Abstract

Against Kerschensteiner, for whom the end of education is to form useful citizens: the pedagogue is never the philosopher of his own pedagogy, so a book of 1922 lives on the philosophy of 1890 and only shapes schools by 1940, two generations late. Citizenship is a puny attribute of the human fact, not its purpose.

As I hear, Kerschensteiner is one of the most eminent pedagogues of the present hour. However, I find that for Mr. Kerschensteiner the general end of education is to educate useful citizens, inasmuch as they must serve the ends of a determinate State and those of humanity[35]. I cannot conceive how a man of such excellent judgment can say such a thing. That gives measure of the carelessness in which the pedagogical ideas of our time go. This triviality proceeds from multiple causes; but one of them is easier to define than the others and, in a certain way, sums them all up. I refer to the constitutional anachronism that pedagogical thought usually suffers.

Pedagogy is nothing but the application to educational problems of a way of thinking and feeling about the world, let us say, of a philosophy. Nothing matters to the question whether this philosophy be a rigorous scientific system or a diffuse ideology. The important datum is that the pedagogue has almost never been the philosopher of his pedagogy.

The pedagogue who writes a book in 1922 does not ground it on the philosophical ideas of 1922. Since he is not the creator of the new ideas and emotions that will dominate tomorrow the collective spirit, he has contented himself with receiving the philosophy of his masters, therefore, of an earlier generation. In effect, the pedagogy written in 1922 is nourished by the philosophy of 1890. But since moreover a long campaign is needed for the ideas printed in the book to come to inform the laws and school life, it turns out that the doctrine of 1922 does not begin to be in force in the schools until 1940. With which we come to the grotesque situation that the children of 1940 are educated according to the ideas and feelings of 1890, and that the School, whose pretension is precisely to organize the future, lives continually retarded by two generations.

The phrase of Kerschensteiner cited a moment ago is a good example of this anachronism. In 1890 a political interpretation of history and of man governed the European soul. One still thought, with Kant and with Hegel, with Comte and Stuart Mill, that human existence, across the centuries, had been like a preparation for the conquest of political freedom and of a certain juridical order that is denominated State. But it is already a quarter of a century since this way of thinking began its ebb, and today only the stragglers insist on it, very especially the typical stragglers of our time, who are the “leftist” politicians. I do not believe there exists today in Europe any “current” head on whom it does not produce a comic effect that from the gigantic human fact what stands out as the most important, the most valuable, should be the scrawny attribute of citizenship. The pedagogues who loyally wish to place themselves at the height of the times need to take account of the formidable enlargement of horizons achieved in the last decades. Under a perspective of much greater distances, the historical evolution of man takes on a very different aspect from the one it had in the past century. The modern State and even the ideal of the modern State, which seemed to our grandfathers a definitive form, conclusion of the historical landscape, appears today as one of the many momentary gestures destined to dissolve in the incessant process of human vitality. The cosmic character of history and of man imposes itself today in such a way upon our gaze that whatever happens in the political dimension has only a superficial significance.

For this reason, whoever weighs well the meaning of the words “education of man” cannot help bursting into laughter when he reads that the end of education, nothing less than the end, is to educate citizens. It would be like saying, in other words, that the end of education is to teach men to use the umbrella. Citizen! And all the rest that man is much more deeply than citizen, more permanently? Who does not notice the incredible error of perspective that this pedagogical doctrine commits?

This way of thinking, besides being erroneous, seems to me of an excessive modesty. It is supposed that pedagogy must adapt itself to politics, with which, among other things, we submit ourselves to a new factor of anachronism. When one considers that it is the end of education to make of children useful citizens for the ends of a determinate State, one forgets that tomorrow, when the children are men, the State for which they were educated has changed. They are educated for yesterday, not for tomorrow. The best intelligences of Germany well note it now. A generation educated for an imperial State, ruled by traditional authoritarian principles, finds itself obliged to live in a democratic parliamentary State.

I do not pretend with this to deny that education must take into account that the child of today will be tomorrow a citizen or, in less circumstantial terms, an active element of a determinate historical community. But from this to defining the end of education as the manufacture of citizens there is a good stretch. And it is not enough to widen the idea, as Kerschensteiner does speaking of the ends of humanity, because it is glimpsed from the start that the alluded ends are also political, though vaguely international.

I hope that our century will react against this belittling of the educational work. There comes in Europe an exemplary devaluation of everything political. From finding itself in the first plane of human preoccupations, it will pass to a more humble rank and term. And to everyone it will seem evident that it is politics which must adapt itself to pedagogy, which will conquer its own and sublime ends. A thing, certainly, that Plato already dreamed.
