Abstract

A lecture: all individualism is mythology, hence individual pedagogy is sterile and one must educate the city to educate the individual, as in Plato, Pestalozzi and Natorp. If educating means transforming society, politics becomes social pedagogy and the Spanish problem a pedagogical one; the social is the combination of individual efforts toward a common work, not a community of feelings.

A grave consequence we deduce from what has been said up to here: that all individualism is mythology, is anti-scientific. Therefore, individual pedagogy too will be an error and a sterile project. How minimal is the influence of the master upon the disciple! He lives beside him a few hours, hours that the child considers heterogeneous to the integrity of his life, cold inorganic hours that he sees as holes of void cut out upon the suggestive tapestry of his spontaneous life.

The sense of modern thinking comes with slow preparations, gentlemen, to renew in this as in everything the attempts of Plato. That powerful man had the most profound gaze that has existed. We still do not know well how far he managed to see, for we have not yet exhausted the treasure of his visions. Plato’s pedagogy starts from the fact that one must educate the city in order to educate the individual. His pedagogy is social pedagogy.

The other genius of pedagogy, the Swiss Pestalozzi, who perhaps never read Plato, renews by necessary congeniality this idea. The school, according to him, is only a moment of education: the house and the public square are the true pedagogical establishments.

In these years that run, the illustrious Paul Natorp has published decisive studies on this matter. “The concept of social pedagogy —he writes in one of his books— means the capital recognition that education is socially conditioned in all its essential directions, while on the other hand a truly human organization of social life is conditioned by an education conformable to it of the individuals who compose it.”

If education is transformation of a reality in the sense of a certain better idea that we possess and education must be nothing but social, we shall have that pedagogy is the science of transforming societies. Before we called this politics: behold, then, that politics has become for us social pedagogy and the Spanish problem a pedagogical problem.

How, in effect, to improve Spain seriously if we do not have a somewhat exact idea of what a society ought to be?

We have seen that the social fact appeared to us when, seeking the reality of the individual, we found it only in complexion and linkage with other individuals, when, taking apart each man, we found that his interior was seasoned with materials common to other men. In effect, gentlemen, the social is the combination of individual efforts to realize a common work. Society is not originally the community of feelings, of tastes, of inclinations: if the obtaining of certain products that only communally can be obtained were not essential to man, society would not exist and the world would be inhabited by solitaries who, in passing one beside another, would not feel themselves, as the tree in the midst of the thickness of the forest finds itself isolated and without suspicion that its leaves interweave with those of another brother tree.

The communities of feeling are built in the air, in the water, in the sand. The sympathies among men are always fortuitous because they are transrational.

Bring it about that in a people a good number of neighbors come to love, for example, the new methods of cultivation; that they come to see in the scientific improvement of their fields a great work to realize: they will put hands and heart to the work; the individual divergences, if they do not disappear, will be purified; the factions and parties will reduce the sphere of action of their struggles; there will be one thing in which all will concur and submit to the coincidence to which the anonymous law obliges —the only sweet law— of necessary truth, of the truth of things. It will be a circle of active and fruitful peace like that truce of God that the medieval peoples took advantage of to enrich themselves, to cultivate themselves, to pile up lasting improvements.

Bring it about that in the directing classes, within twenty years, there be a good number of Spaniards personally active in the work of science: you will see how, disagreeing in a thousand things, they automatically coincide whenever it is a matter of going on resolving the great cultural problems.

Culture is labor, production of human things; it is making science, making morality, making art. When we speak of greater or lesser culture we mean greater or lesser capacity of producing human things, of work. Things, products are the measure, and the symptom, of culture. We Spaniards —this is our grave curse— have lost the cultural tradition; said more vulgarly, we have lost interest in things, in the work producing manufactures —human mentifatures. Now then, this supreme pedagogy of things, this supreme discipline of objects, we lack; only the individual appetites govern and direct us, the changing sentimental humors, the sympathies or antipathies of our nerves. And as among individuals the motives of divergence and antipathy are in the long run greater than those of concord and sympathy, behold our nation at present disintegrated into atoms: our activity reduces itself to personalities denying themselves one to another, groups to groups, regions to regions.

We must try the improvement of our radical being: we need, shipwrecked of personalism, to grasp any thing that makes us float by itself: this is what other times I have expressed with a cry that rose from my pained Spanish entrails: let us save ourselves in things! Then, thinking of Pestalozzi, I have seen that he did not want to say anything else with his “education of work” (Arbeitsbildung), which is, at once, education for work and education through work. Things, what are they if not our works, the product of our labor? A group of men who work at a common work receive in their hearts, by reflection, the unity of that work, and unanimity is born in them. The true community or society is founded in the unanimity of work.

Nevertheless, imagine the long rows of slaves who under a broad torrid sun, upon the burning sand, go laden with blocks of stone. From afar the pharaoh and his Court see them move like the black lines of an anthill. The pyramid is being built: beside it the oldest Sphinx, motionless: a ray of sun gilds its great granitic lips and places upon them as it were a sarcastic smile. The slave builders of pyramids do not make a work of community: the whip of the boatswain incites them: they know that that immense work is not for them, and they are nothing more than the natural force employed by someone to carve himself an indelible tomb.

The community of work must not be purely exterior: it must be communion of spirits, it must have a meaning for all who collaborate in it. The community will be cooperation.
