Abstract
From the diagnosis that nobody can replace Europe at the world’s command, the text moves to ‘frivolity’ as living outside one’s own destiny (Italy as example) and then to its central thesis: the fundamental fact of the universe is our life in the biographical sense, a dramatic mixture of fatality and freedom, with one possibility that is most authentically ours.

The visible horizon does not present us anyone capable of substituting Europe in the command of the world. There is, then, a need to decide for one of these two things: either that no one command or that Europe return to command in fullness. It is possible that many, cheerfully, would resolve for the first; in reality, the life of these years on the planet is tempered —rather distempered— by that resolution. They are years of general frivolity, as much for the nations as for individual existence. There is frivolity wherever someone —individual or people— does not live fitted into his own and untransferable destiny, that is, into his task. All of us —some more, others less— realize that we are out of our hinge. Whenever our life comes out of its cardinal socket, whenever it strays, it automatically sends a warning to our consciousness. We try in vain to silence that admonition that our intimacy makes to us when we defraud our sincerity. Because primary sincerity is not a virtue of speaking and saying, but of something prior to expression and even to thought —the sincerity of being what one truly is. Today entire peoples live in extreme insincerity. For example, Italy. In the depths of their collective consciousness they know that the historical attitude adopted by them is not possible nor necessary or unequivocally imposed by the circumstances. On the contrary, they have the impression that they have launched into a capricious posture that diverges from the authentic profile marked by their destiny. For the same reason they need to compensate with pure exaggerations of gesture the lack of radical faith in their own conduct. They drug themselves with extremisms of gesture; they maintain a superficial autosuggestion, sustaining a tone of frenzy with a vague terror of falling into a serene temper and then not being able to defend themselves from the intimate accusation that would rise inexorably from their consciousness.
These same characters are found, outside of public life, in almost all the orders of present existence, revealing with their ubiquity that it is a matter of a most grave anomaly suffered by contemporary man. With identical or analogous traits we could characterize the customary conduct in remote dimensions of politics, such as are art, thought and even other more intimate ones.
To take good account of this it is indispensable to look face to face at the most fundamental fact that exists in the Universe, which is none other than our life —our life in the biographical and not biological sense of the word. From pure being inside it, from pure being we that very fact, we do not notice it, just as we do not usually see the air in which we are immersed. Our life is the fundamental fact for the simple reason that all the other facts are facts of it, occur in our life and consist in something that vitally happens to us. Science itself and whatever it observes, investigates and discovers are things that happen in our life and presuppose it. In this way, however radical a scientific affirmation may be, it will always have a secondary reality in comparison with the primary reality of our living, within which we “make” science, among innumerable other tasks. Our life, in effect, consists in what we do, from enduring a pain with patience or without it, to making a revolution, making a theory or simply making time. Life is always operative, always effort, always labor. Now then: what we do is not imposed on us, as its trajectory is imposed on the bullet. The strange reality that is our life consists, on the one hand, in having by force to do something, and on the other, in having to decide that which we have to do. Therefore, a dramatic mixture of fatality and freedom. To live is to find oneself in a more or less ample realm of possibilities; it is to be able to be this, this and this. Even if those possibilities were indifferent, life would be an easy thing. But far from that, it happens that in every instant the repertoire of possibilities of being that opens before us has a hierarchy. Among those possibilities there is one that is the most ours, the one that each one would have to be in order to be truly and authentically what he is. In other words: each life has an untransferable destiny, but it is free to accept it or not. If it does not accept it, it continues to be life; but that life will consist in the constant negation of itself. And so it happens with great frequency: each man devotes himself to not being who he is, he strives to be another; for example, to be like the others: like this group, like that other group of the others.
This capacity that life has to alienate itself, to falsify itself, may seem most strange; but it is evident and there is no other remedy than to recognize it. Only through it does life enjoy the privilege of having destiny, predestination. Destiny is not, without more, ineluctable necessity. The stone lacks destiny, although everything that happens to it happens to it irrevocably. The essential of destiny is that, being inexorable, it demands and allows that we accept it or not. I will not be what I properly and untransferably am if I do not do such and such things. But I can perfectly not do them, and in their place do others. Then I defraud my true being, I supplant it with another that has no authenticity of destiny, that has no ultimate reality. When I do this, my life occupies itself in unwinding itself. Because the freedom that acts in every life is only negative, it allows me not to accept my destiny; but it does not allow me to fabricate for myself another destiny and make it so that, in vital truth, I am another than what I am.
Thus we come to clarify for ourselves the idea of sincerity. He is vitally sincere who lives his personal destiny. In what is this recognized? In that upon doing something —thinking, feeling, behaving— he has the evidence that what he does is necessary and not an interchangeable task indifferently replaceable by another.
A nation, an epoch, are worth in the proportion in which there occur in them men whose doing springs from their internal fatality. They are on the other hand frivolous when a type of man predominates who does not feel as necessary, irremissible, what he does.
This happens, for example, with the new artist. He starts very justly from a disgust toward what there is of insincere phraseology in traditional art; but then he finds himself without a clear artistic imperative. And instead of doing nothing, of accepting the hard destiny of present art, which is its radical crisis, he decides to do anything, to install himself in an arbitrariness. It is painful to say it, but it seems to me undeniable that the young artists of our time live their craft with a turbid conscience and that this demoralizes them as men.
In a much lesser degree a similar situation has reigned in the ideology of the last twenty years. The highest representative of it in the world, Max Scheler, can serve as an example. Being a matter of pure thought, pure arbitrariness was not possible, and, in effect, Scheler is never in that sense arbitrary. But his ideas were mere possibilities of attitude before the problems; they were almost never forces. He told us highly acute things that “could be thought” about a subject, but not those that necessarily had to be thought. That is why he lived in revocable theories, and his doctrinal changes did not have the character of a deeply motivated evolution, but that of a capricious dispersion that tires of one posture and tries another.
The same thing is observed in the political ideas of our time. Certain substantial and irrefutable objections against democracy make many excellent men not accept it as a destiny and not root in it their public life; but since on the other hand there are dimensions of the democratic doctrine that are of an incontestable evidence, they do not manage to transfer the root of themselves to other political ideals notoriously impossible. They remain, then, in an attitude of play; they play at being and not being democrats, they pretend to be fascists or communists. Fascism and communism are, at least for the European, two of those possibilities without authenticity that today man finds before himself and in which he can install himself as in an agreed fable, knowing that he defrauds his rigorous vital destiny.
Oggi popoli interi vivono in estremata insincerità.

From this ambient frivolity one could still offer another, more intimate example, were it not too difficult to demonstrate. Let it go, then, merely as a vague suspicion. The indecision of the European present, the insincere life that adopts revocable attitudes, exempt from inexorability, manifests itself, in my judgment, in the defective sincerity with which today woman chooses a type of man to fall in love with. Arbitrary motives bring into relief, as if in play, certain species of virility that in their secret depths do not interest the normal woman. Nevertheless, lacking security in her sentimental destiny, woman feigns enthusiasm for the gigolo and comes to be blunted in her perception of other masculine qualities. But this is a delicate theme that would require meticulous analyses of contemporary love. I only wished today to present the landscape of frivolity that the mere announcement that no one rules the world has aroused. Most human beings need an external pressure that fits them well into their destiny. This pressure is the historical dominion of someone who represents a system of vital norms.

Vada, dunque, soltanto come vago sospetto.
