Abstract
An unsigned press note on Galdós’s death: official Spain was absent from the popular mourning, and the belated decree equating Galdós with Campoamor is cold and merely protocolary. Journalism, not philosophy.

Official Spain, cold, dry and protocolary, has been absent from the unanimous demonstration of grief provoked by the death of Galdós. The visit of the minister of Public Instruction does not suffice. The people, with its fine and sure perspicacity, has noticed that absence in the house of the glorious master, in the lists of condolences where the spiritual children of don Benito have already signed, the legitimate descendants of the Duchess Amaranta, of Gabrielillo Araceli, of Solita, of Misericordia and of Doctor Centeno. These men and these women of Spain could not be missing from the homage to the patriarch. It is others who have been missing. And, already at the last hour, one has wanted to remedy the oblivion with a lamentable decree, foam of official frivolity, painful example of how, in the spheres of Power, the springs of sensibility can blind themselves.
This decree, in which there is not a single moved word, will today highlight its dryness in the columns of the newspapers, where the grief of a whole people palpitates, where the tender and anguished phrases of the noble Galdosian Spain tremble. Perhaps it had to be dictated adhering to precepts of protocol. Protocol understands little of distances, and equates Galdós with Campoamor. There is no disdain for the tender poet in pointing out the deplorable contrast. The good don Ramón, comrade of don Benito, would have been the first to protest. Galdós was the genius. Campoamor the wit. Official Spain unites both in the hour of false homages.
It does not matter, however. The people knows that the highest and most singular of its princes has died on it. And although prince’s honor should be rendered to him, there will be for the deceased no pageantry, no corselets, no plumes, no gleaming sabers, no vibrating music nor martial parades. It is true that, perhaps, all of it would have been inopportune today! Lacking that, there will be in today’s act what is not usually in those others that are showy and solemn because the Government orders that they be so. There will be an intimate and sincere grief that will unite all the good Spaniards before the tomb of the unforgettable master. And this will be worth more than all the Decrees that may appear in the Gaceta.
