Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A section of ‘The Dehumanization of Art’: the new style strips art of all pathos and is invariably comic, not in content but because art mocks itself; Ortega recalls Irony as the supreme aesthetic category proclaimed by the Schlegels’ Romantics.

Above it has been said that the new style, taken in its most ample generality, consists in eliminating the ingredients, and retaining only the purely artistic matter. This seems to imply a great enthusiasm for art. But upon going around the same fact and contemplating it from another slope we surprise in it an opposite aspect of satiety or disdain. The contradiction is patent and it matters much to underline it. In the last analysis, it would come to signify that the new art is a phenomenon of equivocal nature, a thing, in truth, nothing surprising, because equivocal are almost all the great facts of these running years. It would suffice to analyze a little the political events of Europe to find in them the same equivocal core.
Nevertheless, that contradiction between love and hatred of one and the same thing softens a little looking more closely at the artistic production of the day.
The first consequence that this withdrawal of art upon itself brings with it is to take from art all pathetism. In the art charged with “humanity” reverberated the grave character annexed to life. Art was a very serious thing, almost hieratic. At times it pretended nothing less than to save the human species —in Schopenhauer and in Wagner. Now; it cannot but astonish whoever stops to think of it that the new inspiration is always, indefectibly, comical. All of it sounds on that single string and tone. The comicness will be more or less violent and will run from frank clownery to the light ironic wink, but it never fails. And it is not that the content of the work be comical —this would be to fall back into a mode or category of the “human” style—, but that, whatever the content be, art itself becomes a joke. To seek, as before I have indicated, fiction as such fiction is a purpose that cannot be had except in a state of jovial soul. One goes to art precisely because one recognizes it as farce. This is what most disturbs the understanding of young works on the part of serious persons, of less current sensibility. They think that the painting and music of the new artists is pure “farce” —in the bad sense of the word— and do not admit the possibility that someone should see justly in farce the radical mission of art and its beneficent task. It would be “farce” —in the bad sense of the word— if the present artist pretended to compete with the “serious” art of the past and a cubist painting demanded the same type of pathetic, almost religious, admiration that a statue of Michelangelo. But the artist of now invites us to contemplate an art that is a joke, that is, essentially, the mockery of itself. Because in this lies the comicness of this inspiration. Instead of laughing at someone or something determinate —without a victim there is no comedy—, the new art ridicules art.
And let them not make, hearing this, too much fuss if they wish to remain discreet. Never does art better show its magical gift than in this mockery of itself. Because in making the gesture of annihilating itself it continues to be art, and by a marvelous dialectic, its negation is its conservation and triumph.
I doubt very much that a young man of today could be interested in a verse, a brushstroke, a sound that does not carry within itself an ironic reflection.
After all, this is not completely new as idea and theory. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a group of German romantics directed by the Schlegel brothers proclaimed Irony as the supreme aesthetic category and for reasons that coincide with the new intention of art. This latter is not justified if it limits itself to reproducing reality, duplicating it in vain. Its mission is to raise up an unreal horizon. To achieve this there is no other means than to deny our reality, placing ourselves by this act above it. To be an artist is not to take seriously the man so serious that we are when we are not artists.
Clear it is that this destiny of inevitable irony gives the new art a monotonous tint very apt to drive to despair the most patient man. But, at the same time, the contradiction between love and hatred that I have before signaled remains leveled. The rancor goes to art as seriousness; the love, to art victorious as farce, which triumphs over everything, even over itself, in the manner that in a system of mirrors reflecting themselves indefinitely one in the other no form is the last, all remain mocked and made pure image.
