Pero además de estas razones, que nos afectan sólo a nosotros, hay otras más graves y decisivas, que emergen de la condición de los tiempos. Padecen gravísimo error los que presumen que podemos hacer la democracia que nos venga en gana. Tenemos que hacer la democracia que hoy es posible, y sólo esa. Pues bien: mientras la antigua era linfática, barroca y lentísima, la actual tiene que ser magra, acerada y urgentísima. Por eso es preciso evitar toda pérdida de tiempo y de esfuerzo. Al que no es de este tiempo no le importa perderlo; pero nosotros estamos resueltos a que se haga una España infinitamente actual, que se sienta firme, con las garras sobre la línea matinal del horizonte. Por eso es preciso que no perdamos tiempo; que no se reproduzcan escenas lamentables en el Parlamento que recuerden los pretéritos. Nada de divagaciones ni de tratar frívolamente problemas, que sólo una labor de técnica difícil puede aclarar; sobre todo, nada de estultos e inútiles vocingleos, violencias en el lenguaje o en el ademán. Porque es de plena evidencia que hay, sobre todo, tres cosas que no podemos venir a hacer aquí: ni el payaso, ni el tenor, ni el jabalí. (Grandes y prolongados aplausos).
Éstas son, señores diputados, las razones en que fundamos nuestro programa de sobriedad.
But besides these reasons, which affect only ourselves, there are others more grave and decisive, which emerge from the condition of the times. Those suffer a most grave error who presume that we can make the democracy that takes our fancy. We have to make the democracy that is possible today, and only that one. Well then: while the old one was lymphatic, baroque and very slow, the current one must be lean, steely and most urgent. For that reason it is necessary to avoid all loss of time and effort. Whoever is not of this time does not mind losing it; but we are resolved that a Spain infinitely current be made, one that feels firm, with its claws upon the matutinal line of the horizon. For that reason it is necessary that we not lose time; that lamentable scenes be not reproduced in Parliament recalling past ones. Nothing of digressions, nor of treating frivolously problems that only a labor of difficult technique can clarify; above all, nothing of stupid and useless clamor, violences in language or in gesture. Because it is of full evidence that there are, above all, three things that we cannot come here to do: neither the clown, nor the tenor, nor the boar. (Great and prolonged applause).
These are, gentlemen deputies, the reasons on which we found our program of sobriety.
Ma oltre a queste ragioni, che riguardano soltanto noi, ce ne sono altre più gravi e decisive, che emergono dalla condizione dei tempi. Commettono gravissimo errore coloro che presumono di poter fare la democrazia che ci vada a genio. Dobbiamo fare la democrazia che oggi è possibile, e soltanto quella. Ebbene: mentre l’antica era linfatica, barocca e lentissima, l’attuale deve essere magra, temprata e urgentissima. Per questo è necessario evitare ogni perdita di tempo e di sforzo. A chi non è di questo tempo non importa perderlo; ma noi siamo risoluti a che si faccia una Spagna infinitamente attuale, che si senta salda, con gli artigli sulla linea mattutina dell’orizzonte. Per questo è necessario che non perdiamo tempo; che non si riproducano in Parlamento scene lamentevoli che ricordino le passate. Niente divagazioni né trattare frivolmente problemi che solo un lavoro di difficile tecnica può chiarire; soprattutto, niente stolti e inutili vociare, violenze nel linguaggio o nel gesto. Perché è di piena evidenza che ci sono, soprattutto, tre cose che non possiamo venire a fare qui: né il pagliaccio, né il tenore, né il cinghiale. (Grandi e prolungati applausi).
Queste sono, signori deputati, le ragioni su cui fondiamo il nostro programma di sobrietà.
