Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A section of ‘The Dehumanization of Art’: an invitation not to bristle at young art. Against the assumption that a work must have a core of lived reality, Ortega argues that perceiving reality and perceiving artistic form are incompatible, and that to stylize is to deform the real, that is, to dehumanize.

In the work of art preferred by the last century there is always a nucleus of lived reality, which comes to be like the substance of the aesthetic body. On it art operates, and its operation is reduced to polishing that human nucleus, to giving it varnish, shine, composure, or reverberation. For the greater part of the people such a structure of the work of art is the most natural, is the only possible one. Art is a reflection of life, it is nature seen through a temperament, it is the representation of the human, etcetera, etcetera. But it is the case that with no less conviction the young maintain the contrary. Why must the old always have reason today against the young, seeing that tomorrow always gives reason to the young against the old? Above all, it is not fitting to be indignant nor to shout. Dove si grida non è vera scienza, Leonardo da Vinci used to say; Neque lugere neque indignari, sed intelligere, Spinoza recommended. Our most rooted, most indubitable convictions are the most suspect. They constitute our limits, our confines, our prison. Little is life if a formidable eagerness to widen its frontiers does not prance in it. One lives in the proportion in which one yearns to live more. Every obstinacy in keeping ourselves within our habitual horizon signifies weakness, decadence of the vital energies. The horizon is a biological line, a living organ of our being; while we enjoy fullness, the horizon emigrates, dilates, undulates elastically almost in the rhythm of our breathing. On the other hand, when the horizon becomes fixed it is that it has ankylosed and that we are entering old age.
It is not so evident as the academicians suppose that the work of art must consist, perforce, in a human nucleus that the muses comb and polish. This is, for the moment, to reduce art to the sole cosmetics. I have already indicated before that the perception of lived reality and the perception of artistic form are, in principle, incompatible because they require a different accommodation in our perceiving apparatus. An art that proposes to us that double gaze will be a squinting art. The nineteenth century has squinted excessively; that is why its artistic products, far from representing a normal type of art, are perhaps the maximum anomaly in the history of taste. All the great epochs of art have avoided that the work have in the human its center of gravity. And that imperative of exclusive realism that has governed the sensibility of the past century signifies precisely a monstrosity without example in aesthetic evolution. From which it results that the new inspiration, in appearance so extravagant, comes back to touch, at least in one point, the real road of art. Because this road is called ‘will to style’. Now: to stylize is to deform the real, to derealize. Stylization implies dehumanization. And vice versa, there is no other way of dehumanizing than to stylize. Realism, on the other hand, inviting the artist to follow docilely the form of things, invites him to have no style. That is why the enthusiast of Zurbarán, not knowing what to say, says that his paintings have ‘character’, just as Lucas or Sorolla, Dickens or Galdós have character and not style. On the other hand, the eighteenth century, which has so little character, possesses a style to saturation.
