Abstract
A lyrical piece on dusk at El Escorial: as colours flee, things shrink to silhouettes. From this Ortega reflects on reality as the power of bodies to claim space against one another, and on the third dimension as the mark of the real.

Each hour brings its light and each light —like a poet— creates anew all things in its own manner. Thanks to this, the world, which is already so rich in static forms, increases indefinitely its content. Thus the Monastery of El Escorial is not a single one: except for those of the middle of the night, tardy, useless inert hours, each hour subjects our great lyrical stone to a new interpretation, transfigures it, producing a multitude of successive monasteries that we can accumulate in our sensibility. They were in another time the dancing hours which, as the classic says, taken by the hand struck the earth with alternate foot. Now they have been converted to literature. Each cultivates a literary genre, and this first nocturnal hour inclines to comedy.
It is well known that the purpose essential to comedy consists in showing how all that is great and heroic is fallacious. Comedy is always, always parody, mockery of a tragedy, a tragedy that empties itself, that collapses. The comic muse pricks, like an insect, the volume of tragedy: the inner matter dissolves into the air, and before us there remains only a mask. Comedy fabricates disillusionments.
Well then: this first nocturnal hour converts things into silhouettes. How few resist victoriously such an interpretation, a malicious one!
There is a thing in all things that obliges us, in the last resort, to respect them: this thing is their reality. Whether we sympathize with it or not, when something is real it asserts itself against us and we cannot annihilate it. We avert from it perhaps our gaze, we orient toward other objects our heart: all is useless. That thing hated or disdained by us persists there, occupies a place in that same space where the things most grateful to us dwell, coexists with them in a dynamic dealing and contributes to their existence in such a way that if it disappeared, everything would come to destruction. This is the cause of its respectability. If by itself and before itself, isolated, a thing were real, one could suppress it by dint of disdain; but reality is nothing more than the symptom that a thing exercises influence upon all the others and receives it from them, that a thing is necessary for the rest to subsist. Because the toads hiss at twilight in their holes, the princesses spin in their boudoirs.
Reality is the power that things have of filling space, of asserting themselves one against another, and mutually imposing upon one another a determinate place. Real things are bodies, that is, something impenetrable, that responds violently to every aggression. It seems as though from the center of each one there were born a force that dilates itself in the sense of the three dimensions until it finds that which comes from the center of another thing and comes with it to a compromise. This compromise manifests itself in a delimitation of frontiers, in the line or profile of each object that indicates where one thing concludes and the other begins. It marks, therefore, the profile the extreme pretensions of a body; the respectable and efficacious force is precisely what is inside the profile, the cubic mass, the expansive matter.
This consideration leads us to fix upon the fact that only matter, the internal cubic mass, justifies the profile, as the intimate force of a nation makes its frontiers not become ridiculous lines. In sum, the third dimension is the characteristic of reality.
But to our eyes arrives the third dimension, the materiality of things represented by color. Each color symbolizes a matter, that is, a determinate power of expansion. Suppress the modulations of color and you will have extirpated from objects their third dimension and their matter; so to speak, you will have emptied them of reality. There will remain only the profile like an invalid gesture.
We go on thus thinking as we ascend from the Escorial of Below to the Escorial of Above. It is the instant in which the evening falls suddenly overcome under the nocturnal empire. The colors flee. Only the sky preserves a bluish brightness and hangs over the landscape like a vertical curtain. Against it the houses converted into silhouettes stand out. The Monastery, the enormous cubic mass, all stone, is now a dark surface, like a cut-out cardboard. We could roll it up as if it were a plane and carry it away under our arm. Its area is of the same color as the most modest houses around it. Nevertheless, it continues erect, and the towers, the dome, the crosses, the balls of the pinnacles accuse, more than ever, their profile with deplorable boastfulness. Above all the balls; the immense spheres of stone that this afternoon the sun polished, breaking into a halo its sheaves of gold, are now circles that make ridiculous equilibriums upon their condyles! Decidedly the Monastery transforms itself at nightfall into the Monastery of the Sad Countenance: lost the gravitating energy of the granite matter, it trembles against the sky like a scaffold of a suburban theater and unfolds its profile in vain gesticulations like tirades of redundant verses that an unlucky actor recited.
The laminating hour, the hour of silhouettes carries in its wings the muse of Aristophanes and triumphs over our great lyrical stone, putting it in ridicule. It does not matter: its triumph, every humorous triumph, is fugacious. Tomorrow, the rising dawn will return to the profile its potent matter, and tragedy will again unfold in luminous plenitude. It is the destiny of comedy to live only the moment in which the bats take flight and to feed on a phantasmagoria. When there is good light we see, if we have eyes, the reality of things, and then we respect them.
Quante poche resistono vittoriosamente a tale interpretazione, malevola!
I colori fuggono.
