Abstract
An article against the censorship whose continuation the Count of Romanones requested: eight years of censorship have been a pedagogy of stupefaction, arriving just when Spain must face a radical reform of the state armed with current ideas. From it he draws the portrait of a political generation for whom intelligence reduces to ‘the art of not being fooled’, a rustic cunning that can only undo.

For a long time now, and repeatedly, it has happened to me to say the following: there comes inevitably over Spain a stage of radical reform in the public body, especially in the State, and there is the risk that the Spaniards will reach that hour with a repertoire of political ideas that are clumsy, antiquated, rusty, paralytic. This will raise to the nth power the difficulties of the situation.
And so it has come about. For my part, I have done everything in my power to avoid it. I have taken advantage of quiet or half-quiet days to combat invalid commonplaces and try to replace them with more current ideas. This labor has earned me quite a few antipathies and some hatreds. But the worst of it is that it has not served for much. And now, in the full din of the struggle, it becomes necessary to renew the campaign of ideological rectification, because the time-worn commonplaces and the great stupidities seem today to celebrate their most shameless triumph.
Enormous responsibility for this attaches to the maintenance of the Censorship for eight years, during which the Spanish people has been entirely subjected to a pedagogy of stupefaction. Under it we continue. It was interrupted for a few days; but —according to my information— the Count of Romanones, even before entering the Government, asked for its restoration and now supports its continuation. Knowing a little of the mental mechanism and the vocabulary of the lucid generation that this incalculable Count symbolizes, one can calculate the reasoning that he forged. Here it is: «For seven years the Dictatorship has lived benefiting from the most rigorous censorship, without “anything happening”. This means that we have been fools not doing the same. Let us learn it for tomorrow.» In which two very characteristic traits of that generation show through. [Text struck by the censorship.] One is to consider that from the Government one must operate by all means against the Spaniards, since only that “something happens” is recognized as a limit to the conduct of the ruler. That is to say: one can do everything to the citizens up to the precise limit of provoking a revolution. [Text struck by the censorship.] And then, when the revolution comes or is announced, the revolution is declared intolerable.
The other trait of the Count and his like consists in believing that intelligence is reduced to the «art of not being a fool», of avoiding being deceived and seeking to deceive others. The opposite is «to be a fool» and, therefore, not to be intelligent. Now then: this is what the villagers understand by intelligence; it is the cunning of the rustic, which comes from the narrowness of his life and the constriction of his mental horizon. To put so much effort into not being deceived presupposes the most boring preoccupation with oneself and the incapacity to set about doing, truly doing something; building, creating. It is evident that neither the sciences, nor great industry, nor religion, nor art, nor the State would exist if attention did not vacate in order to take an interest in things, in the work, forgetting about oneself. That they do not deceive the Count of Romanones wins nothing for Spain nor even for him as a political man. The only thing he has achieved, in his eagerness not to be a fool, is that he himself does not manage to deceive the Spaniards. As I have said on occasion, the Count has believed he hits the mark each day, and he has been mistaken in the totality of his existence. Drawbacks of myopia; the sight of the mouse, which lets him see very well each nearby piece of cheese, but ends in the mousetrap. The mousetrap is this Government into which the Count has fallen, as into his own might have fallen the famous «Mur de Guadalaxara» of which the Archpriest of Hita speaks:
Mur de Guadalaxara un lunes madrugaba…
This incapacity to give oneself fully to some thing —in this case the thing is nothing less than the history of Spain— has given the movements of the Count of Romanones and his kind an irremediably destructive character. Men like that can do nothing: they can only undo. That is why they have undone the Spanish State and would have undone half a dozen of them that Destiny had placed successively in their hands, in their not-at-all foolish hands.
The Count and his time are ignorant that the later generations have discovered the delight of being a fool, of pouring oneself wholly into a creative task; of subjecting oneself to the demands of a work; of accepting the law of things. The most boring character is always oneself, and things, fortunately, distract us from him. Now the Count is going to find, at the summit of his years, those generations before him —who are not villagers, who do not worry about whether they are or are not deceived, but who put their fist upon things. I do not expect that at this stage the Count will learn to be a fool; but, with all sincerity, I take the liberty of recommending that he try.
I do not know, then, whether these paragraphs and those that will follow in the coming days, with the aim of crushing inept commonplaces, will reach the reader. Between his person and mine stands the present Censorship, for which the Count of Romanones is responsible.
