Abstract

Los hombres que han gobernado estos dos años y que querían para ellos solos la República, no eran en verdad republicanos, no tenían fe en la República. Como no me refiero a nadie en particular, no tengo por qué hacer las excepciones que la justicia nominatim reclamaría. Eran incapaces de comprender que las trasformaciones verdaderamente profundas y sustantivas de la vida española, las que pueden hacer de este pueblo caído un gran pueblo ejemplar, son las que el Régimen republicano, como tal y sin más, produciría a la larga y automáticamente. Por eso necesitaban con perentoriedad otras cosas, además de la República, cosas livianas, espectaculares, superficiales y de una política ridículamente arcaica, como la expulsión de los jesuitas, la descrucifixión de las escuelas y demás cosas que por muchas razones y en muchos sentidos —conste, en muchos sentidos— han quedado ya bajo el nivel de lo propiamente político. Es decir, que no son siquiera cuestión. Otras, que son más auténticas, y que, quiérase o no, habrá que hacer, como la reforma agraria, tenían que haber sido acometidas bajo un signo inverso, sin desplantes revolucionarios, bajo el signo rigoroso de la más alta seriedad y competencia.
Se ha visto que esos hombres, al encontrarse con el país en sus manos, no tenían la menor idea sobre lo que había que hacer con ese país. No habían pensado ni siquiera en la Constitución que iban a hacer, la cual, al fin y al cabo, es lo más fácil, por ser lo más abstracto de la política.
The men who have governed these two years and who wanted the Republic for themselves alone were not in truth republicans; they had no faith in the Republic. As I refer to no one in particular, I need not make the exceptions that justice would demand nominatim. They were incapable of understanding that the truly deep and substantive transformations of Spanish life, those that can make of this fallen people a great exemplary people, are those that the republican Regime, as such and nothing more, would produce in the long run and automatically. That is why they needed, with peremptoriness, other things besides the Republic —light, spectacular, superficial things, of a ridiculously archaic politics, such as the expulsion of the Jesuits, the decrucifixion of the schools, and other things that for many reasons and in many senses —let it be noted, in many senses— have already fallen below the level of what is properly political. That is, they are not even a question. Others, which are more authentic and which, whether one likes it or not, will have to be done, like agrarian reform, should have been undertaken under an inverse sign, without revolutionary displays, under the rigorous sign of the highest seriousness and competence.
It has been seen that those men, finding the country in their hands, had not the least idea of what had to be done with that country. They had not even thought of the Constitution they were going to make, which, after all, is the easiest thing, being the most abstract part of politics.
Gli uomini che hanno governato questi due anni e che volevano per loro soli la Repubblica, non erano in verità repubblicani, non avevano fede nella Repubblica. Siccome non mi riferisco a nessuno in particolare, non ho perché fare le eccezioni che la giustizia nominatim pretenderebbe. Erano incapaci di comprendere che le trasformazioni veramente profonde e sostantive della vita spagnola, quelle che possono fare di questo popolo caduto un grande popolo esemplare, sono quelle che il Regime repubblicano, come tale e senza più, produrrebbe a lungo andare e automaticamente. Perciò avevano bisogno con perentorietà di altre cose, oltre la Repubblica, cose lievi, spettacolari, superficiali e di una politica ridicolmente arcaica, come l’espulsione dei gesuiti, la decrocifissione delle scuole e altre cose che per molte ragioni e in molti sensi —conste, in molti sensi— sono già rimaste sotto il livello di ciò che è propriamente politico. Cioè, che non sono nemmeno questione. Altre, che sono più autentiche e che, volenti o nolenti, si dovranno fare, come la riforma agraria, avrebbero dovuto essere affrontate sotto un segno inverso, senza sussulti rivoluzionari, sotto il segno rigoroso della più alta serietà e competenza.
Si è visto che quegli uomini, trovandosi il paese tra le mani, non avevano la minima idea su ciò che bisognava fare di quel paese. Non avevano pensato nemmeno alla Costituzione che stavano per fare, la quale, in fin dei conti, è la cosa più facile, perché è la più astratta della politica.
