Abstract

An editorial (El Sol, 1920) on Spain’s so-called ‘historic crisis’: the professionals of the old farce understand nothing of what is happening, nothing of the social question has been settled, and Barcelona poses the same problems as before. Topical politics; the title’s scare quotes are polemical.

Of the present political situation of Spain we know only one thing: that it is governed by muddle, and that each new day brings upon it confusion and shadows. The professionals of the old farce wander from pillar to post among tales and intrigues of the most comical gossip. They, who have a solid reputation as shrewd men, understand absolutely nothing of what is happening. Of what may happen tomorrow they have not even vague and remote ideas. They all make efforts to prevent anything interesting from happening; they fear that one day our public life will dawn altered and stirred by profound changes; faced with these possibilities, their impetus in the defense of the old ways and of obsolete systems acquires an unsuspected elasticity. But all their maneuvers are losing effectiveness. Now they notice that they have abused every trick and that suddenly the classic springs of the political machinery are beginning to fail in their hands. And here is the confusion, and the terror, and the not knowing where this dilapidated ship of our politics is going, nor how it will manage to weather the furious storms that the modern days have brought.

The handling of the crisis that has come to be called ‘historical’ is a characteristic continuation of the most ancient shames. The channel of Spain’s political life is overflowing with foolishness. The stupidity is so great that it fills everything.

There is an interest, a positive interest in lulling to sleep Spain’s liberal conscience. Let no bold voices sound, let no interesting transformations be thought of. Let the road of the new politics remain closed with a triple fence. No one feels curiosity to try other systems, other ideas, other men. Let ‘the known evil’ continue to prevail. Who thinks of ‘the good yet to be known’? ‘Literature, fantasy!’ —one hears them cry. To govern Spain in these days of tremendous universal unrest, the good man from Guernica who presides over the present Government suffices. And if some change were to be attempted, there they are, for the sure salvation of our destinies, all the chiefs of party, of group or of armed band, who have been governing Spain with such exact discernment that they have provoked nothing but misfortunes. The country seems for the moment asleep. Only among the working multitudes, where passion has gone to take refuge, the holy passion of public struggle, there arises at times, like a blaze, the unrest in which we live.

But, despite the apparent calm, the situation of our social problems is the same as before. Nothing has been resolved, absolutely nothing. Frivolous people may believe that working-class unrest has ceased, that the age of violent combat has passed. We can assure them that everything continues as before. Barcelona offers to Spanish life the same problems, the same anguish. The bow remains taut. Not a single step forward is taken in the reform of Spain’s social organization, no man of Government inclines his ear toward the great pulses of Europe; there is no concern for a better tomorrow, nor the desire for a happier dawn.

In the confusion of this moment open to the ‘historical crisis’, there pass by, making gestures of a graceful buffoonery, certain shady men whose trade consists in filling the whole of Spanish life with murkiness.
