Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

A page of social pedagogy: the school demanded by scientific pedagogy is the lay school, that is, the state school; the confessional school is a principle of anarchy because it disaggregates. Ortega pushes the thesis to denying private life and the family’s right to educate: society is the sole educator and the sole end of education.

The Greeks called the people laos; what is popular, laicos. The school that scientific pedagogy demands is the lay school.

Lay, ecclesiastical… Gentlemen, what did we say were the ruptures of human unity, the principles of disintegration among men? Religion is a religious community. Will it likewise be a social idea? Let us leave this question pending: the course history has taken obliges us to recognise great powers of socialisation in the religious idea; but, at the same time, how many times has it not disturbed the peace on earth?

What is certainly antisocial is the church, the particularist religion. Not in vain, according to Bourrienne, among the shelves Napoleon took to Egypt there was one with the sign «Politics», and on that shelf were found the Bible and the Koran. Politics for Napoleon did not certainly mean the art of making men better, but of conquering them by breaking them.

The confessional school as against the lay school is a principle of anarchy, because it is dissociative pedagogy.

It is clear that, for me, the lay school is the one instituted by the State. I should contradict all I have said if I admitted the freedom of teaching that today the conservative anarchists so belligerently take up as their banner as soon as the State tries to meddle in what is already private teaching.

For an ideally socialised State the private does not exist; everything is public, popular, lay. Morality itself becomes wholly public morality, political morality: private morality does not serve to found, sustain, enlarge and perpetuate cities; it is a sterile and scrupulous morality, maniacal and subjective. Private life itself has no good sense: man is altogether social, he does not belong to himself; private life, as distinct from public life, is usually a pretext for keeping a corner for fierce egoism, something like those hypocritical Indians’ Reservations of the United States, pens where the antisocial instincts of a decadent race are shut up.

It does not, then, fall to the family that presumed right to educate the children: society is the only educator, just as society is the sole end of education: thus in the concrete legislative applications the fundamental idea of social pedagogy is repeated: the correlation between individual and society.
