Abstract
An article defending the Republic: in politics there are no principles—those belong to geometry—only historical circumstances that define what must be done. The Republic must be defended because it is the one regime that corrects itself and tolerates no falsification of itself, and because only through it can Spaniards become a nation.

¿Lo hará por misticismo republicano? Tampoco.
Will he do it out of republican mysticism? Neither. In matter of politics I admit no mysticism, I do not even admit that one be republican, as it is usually said, «on principles». I have always maintained that in politics there is not that which is called principle. Principles are things for Geometry. In politics there are only historical circumstances, and these define what must be done. I maintained three years ago, and maintain today with greater vigour, that the only possibility that Spain may save itself historically, remake itself and triumph is the Republic, because only through it can the Spaniards come to nationalize themselves, that is, to feel themselves a Nation. And this is a thing infinitely more important than the stupidities or excesses committed by some rulers during the anecdote of a couple of years. Already at this hour, in these elections, although the electors, still clumsy, send to Parliament people in good part as undesirable as the previous ones, they have felt that they were acting upon the national body, they have woken to the consciousness that it was a question of their own destiny. They have not yet voted by and for the nation, but moved reactively by particular interests, of material order or of spiritual order, property or religion —for the case it is the same, because both interests, although respectable, are particular, they are not the Nation. But there one begins: it is the apprenticeship of politics which ends by discovering the Nation as the most authentic, most concrete and most decisive political interest, because it is the interest of all.
Many times, one of them in the full Dictatorship, I have affirmed that the Republic is the only Regime that automatically corrects itself, and consequently, does not tolerate its own falsification. The Republic, either expresses a national reality, or cannot live. The Republic is, whether one wants it or not, historical sincerity, and that is the supreme force to which a people can arrive. When this has conquered its own sincerity, when it acquires that radical consciousness of itself, nothing nor no one can place itself before it. The Monarchies, on the other hand, easily become masks that a people puts on itself, and do not let it see itself and feel itself and be, and perhaps under the prim mask of a Court they go dying and rotting inside.
Let the monarchists, then, stay quiet. We have a profound right —what the devil, right!—, we Spaniards have an inexcusable obligation to make thoroughly the republican experience. And this experience is long like everything that possesses historical dimensions. Many things have to happen. The first thing that had to happen was that the so-called «lefts» vomited all the follies they had in their bellies. That this has happened is already an advance and a gain, it is not pure loss. Now it will happen that the so-called «rights» are going to practise the same operation with theirs. Then, Spain, if we prepare it from now, will take the ascending way.
Since we have, then, the obligation to make that great experience, know it, we are resolved to defend the Republic. I too. Without fits and starts nor gestures, which I detest. But let it stand: I too. I, who hardly exchange a word with those men who have governed these years, some of whom seem to me no longer wild boars, but rhinoceroses.
But what did you want, Spaniards? That wonderful men had been there waiting, armed cap-a-pie, to govern you? But what had you done before to have those men? Do you believe that those things are given as gifts, that achieving them does not suppose pains, efforts, anguishes for peoples? If you want gifts, if you want to remain in your conception of life narrow, interested, without altitude and without mettle, without breadth of horizon ahead, without craving for strong enterprises, without clarity of head, you must content yourselves for the ages of ages with choosing between don Marcelino Domingo and Mr. Goicoechea.
Lo farà per misticismo repubblicano? Nemmeno.
Stiano, dunque, cheti i monarchici.
