Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A reply to the attacks of Argentine writers: he wrote those essays freely, foreseeing and willing the consequences. His reason is that he owes Argentina a substantial portion of his own life—and life, being always someone’s, is for that someone the absolute, since everything else arrives through it and within it.

Ninguna fuerza externa me obligaba a pensar, manuscribir y publicar aquellos ideogramas.
Ya he empezado.
Y resultado tal me parece demasiado inoperante.
I have already received the first volleys of attacks and insults that the young Argentine writers direct at me. I can already, consequently, write this article. Through another by Victoria Ocampo, published in La Nación months ago, I had the first news of the anger that my essays «La Pampa… promesas» and «El hombre a la defensiva» had produced. Shortly after, a page of Caras y Caretas, signed by Mr. Alberti, confirmed the fact to me. Both writers stepped forward, generous, to my defence and brought forward arguments to lessen the hostility against me germinating. I thank from the heart both spontaneous paladins for the effusion of their defence, but they must permit me to add that it was not necessary. No one who knows even vaguely Argentina can doubt for a moment that in writing those essays I knew that I was going to condense upon my head all the electricities of the wrathful vituperation. But if no one can doubt that I foresaw that violent repercussion, no one can doubt that there was in me the resolution to stir it up. No external force obliged me to think, manuscript and publish those ideograms. If I did all this most freely, it is clear that I assumed, most freely also, its annoying consequences. On this it is fitting that there should not exist the slightest uncertainty.
Then, did I want, with frank free will, to see function at my expense the habitual procacity of that literary youth? To tell the truth, I had no interest whatever in it, but, by force, I had to want it also, since it was indispensable if I wanted to publish «El hombre a la defensiva». Whoever is not, completely, puerile, in willing the cause wills conjointly the varied progeny of its effects. Everything goes back, then, to the round fact that I have had the unshakeable will to write those pages. Why have I had it? The intention of insinuating it engenders the following lines, where the reader will find everything but repentance.
It is certain that not a few persons of Argentina will have said to themselves on reading my last Espectador: «Twice we have received this gentleman in our country with exuberant amiability. Is it admissible that this gentleman should pay those attentions by saying of us things that in part are exceedingly disagreeable?» I accept that the matter be posed thus, only I need to intensify it to a superlative degree.
It is not only a question of Argentina having received me with reiterated amiability. This is a lukewarm, frivolous and official expression. It is a question of much more.
At a dinner that the review Nosotros organized in my honour during my last sojourn in Buenos Aires, Doctor Alejandro Korn took the floor and said that in some chapter of Argentine history there would have to be cited, perhaps, my name. His words were, strictly speaking, much more categorical, but I translate them into the dubitative and conditional manner, in order not to implicate in my perilous wanderings a man whom I love, esteem and respect as much as Korn. I bring them, nevertheless, to mention in order to be able to add that if they are possibly, dubitatively, conditionally true, it is true with radical, indubitable and categorical truth that my biography could not be written —given that it had some interest— without dedicating some central chapters to Argentina. That is to say, that I owe, neither more nor less, a whole portion of my life —situation, emotions, deep experiences, thoughts— to that country. Thus, absolutely thus. Life, which is always of someone, is for that someone the absolute. Everything else that exists arrives through his life within his life. Thus I have in the universe and of the universe nothing more than my life and it turns out that a very important part of it is owing to Argentina. It is a question, then, not of owing attentions to that country as to so many other passers-by will happen, but of something fabulously graver: it is a question of my owing a substantial part of myself, of my life, to Argentina. And these are already grave words. And my life, which need not interest others, interests me enormously. So much so, that it is the only thing in the universe that interests me. To each one, if he analyses and understands what I say, the same happens —because his life, I repeat, is the only thing he has of the universe, because his life is, in truth, the universe.
It means, then, that I have an enormous debt with that country. And this is not words, trembling of air, calligraphy. It is not that I say that I have that debt, but that I have it, say it or not; I owe it to her, not to her enunciation; I have it and sustain it upon my effective and not verbal existence, I carry it and drag it with successive growths since, fourteen years ago, a Spanish writer unknown, I entered through the bicorn mouth of the port of Buenos Aires.
It is notorious that I have boasted for a decade of that burden. In a review of that capital I read a few months ago an interview with Count Keyserling, where this friend of mine and incalculable count made it stand that the only European who spoke with fervour of Argentina was I. Let us amputate the exaggeration of the exclusivism and there remains a pure truth.
Let it be said to me now whether I can accept that the matter of my balance of debt with Argentina be posed by an expression as lukewarm, frivolous and official as the aforesaid. No: I owe completely in earnest and I have to pay no less in earnest. I have already begun. The irritating pages of the seventh Espectador are the first coins.
The form of payment could not for me be doubtful. It had to be homogeneous with the debt. And if Argentina has contributed to making my life, I have to contribute, albeit in the minimum amount possible to a writer, to making the life of Argentina.
Would it be contributing to make the life of Argentina to verbalize praises about that country that would interest no one nor convince anyone? But even in the case that they interested and convinced, that would not be making the Argentine life, but, at the most, making the opinion of others about it. And such a result seems to me too inoperative. The decisive thing is what we are, not what others opine. A life well placed in its authentic destiny does not live on the critical benevolence of its neighbours.
But besides, whoever knows present-day Argentina knows that nothing can do it as much harm as praising it, as interesting it in the opinion of others about it; rather, it is necessary to push it towards itself, to confine it in its inexorable being. This is what El hombre a la defensiva proposes.
In it it is said that Argentina is «the people with the strongest historical springs that exists today». This is not said for the sake of saying: it is said twice and with special type so that it may stand. Which indicates that I have many laudatory things to say about Argentina —apparently those that I propagate through Europe, according to Keyserling. And those things are, in part, excellent as that sentence indicates. I could, then, with entire sincerity of writer and following my uninterrupted usage of writing nothing but what I believe to the root of myself, have magnified before the European public that irritable nation. What is more, no one who follows my intellectual work will doubt that behind that sentence about the historical springs of Argentina there hide theories about the social and the historical that paw the ground in pure eagerness to express themselves. But I have repressed them and of all that I enunciate only that theorem on the historical vitality of Argentina, a theorem which, formulated dryly, evidently commits me before my European readers, who will see in it a paradox and an arbitrariness.
Each one manages himself with the apparatus of his conscience. Mine invited me to arrest the praise of Argentina. Was it wanted that with praises I pay my debt? That my payment consist in doing something that Argentina… might be grateful to me for? That I pay my creditor by making him my debtor? That I redeem the old «attentions» by giving cause for other new ones?
All that seems to me ridiculous, petit-bourgeois, untimely and repugnant. But, besides, it is not a question of its seeming to me good or bad. If to return to Argentina the benefit of its intrusion into my life I had to collaborate in hers and intrude into it, the matter fell outside the area of my choice. All living, individual or collective, is a doing; more precisely, a making-oneself. Hence life always presents itself, in its most intimate and radical aspect, as a task. And if the conscience does not go turbid, we see with indomitable evidence the plane of that task and in it the place and the portion of effort that falls to us. There is no more than one way of collaborating in the life of another: resolutely lending a shoulder there where one sees that it is needed.
Tutto ciò mi sembra ridicolo, petit-bourgeois, extemporaneo e ripugnante.
Yo no podía elegir mi tarea.
Now then: I have seen that today the most substantive problem of Argentine existence is its moral reform. This word «moral» irritates me. It irritates me because in its traditional use and abuse one understands by moral I know not what added ornament placed upon the life and being of a man or of a people. For this reason I prefer that the reader understand it by what it means, not in the opposition moral-immoral, but in the sense it acquires when of someone it is said that he is demoralized. Then one notices that morality is not a supplementary and luxurious performance that man adds to his being in order to obtain a prize, but that it is the very being of man when he is in his own hinge and vital efficiency. A demoralized man is simply a man who is not in possession of himself, who is outside his radical authenticity and for that reason does not live his life and for that reason neither creates nor fecundates nor fills his destiny. For me morality is not what man ought to be, but that he may apparently dispense with being, but rather it is simply the inexorable being of each man, of each people. For that reason, from always and once more in my last conferences in Buenos Aires, when I announced a possible course on Ethics —which I no longer well know if I shall give— I proclaimed as fundamental imperative of mine the cry of the old Pindar: genoi’ hoios essi —become what you are.
In this sense, the Argentine man is demoralized and he is so at a grave moment of his national history, when —after two generations in which he has lived from outside— he has to return to living from his own substance in all orders: economic, political, intellectual. Such is my conviction matured silently over many years and which it is not easy that the diatribes, insolences and jests of those young Argentine intellectuals, who employ in narcissistic gesticulations their time, instead of lending a shoulder, like me, without postures, without «manners», to the task of making a nation which, by fortune not deserved by them, can be a formidable nation, should make vacillate in the least. Do those young men know, who employ their pens more than for writing —for that sovereign labour of creating which is writing— only, like the peacock, to make the wheel —do those young men know what it is to be born in a people that can be a great nation? Do they know that there are very few peoples that can be so?
I could not choose my task. I have done nothing but accept it and begin to fulfil it. It is necessary to call the Argentine to the authentic depth of himself, to withdraw him to the rigorous discipline of being himself, of plunging into the hard task proposed by his individual destiny. Only thus can the collective morality be modified, the type of preferred values, the standard of virtues and modes of being which, prestiged, may inform with fertile automatism the Argentine existence.
A first push towards this my pages of the Espectador signify. They are drastic, they are annoying, they are unpleasant. But I very much doubt that that call to the depths can be achieved in another form. A different thing would be pretty pages to be read, which might attract applause towards their author. But it was not a question of a literary work —«El hombre a la defensiva» is badly written—, but of an operative work, which should act even upon him who was most hostile to it. There may be in my essay as many errors of detail as one may wish to find, but its substance —the posing of his own intimacy as a problem for the Argentine— cannot be erased nor sophisticated: it is there, already operating like an alkaloid upon the Argentine soul, including that of the young literati who dedicate to me the homage of an insult.
For the same reason, I must not exaggerate the proportions of my sacrifice. The conviction of having attempted what my destiny proposed to me makes me automatically impermeable to all the vituperations and anaesthetizes me in advance for all the violations.
Now those and these will come. But then, not much time passing, groups of other young men of more authentic life —in some University, in the very patrician society of Argentina— will think otherwise. And I have written those pages, with many more that will in their hour see the light, so that first the one and then the other may happen. Beethoven titled one of his sonatas: Towards joy through pain. I could have titled these pages of mine: Towards gratitude through insult.

Ora verranno quelli e queste.
