Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A polemical political article: Ortega denies that his recent paragraphs are a ‘retraction’ or a fit of ill humour, and announces a series of notes amounting to political memoirs of the Republic’s first fifteen months. He insists on raising the intellectual level of public life after the Dictatorship.

It is said that one of my recent articles has caused some damage to the regime. That is what is said, but you —of course— will not believe it. You will not even believe that those who say it believe it, especially those hostile to the regime. If they believed it, they would not say it. They would let the damage come about and would not hasten to announce it, running the risk that the announcement of the damage would prevent the damage.
All that talk belongs to the level of foolishness into which —I will later indicate from when— Spanish public life has fallen and against which many of us are resolved to act. For it is too foolish to consider as damage to the regime the fact that, in an hour of evident discouragement and lukewarmness over the errors of the policy pursued, a small gentleman gives with his shoulder a push to the republican horizon in order to try to widen it and make room in it for other things, other people and other ways of thinking and feeling. The enemies of the regime are precisely those interested in the Republic being confused with the republicans of a certain hour, as if the former did not have before it many other hours and many other better forms of republicanism.
But if the enemies of the regime have believed it easy to procure that confusion, it is because many effective republicans have given occasion to it, imposing a canonical and little less than exclusive interpretation of republican policy. Since it was more than foreseeable that this evil would be produced, I have taken care, since the beginnings of the new regime, to mark my discrepancy, that is, to demonstrate as I went that the Republic is very wide and that in it there is room for every kind of Spaniard.
It is, then, a wanton desire to make light of things to characterize those paragraphs of mine as a “rectification” or as an outbreak of ill humour. To both appreciations I respond with a single and fulminating argument: that in the incriminated paragraphs there is not a single idea nor, perhaps, a single sentence that is not found in the series of articles and speeches I have had occasion to give to the public since the republican triumph and which, for the purposes of situations like the present, I have gathered in two volumes, thus facilitating quick consultation and textual confirmation.
The fuss, therefore, is superfluous. There is simply the fact —beneficial in my judgment— that alongside the republicans who govern today there exist others who have always had a different image of what Spanish republican policy should and can be. That saying a thing so plain and natural should produce some commotion proves to what point the excessive apparent homogeneity of republicanism had come to be an evil.
It is well that I be insulted from one side and the other. It is what has always happened to me. I only ask, for the honour of my country and for the sake of a better Spain, that the insults be interwoven with some serious, precise, quality reasoning. All of us, absolutely all —I include, then, the enemies of the regime— are obliged to correct the descent of the intellectual level suffered by our public life during the years of the Dictatorship. It was still triumphant and, in the form of insinuation that censorship imposed, I noted that descent. (See the prologue to La redención de las provincias). Spain had shipwrecked in an ocean of vulgarity and stupidity: it is necessary that, all together, we urge her toward clear ideas. I believe that Spain has today in the world a mission of great style. But it is useless to attempt that she fulfil it if her mental clarity is not set in order.
I am going, for the moment, to gather in a series of articles the notes which, to get clear with myself, I have been taking since the Republic arrived. In them I expressed my intimate response to public events and to the way of behaving of the rulers. Developed now, they may stand as political memoirs of these fifteen months. They will delineate with sufficient detail the discrepancy between my republican thought and that which has ruled during those fifteen months, a discrepancy which, of course, is much greater up to last December. The reader will not take amiss the heaviness which the necessity of citing my own public words, pronounced during that stage and which document the old character of my disagreement, imposes on these Memoirs of fifteen months.
