Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
The first ‘watchword’ Ortega offers the Republic: do not imitate. The Spanish republican movement must copy neither France in 1789 nor Russia in 1917, but stay faithful to its own circumstance — ‘a life that imitates is a life falsified’; originality is not sought, it is found. There follows the example of the new government’s flawless working, explained by the circumstance that the revolutionary committee had lived together in prison.

No me censuréis, amigos.
Ésta: no imitar.
A primera vista excluye toda captura metódica.

INTRODUCCIÓN A OTRA COSA
Magnanimidad —almas anchas—, no megalomanía.
What can I give the Republic? —of course, after giving it all that I have and all that I am. Little, very little, almost nothing: a few drams of doctrine. Do not censure me, friends. If I have nothing else, what would you have me give? Twenty-five years of meditating on Spain, well squeezed, can drip some estimable observations. I know that my compatriots listen to me, even those who beat me. I have achieved what the Greek philosopher asked of the tyrant who struck him: ‘Strike, but listen!’ For that very reason I must have care, measure, patience, responsibility. Let it not be demanded of me, then, that I now sketch urgent architectures. Quite the contrary. I accept the lesson of continence that the ministers have given us and, practicing it, I confirm them in the good judgment they are increasingly showing.
Let us speak first of things that are, or ‘seem to be’, lesser. Let my first countersign be the least resounding. This: do not imitate.
The Spanish republican movement must pledge itself to imitate none of those that have been.
With unshakable faith, I repeat for years: Spain will do it on its own. In which a double insinuation was enunciated: First, that Spain would do something. Second, that it would do something original, according to its autochthonous manner, extracting from its own and untamed substance the pattern for its behavior.
The foreigners —who understand nothing of the Iberian man— have been surprised to see how in our country changes of regime are made in a different way from the others. Let us be docile to this most original advent of the Republic.
Originality is what is not sought, but is found. At first sight it excludes all methodical capture. There is no recipe for being original; nevertheless, there is a very simple one: do not imitate, be faithful to the circumstance. If the Spanish Republic withdraws its gaze from what other peoples have done —the France of 1789, the Russia of 1917— and, instead of feigning a circumstance that is not that of here and now, holds to this one, shuts itself within our peninsular actuality, the Spanish Republic will be a glorious and most illustrious creation in universal History. Let no one doubt it.
We need, then, to live now, not on foreign images, but well immersed in our circumstance, pressing upon it to nourish ourselves with its juice. A life that is imitated is a life that is falsified.
I shall give an example of how the whole secret lies in exploiting the actual circumstance instead of feigning imaginary circumstances. It is a detail that by this hour ought already to have been noted.
If we take things from the instant when, oblique over the crowd, the new flag trembles from the balcony of the Gobernación, richer in colors than the one formerly used, and count up to the minute of writing these lines, one fact stands out, above all others, surprising: the perfection of functioning in the acts of Government. There has been no hesitation, no discussion, no friction in the movements of the ministerial body. In one hour one passed from there being no public Power —incorrectly the old regime threw it into the middle of the street— to its existing, not only with sufficient plenitude, but with its wheels running with the lubricated smoothness of a machine in tune, as if it had long been functioning. Because it was so thoroughly this, we have hardly noticed it and consider it as natural as the daily emergence of the sun.
And, nevertheless, it was the least natural thing in the world. The natural thing would have been for the mortal collapse of the monarchy to have obliged one to improvise slowly and with difficulty a Government, whose members, distant and disparate, would have taken a long time to fit together and function. If the contrary has happened, it is due to a small circumstance and to the fidelity with which it has been attended to; to the fact that the men of the revolutionary Committee have lived closely together for eight months; first, from the need to conspire; then, from the need to find themselves together in a prison. (Nota bene: almost everything interesting in the history of Spain has come out of prison —the Quixote and the Republic). They have had time to polish themselves against one another, to know their capacities and limitations, to articulate their divergences fruitfully, and when they began to govern, they were what I call ‘a group in form’.
The most fertile tranquility that Spain enjoys today, the plenitude of historical possession that the Republic has attained in a few magically brief hours, are due to having accepted that apparent chance, that circumstance. Instead of abandoning it, seeking to correct it with greater hypothetical perfections, the Spanish fate resolved to lodge itself within it without missing anything, accepting it entirely.
Let this fact serve us as a paradigm of originality, which is the art of accepting the circumstance.
Let us live our destiny; let us not imitate that of others.

INTRODUCTION TO SOMETHING ELSE
THINK BIG! — AN UNDISPUTABLE GLORY OF THE REPUBLIC. — A REQUEST TO THE PRESS
The magnificent and tremendous hour has arrived in which destiny imposes on Spaniards the obligation to think big.
It is the great season that sometimes takes centuries to return. Let enormous billboards be placed on the frontiers: ‘Here a people is going to be made.’ Is it not the greatest delight? To make, to build a nation for generations! To anticipate the future, by creating it! It is the shuddering morning the arsenal lives, when with anxious urgency the molds of the ships are being drawn and one senses in germinal condensation all the fair weathers and all the storms of their future voyages. The great work of architecture begins after a century of liquidation, collapse, and narrowing of life. The size of the future depends on the magnanimity of the purpose. Magnanimity —wide souls—, not megalomania. ‘During my life —said Floridablanca in his latter days— I have proposed to myself nothing else than to broaden the intellects of the Spaniards.’ Friends, let us take the resolution unanimously: think big!
But it must be declared in the least euphemistic manner that the very opposite is being done; people with souls no larger than those ‘used’ by beetles have managed in less than two months to shrink this young Republic for us and make it lose that elegance with which it was born. This cannot be tolerated for even a minute longer, and since it is intolerable, I, for my part, do not tolerate it, employing to that end the only force I have: that of making the blind bandurria player that I am sing; that is, denouncing it without euphemisms before the country.
A few groups, buzzing in the immediate surroundings of the Government, are intercepting its direct communication with the nation; they disturb it, hinder it, disorient and unsettle it. There are in the Ministry some men of the first order, whose only grave error has been to take seriously all that boastfulness that pretends to make of the Republic its private property and attributes to itself, as arbitrarily as audaciously, and as audaciously as ridiculously, the authentic representation of the people, of the national will, etcetera, etcetera. Archaic minds, incapable of deciphering the monumental lines of the future, only know how to fall back upon the commonplaces of the past, and insist that our nascent democracy be like those of a hundred years ago, and commit, without renouncing any, all the follies and all the blunders in which those broke their necks.
It is necessary that before them we defend the originality of our Republic, an originality that is insinuated and as it were hieroglyphic in the manner of its advent. Let this not be forgotten, because in it resides the secret of the future: when Spain was proposed to make a revolution, Spain said no; but when she was asked whether she wanted the legal establishment of a Republic, Spain, with astonishing coincidence, said almost entirely yes. This is the undeniable and fundamental fact, the frame within which the near history must move; whoever fails to keep himself within it, whoever fails to interpret its inexorable imperative is, historically, a dead man. The transformation of Spanish life is going to be so deep, substantive, and radical that those who speak at every hour of ‘revolution’, playing with the various senses of the word, belittle, reduce, and trivialize it. Because what they ask for under that name of ‘revolution’ are four spectacular things, without effective radicalism; that is, without roots, or plenitude, or possible endurance. A fine mess they are in if they believe that youth is going to take an interest in that mummy of a Carbonari Republic, hairy and gesticulating, that they want to make for us!
Let us, then, make a halt in the march and… let us set ourselves to think big.
The first condition for thinking big is to think with architecture, to see things with their perspective, placing each one in the altitude and rank that corresponds to it. This first condition has already been violated. Everything, the important and the trivial, goes confused, and heads suffer grave disorder. To correct it, the Press must make an energetic effort, putting order in its information, putting an end to stupid personal persecutions, and drawing each day in the minds of its readers clear hierarchical lines, that make the edifice of the new Spain loom into view.
A prima vista esclude ogni cattura metodica.

PENSARE IN GRANDE!
Amici, prendiamo l’accordo all’unanimità: pensare in grande!

After ten years of nullification, the Press returns, whether one wants it or not, to possessing a decisive intervention in public life. Nor can it fail to be so when it is a question of nothing less than building a State, and therefore of withdrawing the habitual notions encysted in heads and replacing them with the brand-new ones of the State that is to be made. Enormously increased, then, is the responsibility of the newspapers. I am sure they will know how to respond like good ones; but I must say that in these two months the Press —and especially that of Madrid— has not been up to the level of its formidable mission. The cause, as of so many other things now happening, is perhaps to be sought in those ten years of censorship that have demoralized it, preventing it from living upon itself and exercising its own responsibility. It was not easy, without hesitation, to pass at a stroke to a diametrically opposite situation in which there weighs on the Press a maximum of responsibility. Full of confidence I send this exhortation to my colleagues of the Press. Let them think that upon us depends, to an abnormal degree, what is going to happen in Spain. Let them eliminate, flatly, from their columns all frivolity, all levity, all inexact information and, above all, disorder. Let them show that they know how to contribute to the gigantic labor of building a brand-new State.
Here is an example of great caliber that clarifies the previous suggestion.
The Spanish Republic has, at this hour, in its favor an enormous, fabulous, improbable exploit, unique in the world, which should by itself have sufficed to compensate for whatever other minor errors may have been committed; this exploit is that of Azaña: the radical reduction of the Army. There is no other people in the world capable of doing such a thing, when all —let it be recorded— all dream of doing it. The way it has been done is, moreover, perfect in its general lines: without phrases, with generosity, without intentional vexation for anyone. I do not judge here the details, for which I lack competence; but no one, I believe, will be able honestly to ignore the seriousness and the rightness with which the whole of the work has been initiated. On the other hand, the soldiers whom the reform eliminates have given proof of exemplary formality by not presenting, until now, any obstacle to the execution of the extremely crude surgical work. They have understood that the Army had come to become completely denationalized, tolerating, among other things, its hypertrophy. If one day in Spain there was to be an Army well fused with the nation and rooted in it, a radical cut was inexcusable. Everything has been done, then, prodigiously. Now, a nascent regime that dares do that, instead of begging the most immediately effective supports, can look with just pride at the whole world. But, moreover, a regime that begins by decreeing so important an economy in the most delicate state organ offers the world a guarantee without equal, of those it will make in the other portions of the public body more docile to the scalpel. And this would suffice —and will suffice as soon as the stock-market spasms of these days pass— to give sufficient prestige to our currency and allow the technical manipulations that stabilize it.
I see in the content and in the manner of being made of this reform a paradigm of that new democracy which, whether they know it or not, the new generations bring preformed in their blood. That is the style of the only new politics that will conquer the future.
That is to say, the reform of the Army is today, in the universal political panorama, a fact of the first order. Well then; the newspapers have not devoted to it either more space or more heat than to any other of the decrees teeming in this season, or to this or that quarrel —generally ridiculous— against some petty figure who did his foolish thing or committed his small knavery in the last years. For this lack of perspective I take the liberty of accusing my colleagues of the profession —the journalists of Madrid—, for the very reason that I make myself one with them.
If anything deserves a national and spontaneous homage, it is the reform of the Army. And this homage must go to Azaña; but at the same time to the soldiers who abandon their career and to those who remain in it. That homage will appropriately set in relief the exemplary fact over the other lesser and innumerable ones. (As in Spain everything has an enormous coefficient of personalism —and it is not said that this is so absolutely a defect as is usually believed—, I am interested in making known the one that corresponds to this matter. It is many years since I have seen Mr. Azaña, and since always he has devoted to me his most select antipathy and his permanent hostility. Let it be on record. But this neither takes away nor adds so that I may recognize in him a man of great talent, endowed, moreover, with magnificent conditions for government).
Architecture, perspective, fix the attention on the matter or matters that are the most important in each stage!
And now the most important thing for the future of the Republic is the quality of the candidates who are going to be elected and to integrate the constituent Assembly.
Of this we shall speak after this introduction.

THE PROVINCES MUST REBEL AGAINST EVERY CANDIDACY OF UNDESIRABLES
