Abstract
A section of ‘The Dehumanization of Art’: for the newest generation art is a thing without transcendence, and it interests the artist precisely insofar as it lacks gravity. Against a nineteenth century that expected art to save the species, the new style is to be set beside the triumph of sport and cinema: Europe is entering a phase of puerility.

All this comes to condense itself in the most acute, most grave, most profound symptom that young art presents, a most strange faction of the new aesthetic sensibility that claims alert meditation. It is something very delicate to say, among other motives, because it is very difficult to formulate with exactness.
For the man of the newest generation, art is a thing without transcendence. Once I have written this sentence I am frightened by it, upon noticing its innumerable irradiation of different meanings. Because it is not a question of any man of today finding art a thing without importance or less important than the man of yesterday did, but that the artist himself sees his art as an untranscendent labor. But even this does not express with rigor the true situation. Because the fact is not that the artist takes little interest in his work and craft, but that it interests him precisely because it has no grave importance and in the measure that it lacks it. The case is not well understood if it is not looked at in confrontation with what art was thirty years ago, and, in general, throughout the whole of the last century. Poetry or music were then activities of enormous caliber: little less than the salvation of the human species upon the ruin of religions and the inevitable relativism of science was expected of them. Art was transcendent in a double sense. It was so by its theme, which used to consist in the gravest problems of humanity, and it was so by itself, as a human power that lent justification and dignity to the species. One had to see the solemn gesture that before the mass the great poet and the genius musician assumed, gesture of a prophet or founder of a religion, majestic bearing of a statesman responsible for universal destinies.
Of an artist of today I suspect that he would be terrified to see himself anointed with so enormous a mission and obliged, in consequence, to treat in his work materials capable of such repercussions. Precisely it begins to taste to him of artistic fruit when he begins to notice that the air loses seriousness and things begin to skip lightly, free of all formality. That universal pirouetting is for him the authentic sign that the muses exist. If it may be said that art saves man, it is only because it saves him from the seriousness of life and raises in him an unexpected puerility. The magic flute of Pan, which makes the goats dance on the edge of the wood, becomes again the symbol of art.
All the new art turns out to be comprehensible and acquires a certain dose of grandeur when it is interpreted as an attempt to create puerility in an old world. Other styles obliged one to put them in connection with the dramatic social and political movements or else with the profound philosophical or religious currents. The new style, on the contrary, solicits, from the start, to be brought near the triumph of sports and games. They are two brother facts, of the same origin.
In a few years we have seen the tide of sport grow in the columns of the newspapers, causing almost all the caravels of seriousness to founder. The leading articles threaten to descend into their titular abyss, and upon the surface the regatta yawls sail by victorious. The cult of the body is eternally a symptom of puerile inspiration, because it is only beautiful and agile in youth, while the cult of the spirit indicates a will to grow old, because it only reaches plenitude when the body has entered into decadence. The triumph of sport means the victory of the values of youth over the values of old age. The same happens with the cinematograph, which is, par excellence, corporeal art.
Still in my generation the manners of old age enjoyed great prestige. The lad longed to stop being a lad as soon as possible and preferred to imitate the weary gait of the decrepit man. Today the boys and girls strive to prolong their childhood, and the young men to retain and underline their youth. There is no doubt: Europe enters a stage of puerility.
The event should not surprise. History moves according to great biological rhythms. Its greatest mutations cannot originate in secondary and detailed causes, but in very elementary factors, in primary forces of a cosmic character. It would be well that the greater and, as it were, polar differences existing in the living being —the sexes and the ages— did not also exercise a sovereign influence upon the profile of the times. And, in effect, it is easy to note that history swings rhythmically from one pole to the other, letting in some epochs the masculine qualities predominate and in others the feminine, or else exalting at times the juvenile disposition and at others that of maturity or old age.
The cast that in all orders the European existence is taking announces a time of manliness and youth. Woman and the old man have to yield during a period the government of life to the lads, and it is not strange that the world seems to be losing formality.
All the characters of the new art may be summed up in this one of its untranscendence, which, in turn, consists in nothing else but art’s having changed its place in the hierarchy of human preoccupations or interests. These may be represented as a series of concentric circles, whose radius measures the dynamic distance to the axis of our life, where our supreme strivings act. The things of every order —vital or cultural— revolve in those diverse orbits attracted more or less by the cordial center of the system. Well then; I should say that art, previously situated —like science or politics— very near the enthusiastic axis, support of our person, has shifted toward the periphery. It has not lost any of its exterior attributes, but it has become distant, secondary and less gravid.
The aspiration to pure art is not, as is wont to be believed, a pride, but, on the contrary, great modesty. Upon the art being emptied of human pathos it remains without any transcendence —as only art, with no further pretension.
