibus non est intellectus. Be not like the horse and the mule, which lack understanding. The mass kicks and does not understand. Let us try to do the inverse. Let us extract from young art its essential principle, and then we shall see in what profound sense it is unpopular.
Proviamo noi a fare l’inverso.
