Pero Stefansson no hubiera podido hacer esto si previamente no hubiese aprendido de los esquimales a cazar focas y construir casas de hielo. El método de «vivir sobre el país» presupone la imitación del esquimal. Se trataba, pues, de aprovechar la experiencia instintiva pero milenaria del habitante primitivo y añadirle el suplemento de la razón y del coraje que sólo el hombre ario posee.
Para mí el buen éxito de este método es un ejemplo de lo que en todo caso y orden puede hacerse. En vez de suplantar lo instintivo e irracional con la razón, conviene completarlo con ésta. La razón no se basta nunca a sí misma. Es sólo corrección del instinto, perfeccionamiento de la espontaneidad.
Para mí es un símbolo Stefansson desnudo dentro de su casa de hielo, cuando fuera hace 50 grados bajo cero, y sudando.

But Stefansson could not have done this if he had not previously learned from the Eskimos to hunt seals and to build ice houses. The method of «living off the country» presupposes the imitation of the Eskimo. It was a question, then, of profiting by the instinctive but millenary experience of the primitive inhabitant and adding to it the supplement of reason and courage which only the Aryan man possesses.
For me the good success of this method is an example of what in every case and order can be done. Instead of supplanting the instinctive and irrational with reason, it is fitting to complete it with the latter. Reason never suffices to itself. It is only a correction of instinct, a perfecting of spontaneity.
For me Stefansson naked inside his ice house, while outside it is 50 degrees below zero, and sweating, is a symbol.

Ma Stefansson non avrebbe potuto fare questo se prima non avesse imparato dagli esquimesi a cacciare le foche e a costruire case di ghiaccio. Il metodo di «vivere sul paese» presuppone l’imitazione dell’esquimese. Si trattava, dunque, di approfittare dell’esperienza istintiva ma millenaria dell’abitante primitivo e aggiungervi il supplemento della ragione e del coraggio che solo l’uomo ariano possiede.
Per me il buon successo di questo metodo è un esempio di ciò che in ogni caso e ordine può farsi. Invece di soppiantare l’istintivo e l’irrazionale con la ragione, conviene completarlo con questa. La ragione non basta mai a se stessa. È soltanto correzione dell’istinto, perfezionamento della spontaneità.
Per me è un simbolo Stefansson nudo dentro la sua casa di ghiaccio, mentre fuori fa 50 gradi sotto zero, e sudando.
