Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

Starting from a pamphlet by Rudolf Bultmann on synoptic gospel exegesis, Ortega deplores that Spain never discusses the history of Christianity, argues that Catholicism does not oppose scientific clarity about its own origins, and blames a specifically Iberian lack of curiosity, calling for a core of Catholics to free Catholicism from its Spanish blemishes.

The Investigation of the Synoptic Gospels is a very brief pamphlet —36 pages— by Rudolf Bultmann, in which the present state of evangelical exegesis is admirably summarized with unusual clarity. I know no work more fit for a first introduction to these great historical questions, upon which a whole century has poured its generous effort. It is clear that in so few pages there can only be found an appetizer for curiosity and an index of questions.

Why in Spain is there no talk of these so suggestive and moving themes? Scarcely has the question been written down when I notice its naivety. Anyone would say that in Spain many things are talked about! Unfortunately, the soul of Spain is still very provincial; the repertoire of subjects that circulate in it is reduced; the horizon, of short radius. We still chat, as in the villages, about the mayor, the mayor’s son, and the poems of his nephew. However, there are reasons to nourish hope with optimism. When one compares the repertoire of themes that today pass through the public mind with that which the Spain of 1900 frequented, the difference is gigantic. Perhaps there exists no country in Europe that in that period has similarly widened its landscape. We can say it with well-founded pride: that widening has been the work of our generation. Since this has not yet died, rather, it begins to govern national life, it is most verisimilar that the process of widening continues in multiplied growth and that soon in the mind of Spain —microcosm— the universe —macrocosm— be reflected whole.

But returning to the concrete point of the history of Christianity, it is not admissible that in our country it should be so completely neglected. It would be unjust to blame for this, as for so many other things, the Catholic Church. Catholicism is not opposed to scientific clarity being sought about the origin of its doctrine and organization. Precisely a very characteristic trait of the situation these studies have reached is the near parity existing today between a Catholic book on the history of Christianity and a book by an author without confession. There are, of course, extreme products, such as the works of Drews and his like, in which the historical existence of Jesus is denied, which are incompatible with Catholic dogma. But these products are not more compatible with rigorous science. On the other hand, it may be said that the most conservative note —as I shall later point out— has been given, not by a Catholic, nor by a Protestant, nor even by a professional exegete, but by a pure historian, of the highest rank, who has wished to place himself before the Christian texts, neither more nor less than as he had before placed himself before Thucydides or before the hieroglyphs of Egypt. Let it not be imputed, then, to Catholicism what is a defect of spontaneously Iberian curiosity. In this example we can see clearly that Spanish Catholicism is paying debts that are not its own, but of Spanish Catholicism.

I have never understood how there lacks in Spain a nucleus of enthusiastic Catholics resolved to liberate Catholicism from all the protuberances, sores, and encumbrances exclusively Spanish that have lodged in it and deform its clear profile. That nucleus of Catholics could give summit to a double and magnificent enterprise: the fecund purification of Catholicism and the perfection of Spain. For such as things stand today, they damage each other mutually: Catholicism goes laden with Spanish vices, and, vice versa, the Spanish vices shelter and fortify themselves often behind an insincere mask of Catholicism. As I do not believe that Spain can come out decisively onto the high seas of history unless the national Catholics aid the maneuver with enthusiasm and purity, I deplore greatly the absence of that energetic ferment in our official Church. And the case is that Catholicism signifies today, everywhere, a vanguard force, in which very clear minds, fully current and creative, do battle. Lord, why should the same not happen in our country? Why in Spain should it be admissible that many people use the title of Catholics as a patent that excuses them from refining their intellect and their sensibility and converts them into encumbrance and hindrance to every national perfection? (Thus there occurs the truly grotesque case of certain ladies —attributing to themselves a representation of the Church that is forbidden to their sex by Saint Paul— who intervene in the most complicated affairs, of which they understand not a single word). There comes to the lips, again and again, the old patriotic prayer of the very ancient poem on Fernán González:

It is a question of constructing Spain, of polishing it and magnificently equipping it for the immediate future. And it is necessary that the Catholics feel the pride of their Catholicism and know how to make of it what it was in other hours: an exquisite instrument, rich in all the present graces and skills, fit to put Spain “in form” before present-day life. Let them, then, cease being villagers and set themselves to work upon things, and not to say beforehand whether So-and-so is of the right or of the left (when they do not use a sad phrase taken from the prison idiom: “That one is of the other rope”).

Historical research has come to place us in immediate contact with the persons who lived around Jesus. It may be said that from the date after his death, the history of Christianity is as clear as, or clearer than, that of any other human fact very well known to us. We see the disciples of Christ gathering again in Jerusalem after a brief dispersal and bewilderment produced by his dramatic end. We attend the exalted life of this primitive Judeo-Christian community, which grouped itself around James, “the brother of the Lord,” and the apostolic Rock.

From this primigenial “Church” —it was already beginning to be called so— we clearly distinguish another type of Christianity, which germinates among the Gentiles, stirred up by the fire and passionate gesticulation of Saint Paul. Both Churches have a common root; but each has moreover secondary roots that are disparate. The Church of Jerusalem remains rooted in the Jewish tradition; the Church of the Gentiles nourishes itself from a Hellenistic atmosphere. The Gospels are the result of this double spiritual climate.

For the historian, Christian history does not begin with these, but with the “Acts of the Apostles” and the authentic Epistles. Here he can touch firm documentary ground, realities prior to the state of spirit that condenses in the Gospels. In these last years the coefficient of scientific confidence in the historical value of this part of the New Testament has grown notably. Eduard Meyer, the greatest historian Germany counts today, believed it incumbent very recently to rise up against the hypercriticism that had been treating the “Acts” and the Epistles with an unjustified rigor. Such that applying it to any other illustrious sources, to Thucydides, for example, would make impossible the attempt at the history of the Peloponnesian War. Meyer considers the “Acts” as the second part of a historical work, whose first portion is the Gospel of Saint Luke. He recognizes in him the companion of Saint Paul, which tradition postulated, and even accepts his title of physician. The professional exegetes angrily received Meyer’s conservative attitude, and although they have since softened, some incorruptibles remain. Bultmann must be one of these, because in his pamphlet he does not mention at all Meyer’s formidable book[21].

And the case is that in 1911 an archaeological discovery came to confirm a new detail, in appearance insignificant, of the work of Luke. At Delphi a stone with an inscription was found, in which the Emperor Claudius makes reference to his friend Junius Gallio as proconsul in Achaia. The date of the inscription —summer of 52— coincides exactly with the notice of the “Acts” (XVIII, 12-17) which presents Saint Paul accused by the Jews of Corinth before the proconsul Gallio. This confirmation that a stone comes to give of this notice affirms and illuminates historically great spaces of the early Christian texts.

We know, then, much about the persons and their movements. On the other hand, the question of what the ideas nested in these Christian minds of the first hour were has become more complicated than ever. Formerly it was believed possible to deduce from the Judaic tradition all the essence of Christian thought. But research on Paulinism forced the recognition of a decisive influence of the religious forms dominant in the Hellenistic syncretism. Christian history then inclined toward Greece. But behold, a new current of research discovers in the theological ideas of Iran and Babylon the true origin of doctrines that had been attributed to Hellenism. The most up-to-date state of the question is characterized by the suggestive combat between the partisans of the Hellenistic explanation (Bousset, Heitmüller) and the partisans of the Irano-Babylonian explanation (Reitzenstein, Meyer). These latter see in the Essenes, in Saint John the Baptist, etcetera, examples of the religious fermentation emanating from Persia and Babel.

This dissension does not prevent there existing great agreement on themes of the greatest importance, such as the order of precedence of the Gospels. Today the opinion is general that Saint Matthew and Saint Luke proceed from Saint Mark, although both use moreover another source lost to us, composed of “sayings” and sentences of Jesus. Collections of this kind there must have been many before the Gospels. Preaching compelled the forming of these anthologies of divine phrases, of narratives of miracles, of exemplary scenes skimmed from the life of the Lord.

The work that today occupies the historians of the Gospel clearly follows from this situation. With the other Synoptics traced back to the book of Saint Mark, and recognizing in it an overall redaction made upon the first collections of “sayings” and “deeds,” the question lies in separating the “redaction” from the “redacted.” In this manner one can come to reconstruct that series of strict words and actions of Jesus, completely free of the “form” that the evangelical writer —after all, a “writer”— has given them. The Gospels, like the Epistles and the books of “Apostolic Acts,” were in that fecund epoch literary genres, which, as such, had a “form,” a predetermined structure, within which the matter of the history of Jesus, of his life and doctrine, was molded. What is important for us, for the Christian as for the historian of Christianity, is this matter. If we study the laws that governed those “forms” of redaction, those literary “genres,” we can subtract them from the product and isolate in its purity the living, electric, moving matter of the “deeds” and “sayings” of Jesus.

This method, which has been called “form-historical, or of the forms,” is perhaps the distinctive trait of present-day philology as against those used by the previous generation. All literatures are being subjected to it, and the fertility of its results is evident.

But this method implies that the present generation believes in the reality of the “forms” and of the “genres.” On this matter I should have wished to write the present chapter. But I find myself at the end having only mentioned it in the title. What are we to do![22]
