Ortega y Gasset

Abstract

A political article resting on a philosophical thesis: nothing that wants to live can be anachronistic, because the life to be lived is always ‘this one, now’, hic et nunc — all the more so for the life of the State. Hence the call to study youth, since the present is an organism in which tomorrow acts as its inner organ.

Service to the Republic does not mean meddling in the Republic. For that reason, once it had come about, I have secluded myself in my corner, I have deliberately absented myself from intervention in the course of things. Among Spaniards of some notoriety I am the one who has least contributed to the republican triumph (the «why» will be told when it matters), and it was fitting that the meritorious of the new regime should lead the nation in this first stage, not only from the Government, but from the rostrum and the newspaper. With this I answer the letters that reach me asking why I do not write. Let my readers remember that I have always made known the scarcity of my political gifts and my little vocation for the exercise of Government. My commitment with the small group of those habitual readers, and, in general, with my compatriots, was exceedingly binding: to proclaim my truth when it has formed itself in me and its enunciation proves opportune and fruitful. Neither more nor less. It was the radical and exclusive commitment that he has with his country — and with Humanity and with the stars — who has submerged his whole life in the intellectual office.

But circumstances oblige to more, to much more. I hoped that intervention in the full political life could be excused for those of us who do not possess lucid conditions for it. But I am seeing that it cannot. Between one and another they are blurring the Republic for us. In a couple of weeks they have drawn it back a hundred years below itself. Against this we have to fight like energumens. The philosophers too know, in their hour, how to be energumens. Let there be no doubt, let there be no doubt! We ask nothing for ourselves, we will not even be maniacal in the defense of our «program», more advanced, to be sure, than those of almost all the parties active today. (More advanced, but in a different way). Above our «program» what matters to us is that the Spanish Republic install itself, at once, at a historical level and enjoy without hesitation or equivocation certain generic qualities which, think what one may, are essential to the present. That is to say, our only intolerance will be directed against all anachronism. The Spanish Republic cannot be anachronistic. One cannot be anachronistic. To be anachronistic is, precisely, not to be; to have been already, before now, and defunct, to want still to take a stroll.

Everything that wants to live, to live fully, must submit to an inexorable imperative: to be of its time. It is not a matter of weakness before the «fashions». No; it is not a joke, it is something terrible. Life is not a vague, abstract thing. The life that must be lived is always, and necessarily, «this, this of now» — that is, that of a determinate time. Whether you will or not. Hence there is no other remedy, to live fully, than to fill the profile of the hour, to make our inner world fit exactly into the contour of the present world.

Even in your individual life, which you live alone with yourself, you may attempt to do whatever takes your fancy; for example, to be of the time of Pi y Margall, or to become a knight of the Holy Sepulchre, or, which amounts to both things, you may kill yourself. That is your affair! But the life that is made with others, and especially politics, the life of the State, which is made with everyone, must be infinitely of today and of here, hic et nunc.

Now then; whoever wishes to see clearly the physiognomy of the present, its authentic core, the true norms of our time, has no other remedy than to bend over youth and study its intimate reactions. For the simple reason that the present is a compromise between past and future, which thus form an organism — the body of actuality. In this organic «today» tomorrow exercises the functions of viscera, which is the arcane and impelling thing, the youth, which beats, still mute, beneath the materia already calloused and horny of the past, beneath the mature, hardened generations. It matters little what youth thinks, that is, what it says. The privilege of youth is not to know what it says. But it matters very much to find out what it feels, sometimes in contradiction with its words, received almost always from other generations.

I know very well that the Republic of these weeks has brought some disillusion to youth. And it is perfectly right. Through carelessness, through inopportune softness, through abandonment, it has been allowed that terribly antiquated elements set the tone, who conceive nothing but the old democracy of our grandfathers, turbulent, of confused ideas, at bottom anarchical. The grotesque caso has occurred of a newspaper harshly reproaching the president of the Government because he did not receive everyone. According to that newspaper, the characteristic thing about a democracy is that the presidents of the Government receive all citizens. The thing amounts to no more than an unimportant detail; but it is, for that very reason, a symptom of a perfectly ridiculous democratic conception — patriarchal, biblical, of the isle of Barataria. The only thing that gave the case some gravity was the fact that Señor Alcalá Zamora felt obliged to offer apologies to that newspaper and publish a statistic of the visits he had received that day.
