Abstract

The opening lessons of the 1929 course ‘¿Qué es filosofía?’, published in La Nación. It observes that after sixty antiphilosophical years the philosopher again wants a maximum of philosophy, and to explain the shift opens the theme of the ‘drama of generations’: ideas change history only if masses adopt them, and masses adopt them only if they find them already preformed in themselves.

In February of 1929 I began a course at the University of Madrid entitled: «What is philosophy?» The closure of the University for political causes and my consequent resignation obliged me to continue it in the profanity of a theatre. Since perhaps some Argentine readers might be interested in the themes of that course, I make the attempt to publish in La Nación its first lessons. In them I reproduce some things from my conferences at Amigos del Arte and at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Buenos Aires.

THE DRAMA OF THE GENERATIONS

In a period of thirty years, the attitude of the philosopher before his own labour has changed. I do not now refer to the doctrinal content of philosophy being today different from that of a quarter of a century ago, but to the fact that before elaborating and possessing this content, at beginning his work, the philosopher feels himself with a temper or predisposition very different from those which the thinker of the next generations found in himself. The last sixty years of the nineteenth century have been one of the stages least favourable to philosophy. It was an antiphilosophical age. If philosophy were something of which one could radically dispense, there is no doubt that during those years it would have disappeared completely. As it is not possible to scrape from the human mind, awake to culture, its philosophizing dimension, what was done was to reduce it to a minimum. Now then: the temper or predisposition with which the philosopher today begins his work consists precisely in a clear craving to go out again to a philosophy of the high seas, plenary, complete; in short, to a maximum of philosophy.

And it is natural that before such a change it should occur to us to ask: how was that reaction and shrinkage of the philosophical spirit produced, and what has happened since so that it should again dilate, regain faith in itself and even return to taking the offensive? The sufficient clarification of one and the other fact would only be found by defining the structure of European man in one or the other time. Every explanation which, to understand the visible changes that appear on the historical surface, does not descend until it finds the latent, mysterious changes that are produced in the entrails of the human soul, is in turn superficial. It may, like the one we are going to attempt of the alluded change, suffice for the limited effects of our theme; but with the knowledge that it is insufficient, that it takes from the historical fact its dimension of depth and converts the process of history into a plane of only two dimensions.

But to inquire in earnest why those variations happen in the manner of thinking philosophically, or politically, or artistically, is equivalent to asking oneself a question of excessive size; it is equivalent to posing the question of why times change, why we neither feel nor think today as a hundred years ago, why humanity does not live stationary in an identical, unvaried repertoire, but, on the contrary, always goes about restless, unfaithful to itself, fleeing today from its yesterday, modifying at every hour equally the format of its hat and the regime of its heart. In short, why there is history. It is not necessary to announce that we are going to slant respectfully so lofty a question by passing by. But it matters to me to say that the historians have left until now intact the most radical cause of historical changes. That one or several men should invent a new idea or a new feeling does not make the countenance of history vary, the tone of the times, as the colour of the Atlantic does not change because a marine painter cleans in it his brush laden with vermilion. But if of a sudden an immense mass of men adopts that idea and vibrates with that feeling, then the area of history, the face of the times, is tinged with a new colouring. Now then; the immense masses of men do not adopt an idea, do not vibrate with a peculiar feeling, simply because it is preached to them. It is necessary that that idea and that feeling be found in them preformed, native, ready. Without that radical, spontaneous predisposition of the mass, every preacher would be a preacher in deserts.

Hence the historical changes suppose the birth of a type of man different in more or in less from the one that already existed; that is, they suppose a change of generations. For years I have preached to the historians that the concept of generation is the most important in history, and there must have come into the world a new generation of historians, because I see that this idea has caught hold, above all in Germany[75].

For something important to change in the world it is necessary that the type of man —it is understood— and that of woman change; it is necessary that crowds of creatures appear with a vital sensibility different from the ancient one and homogeneous among themselves. That is the generation: a human variety in the rigorous sense that the naturalists give to the concept of «variety». Its members come into the world endowed with certain typical characters, dispositions, preferences, which lend them a common physiognomy, differentiating them from the preceding generation. (See El tema de nuestro tiempo).

But this idea inoculates sudden energy and drama into the fact, as elemental as unexplored, that in every present three generations coexist: the young, the mature men, the old. Because this means that every historical actuality, every «today», envelops in strictness three distinct times, three different «todays»; or said in another way: that the present is rich in three great vital dimensions, which coexist lodged in it whether they want to or not, interlaced one with another and, by force, being different, in essential hostility. «Today» is for some twenty years; for others, forty; for others, sixty; and the fact that, being three modes of life so distinct, they have to be the same «today» declares abundantly the dynamic drama, the conflict and collision that constitutes the background of the historical matter, of all present-day coexistence. And in the light of this warning one sees the equivocation hidden in the apparent clarity of a date. 1929 seems a single time; but in 1929 live a lad, a mature man and an old man, and that figure is tripled into three different meanings and at once embraces the three; it is the unity of a historical time of three distinct ages. We are all contemporaries, we live in the same time and atmosphere, but we contribute to forming them in different time. One coincides only with one’s coevals. Contemporaries are not coevals; it is urgent to distinguish in history between coevality and contemporaneity[76]. Lodged in one same external and chronological time, three distinct vital times coexist. This is what I am wont to call the essential anachronism of history. Thanks to that interior disequilibrium it moves, changes, rolls, flows. If all contemporaries were coevals, history would stop, ankylosed, petrified, in a definitive gesture, without possibility of any radical innovation. At some time I have represented the generation as «a caravan within which man goes prisoner, but at the same time secretly voluntary and satisfied. He goes in it faithful to the poets of his age, to the political ideas of his time, to the type of woman triumphant in his youth and even to the manner of walking in use at twenty-five. From time to time one sees another caravan pass with its rare foreign profile: it is the other generation. Perhaps on a festival day the orgy mingles both, but at the hour of living the normal existence, the chaotic fusion disintegrates into the two truly organic groups. Each individual mysteriously recognizes the others of his collectivity, as the ants of each ant-hill are distinguished by a peculiar odour.

»The discovery that we are fatally ascribed to a certain age-group and to a style of life, is one of the melancholy experiences that sooner or later every sensitive man comes to make. A generation is an integral fashion of existence that fixes itself indelibly upon the individual. In certain savage peoples the members of each coeval group are recognized by their tattoo. The fashion of epidermal drawing that was in use when they were adolescents has remained incrusted in their being irremediably»[77]. «This fatality, like all, has some pores through which certain genially endowed individuals know how to evade it. There is he who conserves until senectitude an inexhausted power of plasticity, a perduring youth, which permits him to be reborn and reform himself twice and even three times during life. Men like this usually have the character of precursors, and the new generation senses in them an elder brother of premature advent. But these cases belong to the order of exceptions, which in the biological more than in any other kingdom confirm the rule».

I

In somma, perché c’è storia.

But I wanted simply to say that the articulation of three generations in every present produces the change of the times. The generation of the children is always a little different from that of the fathers: it represents as it were a new level from which existence is felt. Only that, ordinarily, the difference between the children and the fathers is very small; so that the common nucleus of coincidences predominates, and then the children see themselves as continuators and perfecters of the type of life that their fathers carried. But at times the distance is enormous: the new generation hardly finds community with the preceding one. Then one speaks of historical crisis. Our time is of this class and it is so in the superlative. Although the change was coming prepared subterraneously, it has burst forth with such brusqueness and promptness, that in a few years it has transformed the face of life.

It is fitting that we have taken this first contact with the theme of the generations. But what has been said is only, in effect, a first contact, an external aspect of this tremendous and radical fact with which we are going to stumble in a much more vigorous and decisive form when the hour comes to us of palpating that which so gallantly and without trembling, for not well knowing what we say, we call «our life».

But now it is a question of indicating the most immediate motives that produced the retraction and narrowing of the philosophical spirit in the last sixty years of the nineteenth century and those which, inversely, have fomented its present expansion and strengthening.

IMPERIALISM OF PHYSICS

Every science or knowledge has a theme —what that science knows or tries to know— and, besides, has a mode of knowing what it knows. Thus mathematics possesses a theme —numbers and extension— distinct from the theme proper to biology, which are the organic phenomena. But, besides, mathematics differs from biology in its mode of knowledge, in its class of knowing. For the mathematician, to know, to cognize, is to be able to deduce a proposition through reasonings founded on indubitable evidences. On the other hand, biology contents itself with approximate generalizations of imprecise facts that the senses offer us. As modes of knowledge both sciences possess, then, a very distinct rank; the mathematical is exemplary; the biological is extremely coarse. Mathematics has, on the other hand, the inconvenience that the objects for which its theories hold are not real, but, as Descartes and Leibniz said, «imaginary». But here is that in the sixteenth century there begins an intellectual discipline —the nuova scienza, of Galileo—, which on one side possesses all the deductive rigour of mathematics and on the other speaks to us of real objects, of the stars and, in general, of bodies. For the first time this happened in the annals of thought; for the first time there existed a knowledge which, obtained through precise deductions, was at once confirmed by the sensible observation of the facts; that is, which tolerated a double criterion of certainty: the pure reasoning by which we believe we arrive at certain conclusions and the simple perception, which confirms those conclusions of pure theory. The inseparable union of both criteria constitutes the mode of knowledge, called experimental, which characterizes physics. It is not strange that, from the outset, a science endowed with such a fortunate condition should begin to stand out above the others and attract the enthusiasm of the best. Even from an exclusively theoretical point of view, even as mere theory or strict knowledge, there is no doubt that physics is an intellectual marvel. Nevertheless, it was hidden from no one, from the outset, that the coincidence between the deductive conclusions of rational physics and the sensible observations of experiment were no longer exact, but only approximate. It is true that this approximation was so great, that it did not impede the practical march of science.

It is certain, nevertheless, that these two characters of physical knowledge —its practical exactness and its confirmation by the sensible facts (let us not forget the pathetic circumstance that the stars seem to submit to the laws that the astronomers dictate to them and that with rare fidelity they come to the appointment that these give them at such an hour at such a point of the firmament)—, those two characters, I say, would not have sufficed to carry to the extreme triumph that the physical science later achieved. A third peculiarity came to exalt without measure this mode of knowing. It turned out that the physical truths, above their theoretical qualities, had the condition of being usable for the vital conveniences of man. Setting out from them, he could intervene in Nature and accommodate it to his own benefit. This third character —its practical utility for the dominion over matter— is no longer a perfection or virtue of physics as theory and knowledge. In Greece this utilitarian fertility would not have reached decisive influence over minds, but in Europe it coincided with the predominance of a type of man —the so-called bourgeois— who felt not contemplative but practical vocation. The bourgeois wants to lodge himself comfortably in the world, and for that to intervene in it modifying it at his pleasure. For that reason the bourgeois age honours itself above all by the triumph of industrialism, and in general of the useful techniques of life, such as are medicine, economy, administration. Physics acquired an unrivalled prestige because from it emanated the machine and medicine. The middle masses became interested in it not out of curiosity, but out of material interest. In such an atmosphere there was produced what we might call «imperialism of physics».

For us, born and educated in an age that participates in this manner of feeling, it seems a very natural thing, the most natural and discreet, that the primacy among the modes of knowledge should be granted to that which, however it may be as theory, provides us the practical dominion over matter. But although born and educated in that age, some new cycle begins in us, since we no longer content ourselves with that first impulse which makes us see as so natural the practical utilization as the norm of truth. On the contrary, we begin to realize that that endeavour to dominate matter and make it comfortable, that enthusiasm for comfort is, if one makes of it a principle, as debatable as any other. And put on alert by that suspicion, we begin to see that comfort is simply a subjective predilection —roughly said, a caprice— which Western humanity has had for two hundred years, but which by itself reveals no superiority of character. There is he who prefers the comfortable to everything; there is he who gives it no great importance. While Plato meditated the thoughts that have made possible modern physics and with it comfort, he led, like all the Greeks, a very harsh life, and in the matter of tools, vehicles, heating and household furnishings, truly barbarous. At the same date, the Chinese, who have never thought a scientific thought, who have never spun a theory, wove delicious fabrics and made useful objects and constructed artefacts of exquisite comfort. While in Athens the Platonic Academy invented pure mathematics, in Peking the pocket handkerchief is invented.

Let it stand, then, that the craving for comfortableness, ultimate ratio of preference for physics, is not an index of superiority. Some times have felt it, and others not. Everyone who knows how to look at ours with a somewhat piercing glance believes he foresees that, notwithstanding the present appearances, it is going to become mediocrely enthusiastic about the imperative of comfort. It is going to use it, attend it, conserve the achieved and try to increase it; but precisely, without enthusiasm, and not for its own sake, but in order to be able to be free for uncomfortable exercises.

Since the craving for comfort is not without more a sign of progress, but appears in history distributed like chance over epochs of very different altitude, it would be a curious theme for the curious to ascertain in what these coincide; or said in another way: what human condition usually leads to this devotion for the comfortable. I know not what would be the result of that research. Only, in passing, I underline this coincidence: the two historical places of greatest attention to comfort have been this last European bicentury and the Chinese civilization. What is there in common between those two human cities so different, so disparate? As far as I know, only this: in that epoch reigned the «good bourgeois», the type of man who represents the will of prose, and, on the other hand, the Chinese is notoriously the born philistine; be this said carelessly, without any insistence or formality[78].

The fact is that the philosopher of the bourgeoisie, Auguste Comte, will express the sentiment of knowledge with his known formula: Science d’où prévoyance; prévoyance d’où action. That is to say, the sense of knowing is foreseeing, and the sense of foreseeing is making action possible. Whence it results that action —it is understood, advantageous— is what defines the truth of knowledge. And in effect: already at the end of the last century, a great physicist, Boltzmann, said: «Neither logic, nor philosophy, nor metaphysics, decide in the last instance whether something is true or false, but only action decides it. For this reason I do not consider the conquests of technique as simple secondary precipitates of natural science, but as logical proofs of it. If we had not proposed those practical conquests to ourselves, we would not know how we must reason. There are no correct reasonings but those which have practical results»[79]. In his Discourse on the positive spirit, the same Comte had already suggested that technique regiments science, and not the reverse.

According to this manner of thinking, utility is not, then, an unforeseen precipitate and as it were a tip of truth, but on the contrary: truth is the intellectual precipitate of practical utility. A short time later, in the puerile dawns of our century, there was made of this thought a philosophy: pragmatism. With the sympathetic cynicism, proper to the Yankees, proper to every new people —a new people, however well it goes, is an enfant terrible—, North American pragmatism has dared to proclaim this thesis: «There is no more truth than success in dealing with things». And with this thesis as audacious as ingenuous, so ingenuously audacious, the northern lobe of the American continent has made its entry into the millenary history of philosophy[80].

Let one not confuse the scant esteem that pragmatism deserves as philosophy and general thesis with a preconceived, arbitrary and devout disdain towards the fact of human practicism in benefit of pure contemplation. Here we attempt to wring the neck of all sanctimony, including the scientific and cultural sanctimony that is ecstatic before pure knowledge without making itself dramatic question of it. This separates us radically from the ancient thinkers —from Plato as from Aristotle— and must constitute one of the gravest themes of our meditation. On descending to the decisive problem, which is the definition of «our life», we shall try to make a brave anatomy of that perennial duality which unfolds life into vita contemplativa and vita activa, into action and contemplation, into Martha and Mary.

Now it is only pretended to insinuate that the imperial triumph of physics is not owed so much to its quality as knowledge as to a social fact. Society has become interested in physics for its fecund utility, and that social interest has hypertrophied for a century the faith that the physicist has in himself. What in general has happened to him is what in species happens to the physician. No one will consider medicine as a model of science; nevertheless, the cult that in the houses of the valetudinarians is devoted to the physician (as in other times to the magician) provides him a security in his office and person, an impertinent audacity as graceful as little founded in reason, because the physician uses, handles the results of some sciences, but does not usually be, neither little nor much, a man of science, a theoretical soul.

Good fortune, the favour of the social environment, usually makes us exorbitant, makes us petulant and aggressive. This has happened to the physicist, and for that reason the intellectual life of Europe has suffered for almost a hundred years what might be called the «terrorism of the laboratories».

La Nación, 21 September 1930

III

THE «SCIENCE» IS MERE SYMBOLISM

In what preceded, it was my purpose to enunciate the immediate causes —even knowing that they constitute an insufficient explanation— of why a century ago the spirit of the philosophers contracted and narrowed and why, on the other hand, today it returns to dilating. But I could only speak of the first point. Philosophy —I said— remained crushed, humiliated by the imperialism of physics and frightened by the intellectual terrorism of the laboratories. The natural sciences dominated the environment, and the environment is one of the ingredients of our personality, as atmospheric pressure is one of the factors that compose our physical form. If we were not pressed and limited, we would touch with our occiput the stars, as Horace wanted; that is, we would be formless, indefinite and impersonal. Each one of us is half what he is and half what the environment is in which he lives. When this coincides with our peculiarity and favours it, our person realizes itself entirely, feels itself corroborated by the surrounding and incited to the expansion of its intimate spring. When the environment is hostile to us, as it is also within us, it obliges us to a perpetual dissociation and struggle, it depresses us and makes it difficult for our personality to develop and fully fructify. This happened to the philosophers under the atmosphere imposed by the tyranny of the experimental Soviets. It is not necessary to say that none of these words of mine, which at times carry more than enough marked profile, signifies censure either moral or intellectual for those men of science nor for those philosophers. They were as they had to be, and it has been exceedingly fertile that it was so. Not a few qualities of the new philosophy are owing to that stage of forced humility, as the Hebrew soul became much more subtle and interesting after the slavery of Babylon. We shall see, in concrete, how after having suffered with blush the philosophers that the men of science disdained them, reproaching them that philosophy is not a science, today that vituperation pleases us, at least me, and gathering it in the air we return it, saying: «Philosophy is not a science because it is much more».

But now it is fitting to ask oneself why this new enthusiasm of the philosophers for their philosophy has been produced, this confidence in the sense of their labour and this resolute air that leads us to be philosophers without fearfulness nor timidity, audaciously, jovially.

Two great facts, in my judgement, have favoured this mutation.

We have seen that philosophy had remained reduced or little less to the theory of knowledge. Thus were titled the greater part of the philosophical books published between 1860 and 1920. And I noticed the too surprising fact that in those books thus titled there was never found posed in earnest this question: What is knowledge? Since this is a little and even a much monstrous, we surprise here one of those cases of determined blindness that the pressure of an environment produces in man, imposing upon him as evident and indisputable certain suppositions which are precisely what it would most be fitting to discuss. These blindnesses vary from one epoch to another; but they never fail and we have ours. The reason of this will occupy us another day, when we see that living is always done «from» or «upon» certain suppositions, which are like the soil on which to live we lean or of which we participate. And this, in all orders: in science, as in morals or politics, as in art. Every idea is thought and every picture is painted from certain suppositions or conventions so basic, so taken for granted for him who thought the idea or painted the picture, that he does not even notice them, for that very reason he does not introduce them into his idea nor into his picture, we do not find them there put, but precisely sup-posed and as left behind the back. For that reason, sometimes, we do not understand an idea or a picture: we lack the word of the enigma, the key of the secret convention. And since, I repeat, every epoch —I am going to specify more: every generation— sets out from more or less distinct suppositions, it means that the system of the truths and that of the aesthetic, moral, political, religious values, has inexorably a historical dimension, are relative to a certain human vital chronology, hold for certain men only. Truth is historical. How, nevertheless, truth can and has to pretend to be suprahistorical, without relativities, absolute, is the great question. Many of my readers already know that for me resolving within the possible that question constitutes «the theme of our time».

The indisputable or undisputed supposition that the thinker of eighty years ago carried in the mass of his blood was that there is no more knowledge of the world sensu stricto than physical science; that there is no more truth about the real than the «physical truth». We vaguely glimpsed the other day that perhaps there exist other types of «truth», and that the «physical truth», even looked at from outside, has, certainly, two admirable qualities: its exactness and its being governed by a double criterion of certainty: rational deduction and confirmation by the senses.

But these qualities, magnificent as they are, do not suffice to assure that there is no more perfect knowledge of the world, higher «type of truth» than physical science and physical truth. To affirm this it would be necessary to develop in all its amplitude the question: What would be that which we would call exemplary knowledge, prototype of truth, if we filled with precision the sense that the word to know carries in itself? Only when we know what knowledge is, in its plenary signification, can we see whether those which man possesses fill or not that signification or merely approach it. Until this is done, one cannot speak in earnest of theory of knowledge, and, in effect, with the philosophy of recent times having pretended to be nothing but that, it turns out that it has not been even that.

But, in the meantime, physics grew, and in the last fifty years arrived at such an amplitude and perfection, at a degree of precision and a sphere of observations so gigantic, that it was necessary to reform its principles. Be this said for whoever vulgarly believes that the modification of a doctrinal system indicates little firmness of a science. The truth is the contrary. Because the principles of Galileo and Newton were valid, the portentous development of physics was possible, and this development reached a limit which made it obligatory to amplify —purifying them— those principles. This has brought the «crisis of principles» —the Grundlagenkrise— that physics suffers today and which is a fortunate disease of growth. I do not know why we usually understand the word «crisis» with a sad meaning. Crisis is nothing but intense and deep change; it can be a change for the worse, but also a change for the better, as happens with the present crisis of physics. There is no better symptom of maturity in a science than the crisis of principles. It supposes that science finds itself so sure of itself that it gives itself the luxury of submitting rudely to revision its principles; that is, that it demands of them greater vigour and firmness. The intellectual vigour of a man, as of a science, is measured by the dose of scepticism, of doubt, that it is capable of digesting, of assimilating. The robust theory feeds on doubt and is not the ingenuous confidence that has not experienced hesitations; it is not the innocent confidence, but rather the security in the midst of the storm, the confidence in distrust. Certainly it is that one, confidence, which remains triumphing in this and over it, which measures the intellectual vigour. On the other hand, doubt not subjugated, distrust not digested is… «neurasthenia».

The physical principles are the soil of this science. Upon them the investigator walks. But when one has to reform them, they cannot be reformed from within physics, but one has to step out of it. To reform the soil it is necessary, evidently, to lean on the subsoil. Hence the physicists saw themselves obliged to philosophize about their science, and in this order the most characteristic fact of the present moment is the philosophical preoccupation of the physicists. From Poincaré, Mach and Duhem up to Einstein and Weyl, with their disciples and followers, there has been going on constituting a theory of physical knowledge owing to the physicists themselves. It is clear that they have all received great influences from the philosophical past; but the curious thing of the case is that, while philosophy itself exaggerated its cult of physics as a type of knowledge, the theory of the physicists ended up discovering that physics is an inferior form of knowledge; to wit: that it is a symbolic knowledge.

The director of the «Kursaal», who counts the hangers of the cloakroom, ascertains thus the number of overcoats and greatcoats that hung from the hangers, and thanks to that, knows approximately the number of persons who attended the party. Nevertheless, he has neither seen the garments nor the public.

If one compares the content of physics with what the corporeal world is, hardly any similarity would be found. They are like two different languages that permit only translation. Physics is nothing more than symbolic correspondence.

Why do we know that physics is that? Because many are the equally possible correspondences; as the ordering of things is possible in the most diverse forms.

On a certain solemn occasion Einstein summarized the situation of physics, as mode of knowledge, with these words (1918, speech to Planck on his sixtieth birthday): «The evolution of our science has shown that among the imaginable theoretical constructions there is always one in each case that decidedly demonstrates its superiority over the others. No one who has well penetrated the matter will deny that the world of our perceptions determines practically without equivocation which theoretical system has to be chosen. Nevertheless, there is no logical path that leads to the principles of the theory».

That is to say, that many theories are equally adequate, strictly speaking, and that the superiority of one is founded in practical motives. The facts recommend it, but do not impose it.

Only in certain points does the doctrinal body of physics touch the real of Nature: they are the experiments.

And the experiment is a manipulation of ours through which we intervene in Nature, obliging it to respond. It is not, then, Nature, without more and as it is, that the experiment reveals to us, but only its determinate reaction before our determinate intervention. Consequently, and this matters to me to leave it underlined in formal expression, the so-called physical reality is a dependent and not absolute reality, a quasi-reality, because it is conditional and relative to man. In short, the physicist calls reality what happens if he executes a manipulation. Only in function of this does that reality exist.

Now then: philosophy seeks, precisely, as reality what is with independence of our actions, what does not depend on them; rather, these depend on that plenary reality.

THE SCIENCES IN REBELLION

It has been shameful that after so much theory of knowledge manufactured by the philosophers the physicists themselves should have had to take charge of giving the last precision to the character of their knowledge and reveal to us that, far from representing the exemplariness and prototype of knowing, it is in strictness an inferior species of theory, distant from the object it attempts to penetrate.

It turns out, then, that these sciences —above all physics— advance making of what was their limitation the creative principle of their concepts. Therefore, to improve, they do not attempt utopias of jumping outside their shadow, overcoming their fatal and native term, but, on the contrary, accept it gladly, and leaning on it, installing themselves without nostalgias within it, they manage to arrive at their own plenitude. The attitude opposite to this was the dominant one in the last century: then each one aspired to be unlimited, to be what the others were and he was not. It is the century in which a music —that of Wagner— does not content itself with being music, but substitute of philosophy and even of religion; it is the century in which physics wants to be metaphysics and philosophy wants to be physics, and poetry, painting and melody, and politics does not content itself with being politics, but aspires to be a religious creed and, what is more outrageous, to make men happy.

Is there not in the new attitude of the sciences, which prefer to confine each one in its precinct and orbit, as it were the indication of a new human sensibility that tries to resolve the problem of life by an inverse method, each being and each office accepting its own destiny, striking root in it, and instead of going astray illusorily, filling well and solidly up to the brims its authentic and untransferable profile? Let this remain here noted in passing, which another day we shall meet face to face.

The fact is that this recent capitis diminutio of physics as theory has acted upon the spiritual state of the philosophers, liberating them for their vocation. Once the idolatry of experiment is overcome, physical knowledge confined to its modest orbit, the way remains open for other modes of knowing and alive the sensibility for the truly philosophical problems.

Now we believe that it was a superstition that kept us prostrate before the so-called «scientific truth»; it is understood the class of truth proper to physics and cognate disciplines.

But another very important fact has contributed to the liberation.

Let it be remembered that the one previously described could be formulated thus: each science accepts its limitation and makes of it its positive method. The fact that I am now going to rapidly outline is a step further in the same sense: each science makes itself independent of the others, that is, does not accept their jurisdiction.

Here too the new physics offers us the clearest and best-known example. For Galileo, the mission of physics consisted in discovering the special laws that govern bodies, «in addition to the general geometrical laws». That the latter held sway over corporeal phenomena never once occurred to him to doubt. Hence he did not trouble to devise experiments proving nature’s docility to the Euclidean theorems. He accepted in advance, as something evident in itself and ineluctable, the superior jurisdiction of geometry over physics —or, saying the same thing in another form— he believed that the geometrical laws were physical laws ex abundantia or in an eminent degree. For me the point of most vigorous genius in Einstein’s work lies in the decision with which he frees himself from this traditional prejudice: when he observes that phenomena do not behave according to Euclid’s law and finds himself faced with the conflict between the geometrical jurisdiction and the exclusively physical one, he does not hesitate to declare the latter sovereign. Comparing his solution with Lorentz’s, two opposed mental types are perceived. To explain Michelson’s experiment, Lorentz resolves, following tradition, that physics adapt itself to geometry. The body must contract so that geometric space remains intact and in force. Einstein, on the contrary, decides that geometry and space adapt themselves to physics and to the corporeal phenomenon.

Parallel attitudes we find in the other sciences with such frequency that I am likewise surprised not to have seen noted anywhere this character so general and pronounced in recent thought.

Pavlov’s reflexology and Hering’s theory of the light sense are two essays, classics by now, in building a physiology independent of physics and of psychology. In them the biological phenomenon is taken as such in what it has of alien to the common condition of physical or psychological fact, and it is treated by research methods exclusive to physiology.

But where this new scientific temper appears most acutely, almost scandalously, is in mathematics. Its subordination to logic had come in the last generations to become almost identity. But lo, the Dutchman Brouwer discovers that the logical axiom called the «excluded third» does not hold for mathematical entities, and that one must make a mathematics «without logic», faithful only to itself, indocile to foreign axioms.

It cannot surprise us —once we have caught a glimpse of this tendency of the new thought— the recent appearance of a theology that rebels against the philosophical jurisdiction. For until today theology was an endeavour to adapt revealed truth to philosophical reason, an attempt to make the unreason of mystery admissible to it. But the new «dialectical theology» breaks radically with so ancient a usage and declares the knowledge of God independent and «totally» sovereign. It thus inverts the attitude of the theologian, whose specific task consisted in taking revealed truth from man and his scientific norms; hence he speaks about God from man. This yielded an anthropocentric theology. But Barth and his colleagues turn the procedure inside out and elaborate a theocentric theology. Man, by definition, can know nothing about God setting out from himself and his intra-human mind. He is a mere receiver of the knowledge that God has of himself and that he sends to man in small portions through revelation. The theologian has no other office than to purify his ear where God breathes into him his own truth, a divine truth incommensurable with all human truth and, for that very reason, independent. In this way theology washes its hands of the philosophical jurisdiction. The modification is all the more notable in that it has occurred in the midst of Protestantism, where the humanization of theology, its surrender to philosophy, had advanced much farther than in the Catholic camp.

There dominates today, then, in the sciences a propensity diametrically opposed to that of thirty or forty years ago. Then one science or another sought to hold sway over the others, to extend over them its domestic method, and the others humbly tolerated this invasion. Now each science not only accepts its native deficiency, but repels every pretension to be legislated by another.

(Note parallel phenomena in present-day art and politics).

These are the most important characters of the intellectual style that has manifested itself in these last years. I believe they can lead to a great age of human intellection. With only one reservation. It is not possible for the sciences to remain in that position of intractable independence. Without losing what they have now conquered, they must manage to articulate themselves one into another —which is not to subordinate themselves. And this, precisely, this they can do only if they take again firm ground in philosophy. A clear symptom that they are moving toward this new systematization is the growing frequency with which the individual scientist feels forced to probe —by the very urgency of his problems— into philosophical waters.

But my present subject does not allow me to stray into considerations on the future of science, and what I have hinted about its present came only to show the atmospheric intellectual conditions that have predisposed the return to a greater philosophy, correcting the shrinking of the last hundred years. The philosopher finds in the combination of the public air new courage to become likewise independent and faithful to the limitation of his destiny.

But there is another motive stronger than those pointed out for a philosophical renascence to be possible. The tendency for each science to accept its own limitation and proclaim itself independent are only negative conditions, sufficient to remove the obstacles that for a century have paralysed the philosophical vocation, but they do not nourish it, still less vigorously provoke it.

Why, then, does man return to philosophy? Why does the vocation toward it become normal again? Evidently one returns to a thing for the same essential reason that led to it the first time. If not, then the return lacks sincerity; it is a false turning, a feigning of return.

This obliges us to raise the question of why it occurs to man at all to do philosophy.

La Nación, 2 November 1930

V

Why does it occur to man —yesterday, today, or some other day— to philosophize? It behooves us to bring clearly to mind that thing we are wont to call philosophy, in order afterwards to answer the «why» of its exercise.

The first thing that would occur to one would be to define philosophy as the knowledge of the universe. But this definition, without being erroneous, can let slip precisely all that is specific, the peculiar dramatism and the tone of intellectual heroism in which philosophy, and philosophy alone, lives. Indeed, that definition seems a counterpart to the one we might give of physics, saying that it is the knowledge of matter. But it is the case that the philosopher does not place himself before his object —the universe— as the physicist before his, which is matter. The physicist begins by defining its profile, and only afterwards begins his labor and attempts to know its intimate structure. Likewise the mathematician defines number and extension; that is to say, all the particular sciences begin by marking off a piece of the universe, by limiting their problem, which, once limited, partly ceases to be a problem. Put another way: the physicist and the mathematician know in advance the extension and essential attributes of their object; hence they begin not with a problem but with something they give or take as known. But the universe in whose quest the philosopher sets out boldly like an Argonaut is not known what it is. Universe is the enormous and monolithic word that, like a vast and vague gesticulation, hides rather than enunciates this rigorous concept: everything that there is. That, for the present, is the universe. That, mark it well, nothing more than that, because when we think the concept «everything that there is», we do not know what that which there is may be; the only thing we think is a negative concept; namely: the negation of whatever is only part, piece, fragment. «The philosopher, then, unlike every other scientist, embarks for the unknown as such». What is more or less known is a particle, a portion, a splinter of the universe. The philosopher places himself before his object in an attitude distinct from that of every other knower; the philosopher is ignorant of what his object is, and of it he knows only: first, that it is none of the other objects; second, that it is an integral object, that it is the authentic whole, the one that leaves nothing outside and, for that very reason, the only one that suffices to itself. But precisely none of the known or suspected objects possesses this condition. Hence the universe is what we radically do not know, what in its positive content we absolutely ignore.

In another turn we might say: to the other sciences their object is given; but the object of philosophy as such is precisely what cannot be given, because it is everything, and because it is not given it will have to be, in a very essential sense, «the sought-after», the perennially sought-after. There is nothing strange in the fact that the science itself whose object must first be sought, that is, which even as object and matter is already problematic, should have a less tranquil life than the others and not enjoy at first sight what Kant called der sichere Gang. This secure, tranquil, bourgeois step philosophy will never have, being pure theoretical heroism. It will consist in being, like its object, the universal and absolute science that is sought. Thus the first master of our discipline —Aristotle— calls it: philosophy, the science that is sought.

But if we ask whence comes that appetite for the universe, for the integrity of the world, which is the root of philosophy, Aristotle leaves us in the lurch. For him the question is very simple, and he begins his «metaphysics» by saying: «Men feel by nature the desire to know». To know is not to content oneself with things as they present themselves to us but to seek behind them their «being». Strange condition, that of this «being» of things! It is not made manifest in them but, on the contrary, beats hidden always beneath them, «beyond» them. To Aristotle it seems «natural» that we should ask about the «beyond», when the natural thing would be that, our life consisting primarily in finding ourselves surrounded by things, we should content ourselves with these. Of their «being» we have for the present not the slightest news. The things are given to us purely, not their being. Nor is there in them even a positive indication that they have a being behind them. Evidently, the «beyond» of things is in no way inside them.

It is said that man feels curiosity natively. And this is what Aristotle thinks when to the question: «why does man strive to know?», he answers like a physician of Molière: because it is natural to him. «Sign —he continues— that this desire is natural to him is his itch to perceive», above all, to look. Here Aristotle remembers Plato, who placed men of science and philosophers in the species of the philotheamones, of the «lovers of looking», of those who go to spectacles. But to look is the contrary of to know: to look is to run over with one’s eyes what is there —and to know is to seek what is not there: the being of things. It is precisely a not contenting oneself with what can be seen; rather, a denying what is seen as insufficient and a postulating the invisible —the essential «beyond».

Aristotle, with this indication and with many others that abound in his books, reveals to us what his idea of the origin of knowledge is. According to him, it would consist simply in the use or exercise of a faculty that man has, just as looking would be no more than using one’s vision. We have senses, we have memory that conserves their data; we have experience in which that memory is selected and decanted. All of these are innate mechanisms of the human organism, which man, whether he will or not, exercises. But none of that is knowledge. Not even if we add the other «faculties» more strictly called intellectual, such as abstracting, comparing, inferring, etcetera… The intelligence, or the sum of all those powers, is also a mechanism with which man finds himself endowed and which evidently serves, more or less, to know. But knowing itself is not a faculty, endowment, or mechanism; it is, on the contrary, a task that man imposes on himself. And a task that perhaps is impossible. To such a degree is knowledge not an instinct!

In knowing we use our faculties, but not from a simple desire to exercise them, but to supply a need or want that we feel, which need has in itself nothing to do with them and for which perhaps these intellectual faculties of ours are not adequate or, at least, sufficient. Let it be noted, then, that to know is not, without more ado, to exercise the intellectual faculties, since it is not granted that man succeeds in knowing: the only thing that is a fact is that he strives painfully to know, that he asks after the world beyond being and exhausts himself in reaching it.

The true question about the origin of knowledge has always been distorted by supplanting it with the investigation of its mechanisms. It is not enough to have an apparatus to use it. Our houses are full of apparatus out of use, which we do not handle because we are no longer interested in what they provide. John is a man of enormous talent for mathematics, but since only literature interests him, he does not set himself to do mathematics. But furthermore, as I have indicated, it is by no means certain that man’s intellectual gifts allow him to know. If by man’s «nature» we understand, like Aristotle, the sum of his corporeal and mental apparatuses and their functioning, we shall have to recognize that knowledge is not «natural» to him. On the contrary, when he uses all those mechanisms, he finds that he does not fully achieve that which he proposes to himself under the word «know». His purpose, his cognitive desire transcends his gifts, his means for achieving it. He lays hold of as many utensils as he possesses —without ever obtaining full satisfaction from any of them nor from their sum. The reality, then, is that man feels a strange desire to know and that his gifts fail him, what Aristotle calls his «nature».

This obliges, without remission or escape, to recognize that the true nature of man is ampler and that it consists in having gifts, but also in having lacks. Man is composed of what he has «and of what he lacks». If he uses his intellectual gifts in a long and desperate effort, it is not simply because he has them, but, on the contrary, because he finds himself in want of something that he lacks, and in order to obtain it he mobilizes, of course, the means he possesses. The most radical error of all theories of knowledge has been not to notice the initial incongruity that exists between the need man has to know and the «faculties» he counts on for it. Only Plato caught a glimpse that the root of knowing, we might say, its very substance, lies precisely in the insufficiency of human gifts, that it lies in the terrible fact that man «does not know». Neither the God nor the beast has this condition. God knows everything, and for that reason does not know. The beast knows nothing, and for that reason likewise does not know. But man is living insufficiency, man needs to know, perceives desperately that he is ignorant. This is what should be analyzed. Why does man’s ignorance hurt him, as a member he had never had might hurt him?
