Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A review of Azorín’s Lecturas españolas. Ortega reproaches the author for his four years of conservative politics and reads the book’s perfection as the fruit of a repairing anguish, invoking the Greek aesthetic in which all aesthetic perfection is a perfecting of oneself, katharsis. There follows an analysis of Azorín’s art as a suspension of the movement of things, an artifice akin to that of painting. Literary criticism.

¿Viviremos? ¿No viviremos? ¿Qué somos? ¿Qué no somos?
One of the best books that I have read in Castilian is this one that Azorín publishes calling it Lecturas españolas. The volume presents itself with so elegant, so sober a bearing that before beginning to read it one feels oneself invited to recollection. As we go on reading we perceive that the author does not employ excessive expressions, coarse and weighty phrases to give evidence to his intention. This seems to me as pleasing as it is exemplary. In the present hour pens are moved by people better endowed with physical force than with inspiration. Everything is said with blows of the cudgel and cut from the ash trees of literature. Now then, things are difficult, things are fugitive and do not let themselves be treated with turbulence, nor with loud voices before the triumphant multitude, the one on top, the one of the rich or simply the proud, the one that occupies the high offices of national life, the one that believes it knows and does not know in politics, in science, in art.
It is probable that this book of Azorín’s will not be much read, because Azorín wishes to imprison with careful and light fingers of gesture, thoughts and emotions as if they were butterflies from which it is not good that they lose the iridescent dust lightly attached to their wings.
In this book Azorín resurrects from his parliamentary ashes and flows through all of it like a severe repentance. The poet has led four years of bad life. Not because he was a conservative in politics. Conservative is, for the present, a word. We are all conservatives the moment someone has the will to call us so. But political reality is essentially discontinuous; it is a succession of concrete questions before which we must take a position. In some of these, extremely grave, Azorín took an awkward posture, incompatible with certain superior norms. It is not the bad thing to be conservative, nor is it the good thing to be liberal: both are ordinarily nothing more than vocables, floating vocables without responsibility. As it has been said: on est toujours le réactionnaire de quelqu´un. But to say that two and two make five and to act accordingly, that is what cannot be done. And Azorín has done it and dedicated the divine art, which in hours of the highest cordial purity he had learned, to incite the inert passions of a multitude composed of the happy, the vain, the well-off against the unconscious shocks of the soul and the pain that wrings this valetudinarian race.
The perfection of Lecturas españolas — a characteristic note of the book — seems to have been born of a muffled anguish that his error left in the poet’s heart. It is the perfection of a noble spirit that raises itself up from a fault. The aesthetics of the Greeks derives the perfection of the beautiful work, equally in the creator and in the enjoyer, from a preceding purification of the spirits. All aesthetic perfection is a perfecting of oneself, Katharsis.
What beautiful and transparent pages! Jardines de Castilla, La música, El caballero del verde gabán, La familia, Primavera, Melancolía. Aroused behind the lines there rises a paralytic and sluggish world, towns that live in an ecstasy, immobilized countrysides, puddles of water that scarcely undulate, surrounded by stately elms with leaves that scarcely tremble. It is a quiet and identical life, like the one that on greenish stones the wise lizards lead, watching the magnitude of the sun with fine bead-like eyes that shine.
Azorín’s art consists in suspending the movement of things, causing the posture in which he surprises them to perpetuate itself indefinitely as in a perennial sentimental echo. In this way, the past does not pass totally. In this way, the corrupting power of time is undermined. It is a question, then, of an artifice analogous to that of painting. This art is rooted in an ironic operation to which real space is subjected. The panel, the canvas possess only two dimensions. To this superficial representation the bodies are subjected. And what happens with the third dimension, with depth? There it is, in the picture; but reabsorbed by the other two; it is and it is not. And all things within that ironic space begin a virtual existence, live without living in themselves and die because they do not die, enjoying an essential and symbolic vitality that the ingenious triumph of the artist over the third dimension has wrought for them. In an analogous manner Azorín reduces past and future to the sole dimension of the present and in it makes them cohabit: within the present lies the past in condensation and the future is found preformed.
But this is nothing more than Azorín’s aesthetic mechanism. Lecturas españolas are not exclusively a literary style. They constitute a book in the full and rare acceptation of the word. For what is a book? What a man does when he has a style and sees a problem. Without the one and without the other there is no book. Devoid of style, a book is a draft. Devoid of problem, printed paper. The problem is the cordial viscera of the book.
That is why only those live with a life of their own in whose interior there throbs a problem that truly is one. The volumes that are born without it do not live by themselves, but need to consume the life of a scholar in order not to perish completely ingurgitated by the jaws of the enormous oblivion, and they feed like vampires upon the virtuous man who sacrificed to them his memory. The heart is the problematic organ; its form is interrogative; systole and diastole, the opening and closing of an anxious interrogation. Shall we live? Shall we not live? What are we? What are we not? And this rhythmic anxiety that contracts and dilates our breast propagates itself in vibrating halos until it coincides with the horizon and obliges it to beat with it, and if night comes it sends like a compass to the remote stars, our little sisters, celestial entrails that consume themselves with trembling and incandescent disquiet. Sensibility for a problem centers us in the universe.
Azorín asks himself here with the words of Larra: «Where is Spain?» And Larra asked himself: «Where is Spain?» And so Costa asked himself, and before Cadalso and Mor de Fuentes, and before Saavedra Fajardo. And this question is like a successive heart passing through a row of eminent breasts; like a pain, always the same, that afforded those individuals, behind their particularities, a deep and serious identity. The author has attempted to reconstruct that unity of thoughts around a radical problem and to show us its evolution.
With this Azorín has initiated a historical essay of transcendence. It is not a question of a work with many footnotes nor with an imposing squadron of data. Nevertheless, it represents a juicy contribution to the new way of understanding the history of Spain.
It is well known that the scientific history of a people cannot be made by discharging upon an archive a load of good will. With these ingredients one obtains simply what is commonly called erudition, a thing as alien to science as, according to Dr. Luther, the art of singing was to the creed.
How is it possible to make the history of something without first knowing, in some manner, what that something is? When one makes the history of Rome, of whom does one make the history? Of the word Rome? Certainly not; of something more substantial. Of what, if we do not yet have its history? Some centuries have the philologists lived attempting the history of Rome, without succeeding in achieving it. Erudite works were composed upon it, but one never arrived at the historical science of Rome. Until one day Mommsen had a certain felicitous idea: to suppose that the history of Rome had to be substantially the history of the variations of Roman Law. Since then there is a history of Rome.
In like manner there wrote a few days ago the highest authority in Hellenic philology that there do not yet exist even glimpses of Greek history, and that they will not exist until this is undertaken supposing that the nerve of Hellenic vitality has been the movement of its philosophy.
Thus it happens with all things, whether material or spiritual: each one has a weak side, and only one, by which it can be apprehended intellectually and reduced to scientific domestication. To hit upon this secret is the true science, although the gestures and the form in which it is discovered may seem frivolous and light.
The history of Spain, according to all acknowledge and I have heard from its masters, has not yet arrived at that stage. Save in partial questions of law and of linguistics, the past of Spain is terra incognita, of unsuspected topography. Nevertheless, there has been accumulated, book upon book, a great library of national historiography. In general, the works that compose it find themselves totally remote from the scientific character. They suffer a notion of history exceedingly antiquated: they understand history as panegyric. Their authors have been carried to so arduous and well-deserving a labor by a heroic love of the fatherland. A sadder thing! They have not achieved their purpose. And it is that for constructing the history of Spain there is more convenient a modest and unpretentious love of Spain, and then a heroic love of the historical science. Would one have us told, in another case, what Mommsen had lost in Rome?
Well then, Azorín shares an opinion that today begins to be accepted by a group of young workers in national history. I know nothing of these matters, but I have heard them speak and they sustain the idea that the history of Spain has to be taken up starting from the Spanish defects, rather than from its virtues. What is more: they assure that what today is commonly considered as our ethnic virtues, are not really so, and that our true virtues have to be sought precisely there where the defects have sprouted. This affirmation should not be made with impassioned eyes. It has nothing to do with the greater or lesser affection for the fatherland. In it there is simply discussed an instrumental and technical question to make possible the edifice of our true history. But even on the plane of emotional considerations, I believe that that affirmation offers us hopes of improvement that that customary eulogistic history does not leave us. Because this measure principally of praises does not contribute to healing us, whereas the new criticism is, at once history and therapeutics. Such is, in my way of seeing it, the advantage of considering the history of Spain as the history of a disease.
Azorín concludes his book with this formula: «There is no more flattening and crushing calamity for a people than the lack of curiosity for the things of the spirit: all evils originate from it». A part of Lecturas españolas is dedicated to showing how this is not a capricious and subversive idea that has today occurred to a few; it has also its classics. The finest people of the past have thought it in their day. Now it is necessary that it transcend to the vulgar and that the reconstruction of our history be attempted looking at the Spanish phenomena through it.
Perhaps one day it will leap to the eyes of the blindest that the true patriots have been those who have asked themselves, like Larra: «Where is Spain?» Where is it? Because what is given to us as Spain serves us for nothing.
Chance places in this instant before my view a paragraph of an old professor of History of Spain at the Central University. It says thus:
«I wish to be Spanish and only Spanish; I wish to speak the idiom of Cervantes; I wish to recite the verses of Calderón; I wish to tinge my fancy with the tones that Murillo and Velázquez carry dissolved on their palettes; I wish to consider as my parchments of national nobility the history of Viriato and of the Cid; I wish to carry on the shield of my fatherland the ships of the Catalans that conquered the East and the ships that discovered the West; I wish to be of all this land, which still seems narrow to me, yes; of all this land stretched between the crags of the Pyrenees mountains and the waves of the Gaditanian sea; of all this land redeemed, rescued from the foreigner and his cupidities by the heroism and the martyrdom of our immortal forebears. And take it as understood from now and forever: I love with exaltation my fatherland, and before liberty, before the republic, before the federation, before democracy, I belong to my idolized Spain».
Thus spoke Castelar. Can that state of spirit be applauded? Is it usable for any labor of high culture? Do those words increase the density and purity of the Spanish blood? Are not a little grotesque those familial sentiments with which Castelar approaches Viriato? Is it not an inconvenience to prefer the fatherland to liberty?
On the other hand, Cadalso, according to Azorín, wrote: «Patriotism misunderstood, instead of being a virtue, comes to be a ridiculous defect». And also: «Although one love and esteem the fatherland, for judging it most worthy of all affection, let us hold for a very accidental thing to have been born in this part of the globe, or in its antipodes, or in any other whatsoever».
Fatherland, fatherland! Divine name, which everyone applies in his own way! In the morning, when we get up, we briefly run through the series of the most elevated occupations in which we are going to employ the day. Well then; for me this is fatherland: what in the morning we think we have to do in the afternoon.
