Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A letter to the editor of El Sol: Ortega denies having ‘attacked’ the press and defines his trade as an intellectual, which consists only in seeking truth and proclaiming it. The press is neither a person nor a group but an elemental historical force, and saying it must change if Europe is to be saved is no more an attack than describing an earthquake.

Dear Director of El Sol.
My dear friend: It seems to me very well that El Sol defends the Press against my lucubrations if it believes that I have attacked it. Every attack justifies not only defense, but counterattack. But what frankly no longer seems to me so well is that El Sol really believes, or pretends to believe, that I have attacked it. For several reasons. The first is that, despicable or not, my production has passed almost entirely through the very columns of El Sol. They are thirteen years of almost continuous gravitation of my prose, sometimes kilometer-long, upon this newspaper. It is not a day or two. At the end of those thirteen years, by force there must have registered in the minds of the readers, and even more in those of the colleagues of the journalistic house, the character proper to my way of writing. And it is the most characteristic thing of that character, that I have never «attacked» anyone or anything. Since I began to write I have tried to exercise with rigorous scrupulousness my office of intellectual. The intellectual, in my understanding, has come into the world for nothing more than to strive in pursuit of truth, and once found, to launch it sonorously to the wind. One can think that that office of truthfulness is superfluous and even baleful. For that reason, with undeniable logic, the men who think thus have devoted themselves from time to time to hanging intellectuals. But what lacks logic is to admit the intellectual and, at the same time, get angry because his truths are harsh and consider them as «attacks». The present case is the best example.
I have insinuated several times, and more energetically in my last article, that the situation of the Press in Europe has to change if Europe wants to be saved. Suppose that this is an erroneous opinion. But can that signify what is called an «attack»? The difference is important. When someone attacks us we do not have to take time to weigh serenely whether he is right or not; rather, we shall try to place ourselves from the outset in a defensive and retaliatory attitude, leaving for another time the obligation of being truthful. But there is attack only when the intention of attacking is at least presumable. Now then: will you tell me what sense it makes for someone, whoever he may be, to attack the Press, and not only that of a nation, but that of all Europe? Remember the tale of Manolito Gázquez, in which this Andalusian hero boasts of having completely avoided a drop of water touching him during a downpour, merely by brandishing his foil against the rain. To attack the Press thus, in genere, would be to stab the sea or bite the air.
It is, then, ridiculous that when a defect is emphasized, or simply a native limitation of the Press, it should rear up offended, as if it were an individual person or a particular and definite group. No, dear friend, the Press is not you, nor am I, nor the dozens of Madrid journalists with their proper and inalienable names: it is an elementary and tremendous historical force, upon which we all must meditate, you and I, the Madrid journalists and the citizens of all nations. Say, then, that I have been mistaken from beginning to end; but do not say that I have wounded your self-love. I have not seen the earthquake protest because a newspaper says: «The seismic movement caused grave damages. The phenomenon occurred because the ground, of volcanic nature, is not very solid».
Another reason that should have prevented placing oneself before my paragraphs in a defensive attitude is the fiction that El Sol’s own editorial employs to answer me. It treats me in it repeatedly and markedly as a University professor, that is, as a stranger who, from outside the Press, holds opinions about it. With this fiction half the road is gained so that my sentences should in effect seem an attack originating from an intellectual class —the professors— emulous or envious of the power enjoyed by another class of intellectuals —the journalists. And I, clearly, cannot deny that I have something of the university professor; but El Sol will recognize that very little has been noticed in me. The twenty years of work that I have buried in the University have passed completely unnoticed for the great public, and I have never claimed anything on their account. On the contrary: I have lived in the open weather of the newspaper, not only as a collaborator, but as an anonymous pen. I have assumed during all my life the risks and vexations of the journalistic profession, and besides I have lived economically from it. It is, then, vain for El Sol to pretend to answer a gentleman who is a university professor and lives in the house opposite. No; it answers a journalist who has ideas about the Press different from its own, and, it seems, mistaken ones.
The difference here too is important. I do not understand why El Sol, which is always disposed to make new usages when the old ones show themselves plainly unacceptable, has now wanted to follow the archaic and baleful custom of reacting «by esprit de corps», and of «deeming itself in the case» of solidarizing with the totality of a profession. This is no longer used anywhere but in Spain, and it is one of our leprosies. Thus we shall never get out into the open sea, we shall not manage for things to be established upon an area of minimal truth, the only one capable of sustaining a middling national organization. For a profession to remain at full efficiency it is necessary that there always exist in it a dissident group, resolved not to make itself solidary or responsible for the profound vices that the rest of the «body» cultivates and favors. Only that group will always find itself in the clear and will be able to save the profession before the public, drawing upon itself the respect and authority necessary. This is an idea that I have maintained for a long time. Thus, in 1914, it already served me to found upon it my announcement of the grave misadventures into which the Spanish Army was going to fall:
«In all the other national organisms —I was saying— there have been individuals of those who render in them service functions and bury in them their efforts, belonging in their majority to the new generations, who have had the courage, who have fulfilled the duty, of declaring the fundamental defects of those organisms. In contrast, up to today we do not know broad and severe criticisms of the organization of the Army, and this is a duty that be done, this is a matter, in which we must be decided to obtain clarification», Vieja y nueva política.
This «esprit de corps» leads El Sol to lose the argument against me, making it reject as erroneous most trivial facts to which I have alluded and which are notorious to everyone. For example, «the interests, many times unavowable, of the newspaper Enterprises». It is the case that in my article allusion is made to this so well-known fact, precisely to take away from it relatively importance and to fix attention upon the natural limitations of the Press, even in the purest case of its exercise. I was saying: «The interests, many times unavowable, of their Enterprises would have to cease acting upon the newspapers; money would have to be kept chastely away from influencing the doctrine of the dailies, and it would suffice for the Press to abandon itself to its own mission to paint the world upside down».
If, then, no question was made of those «unavowable interests», what devil has inspired El Sol with the resolution to deny that they exist and to try to correct me on a datum that is as perfectly known to it as to me? This is losing the argument for not seeking to have it, and instead of that adopting an inopportune posture of lawyer and defender, instead of collaborating in the frank endeavor to discover the true place and office and limits of the Press within the European life that is approaching.
El Sol has done wrong in not wanting to leave me even a shred of reason, because with that it reveals that it was not going quietly to discuss what things are and should be, but to defend the indefensible. There is no verisimilitude at all that anyone, whoever he may be, is mistaken so integrally, down to those details, as El Sol gives to understand that I have been mistaken.
Situación tal me parece funestísima.
I have known El Sol since its cradle. I know minutely the action of its Enterprise, and I know very well that not only does it not inspire its newspaper according to unavowable interests, but that, on the contrary, El Sol has served it only to draw upon the particular businesses of its proprietors the most abusive rays of public Power. I know all this as well, neither more nor less, as El Sol itself can know it. But El Sol itself knows, neither more nor less as well as I, that that is a case not unique, but rather exceptional or extremely infrequent in the enormous volume of the European Press. Why, then, does it pretend to ignore it and present me as having said something that does not conform to the truth?
This is what I call old journalism and bad journalism[81].
I already indicated in my article that upon the influence of the Press in the present epoch one would have to speak at great length if one wanted to put things in their place. I did not pretend there nor now to do it, because I need these days to write about Spanish matters of extreme urgency. But I do want to finish by maintaining that El Sol’s editorial does not answer the thesis of my article but another imaginary one for which I am not responsible.
I have not said, not even in a moment of obnubilation, that the «spiritual power» that the Press exercises today should be snatched away from it. I try, in writing, to avoid the very gross stupidities, and that would be one of large format. Still less has it occurred to me to propose that the University exercise that «spiritual power» that the Press administers today. For the simple reason that the University is, more or less, the contrary of the Press, and it would make no sense that it should want to exercise the same power. It is not a question of a single power that it is convenient to transfer.
My thesis is exceedingly different; but I must have formulated it most clumsily when it has been understood so much the wrong way round. What I aspired to say was this: In history diverse «spiritual powers» have normally coexisted, and only this plurality of different and more or less antagonistic powers assures social health. Those powers had and have —inexorably— distinct ranks, although all are, in effect, spiritual. Three hundred years ago, for example, the following influences or pressures of spirit coexisted in France: the Church, the State, the University, literature (belles lettres). Well then: I think, perhaps erroneously, that today only a single «spiritual power» —that of the Press— possesses full liveliness. Now then: this is, by the very nature of the Press, the least elevated of the «spiritual powers». Such a situation seems to me most baleful. And I ask consequently, not that the Press cease to be a «spiritual power», but that it not be the only one and that it suffer the competition and correction of others. Of one, for the present: the University. It is a question, then, of the collaboration and confrontation, if one wishes even of the struggle, between two distinct forms of spirit, so that the average man may receive two different images or interpretations of the world. The journalistic interpretation is and will always be the perspective of the momentary as such. However much the university men collaborate in the newspaper, the dominant perspective, tone, tendencies and modes will be the journalistic ones (this discussion is an example of it). The university interpretation of «things» is and will always be that of accentuating in the actuality the non-momentary.
None of these are matters or facts that I invent. From the thirteenth to the seventeenth century —therefore the centuries in which Europe «sets»— the University intervened in public life not vaguely, but exercising a most concrete power, almost jurisdictional, by means of its opinions upon the most actual and grave affairs of public life. The Kings or the Republics had to, whether they wanted to or not, reckon with it because it possessed «social power». This «social power» is not conceded by anyone as a title, but is an absolute fact within society and it is had or not had. Today the University does not have it —neither little nor much. The most immediate proof of this is that El Sol, to answer me, supposes that I am only a poor «learned professor» of the University, as if to say: Let me alone with all that!
This is what cannot continue to be, and, by Bacchus!, will not be. The undivided spiritual empire of the Press is intolerable. And I am resolved to preach this throughout all the provinces of Spain, throughout all the nations where I know my voice reaches a little, across a couple of continents; in diverse languages, in varied tones —because it is a truth as big as a temple. And I am resolved to say my truth however harsh it may be. Because in Europe one can no longer breathe, of pure and total miasmatic falsification, at the very foundations of public life.
As for that story of the «spiritual power», neither is it a question of a simple notion of mine. They are an idea and a name invented with that widening of meaning when they had, by force, to be invented, at the hour when the problem to which they refer began to be acute: 1830-1850: Auguste Comte. It is not, then, a vague concept, but sufficiently precise, upon which many men of high mind have thought. It is not my fault if the newspapers have occupied themselves with it very little.
