Abstract

Art criticism on the Zubiaurre brothers, Basque deaf-mute painters: silence, Ortega argues, dams up expressive force and makes it emerge as gesture, so that in their canvases figures, clothes and landscapes radiate intimacy. He contrasts their way (subject as centre of gravity) with French painting, where the sitter is a mere pretext for formal qualities.

The Zubiaurre brothers are Basques, deaf-mutes, and painters[92]. This means that there is in them a triple power of muteness. To be Basque is, without more, a native renunciation of verbal expression. The mysterious Basque people possesses an elemental language that barely serves to name material things, and is completely inept for expressing the fugitive flowing of inner life. On the other hand, is not painting a complacency in the muteness of things and a divine organization of taciturnity?

Because there is in everything the undaunted resolution to externalize its intimacy. Seen under a certain angle, the life of the world seems to consist in a formidable lyrical striving, in an indomitable will to express itself that lies in every being. If we stop up the sonorous channels —voice, murmur, groan— that things are wont to seek in order to set free their secret, the expressive force of Nature will remain pent up and, accumulating, will turbulently seek an outlet somewhere else. In this way, under the pressure of silence, mimicry is born and the gesture is discharged.

In the painting of the Zubiaurre, persons and landscapes, compressed by silence, present themselves resolved to make use of our gaze to reveal to us their intimate existence. There is noticed in these canvases an impulse from within outward, which makes the latent spirit ooze everywhere. Their characters are wont to remain motionless, because all the imaginable gesticulations would not suffice them to tell us what they want. Through their whole body —eyes, skin, silhouette—, all their clothing, the utensils, the paunchy and glossy jugs, the spotless tablecloths, the white façades of the farmhouses, the rhythmic curve of the fields, are a pure continued gesture. There is in these pictures an incessant irradiation of intimacies. In order to insinuate itself into us, nothing in them needs to move: it manages to express itself by emanation, as the flowers do in the silent forest. Sometimes, the endeavor to confess their arcanum is in these figures so great that their eyes open suppliant, anguished, poor eyes of shipwrecked persons that exhale the last and essential thought.

The cinematograph has shown how it suffices to suppress the voice of men and the noise of things for life, even the most vulgar, gliding tacit across the screen, to acquire an unexpected dramatic quality. Silence seems to sharpen everything and endow it with pathetic vibrations. Thus, from the work of the Zubiaurre, where nothing is passionate; rather, the most everyday existence is becalmed, there reaches us a permanent pathetic throb.

Although in these latter times the Zubiaurre are beginning to paint Castilian subjects, their most profound and characteristic labor has been the pictorial interpretation of the Basque race, in which they were born. They are of old and noble Bisayan stock and live a good part of the year in their solar house of Garay (Vizcaya), among hills that press together over brief damp valleys.

Contemporary painting, especially the French, eludes making the theme an integral part of the picture. The marvelous Degas, for example, has spent a whole patient and long life painting laundresses, dancers, and jockeys. However, it cannot be said that these beings were the theme of his work: they were only the pretext. Degas’s intention consisted rather in obtaining certain formal qualities of purely pictorial order. Any «subject» was good for motivating the refined eloquence of his brush.

On the contrary, in the work of the Zubiaurre the theme is the center of gravity toward which all the aesthetic values gravitate. They aspire to define plastically the millenary destinies of their people, and their canvases contain a lyrical inventory of Basque existence.

The Castilian and the Levantine, like the man of Florence or that of Naples, have enjoyed innumerable times the artistic salvation. The Basque, on the other hand, recluse in his planetary corner, surly and self-absorbed, lacks the external brilliance that painters are wont to favor. The air, in Vizcaya and in Guipúzcoa, does not have the Olympian transparencies of the Castilian high plain or of the Florentine vale. Men and women, with their triangular faces, of taut skin, and their garments of somber tones, can only attract him who seeks, far from the great commonplaces, select modulations of the human soul.

Basque Land, Versolari, by Valentín de Zubiaurre; The Victorious Rowers of Ondárroa, by Ramón, enclose concentrated all the life of this race, rural and maritime, which clings to its customs and its usages with unparagoned tenacity. At once mystical and sensual, the Basques refresh the prayer with the jug of cider and form processions that dissolve into dances of primitive choreography. There is no land in Spain more carefully tilled, nor cleaner villages, nor better urbanized towns. The Basque rapidly accepts the mechanical inventions of modern civilization; but, at the same time, he preserves irreducible in his breast the treasure of very ancient religious and political norms. I do not believe that there exists in Europe a people of more refined morality. Rectilinear of soul as of face, the Basque is one of the noblest variations that in the West the voluble plant of Adam has left.

The Zubiaurre fix subtly all these characters and underline them with a vague ironic resonance.

Because the technique of these two artists is governed by a humorous instinct, in the best sense of the adjective. I imagine that they dip the brush in the bittersweet juice of the apples ripened by autumn on the vaporous slopes of Vasconia. When love reaches the extreme of itself, it turns its head, and on seeing its frenzy, smiles at itself: this is humor. A kiss that no one comes to interrupt always dies of a smile germinated in the very lips that inter-kiss.

The Zubiaurre love the familiar beings they paint, and their simple and attractive technique consists in carrying them to the extreme.

Impressionism, born of an antipathy toward things, atomizes the forms into pure reflections: of a jug, of a face, of a building, it will paint only the amorphous chromatic mass. The primitive, enthusiast of the world that surrounds him, follows an opposite path: he will abstract from the reflections that deform the body of each object, and as if the pupil were a hand, he will glide it over the surface, admitting neither confusion nor vagueness in the outlines.

In the Zubiaurre this artistic intention of the Flemish and Italian primitives sprouts once more. Every thing matters much to them, and since the profile represents the demarcation of frontiers between one and the others, they have made themselves painters of profiles, of silhouettes. It may be said that the part of ourselves where we most energetically find ourselves is our profile. This comes to be the battle line that we constantly oppose to the rest of the world, always ready to annihilate us, to erase our singularity. If the artist insists on the contour of our body, it will remain gracefully marked, carried to the extreme, exacerbated. Hence comes the humorous zigzag that runs through the pictures of these brothers.

To the expressive power that such a tendency facilitates is due, in good part, the triumph obtained by the Zubiaurre, two years ago, at the Exhibition of Spanish Art in Paris. The Luxembourg acquired The Rowers of Ondárroa, a canvas by Ramón, where every line seems to sparkle with significations.

What they do with the forms they do with the colors. The white of a wall is only relatively white: in reality it is mixed with gray and red, with green and yellow. However, with just title we say that that wall is white. Whiteness predominates and qualifies the general color of the object; we would say that it is the profile of the color of that object. The Zubiaurre retain only these chromatic profiles and, exalting the tonalities, obtain that ceramic splendor of their canvases, which reflect the light triumphantly like enameled porcelains.
