Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
If society is cooperation, its members must be workers: here democracy sharpens into socialism, and to socialize man is to make him a worker in culture. Hence the ethical value of social pedagogy and the condemnation of the double school, one for the rich and one for the poor, which breaks human unity by dividing men into cultured and uncultured. It closes with Plato: ‘let us make education the citadel of the State’.

If society is cooperation, the members of society have to be, before anything else, workers. He who does not work cannot participate in society. This is the affirmation by means of which democracy becomes precise in socialism. To socialize man is to make of him a worker in the magnificent human task, in culture, where culture embraces everything, from digging the earth to composing verses.
It is today a scientific truth acquired for in aeternum that the only morally admissible social state is the socialist state: although I am not to affirm that the true socialism be that of Karl Marx, nor much less that the workers’ parties be the only highly ethical parties. But in this or the other interpretation, before socialism every political theory is anarchism, it denies the suppositions of cooperation, substance of society, regime of coexistence.
What characterized the slave builder of pyramids was his passive cooperation: the worker, if he is not to be a slave, needs to have a living consciousness of the meaning of his labour. It seems to me inhuman to retain a man for thirty years in the corner of a workshop without providing him a vision of things that gives a noble significance to his toil. The Gobelins artists work behind the tapestries, and do not see the design that their hands, used mechanically, go forming. Here is the ethical value of social pedagogy: if every social individual has to be a worker in culture, every worker has the right to be endowed with the cultural consciousness.
The public instruction of the European countries —not only of Spain— perpetuates in its organization a crime of lèse-humanity; the school is two schools: the school of the rich and the school of the poor. The poor are not merely poor in estate: they are also poor of spirit. A time will come —by ignominy it has still not come— when one will not have to study men classified within the categories of poor and rich, as the animalcules are classified in vertebrates and invertebrates. But it is even worse that today men are also divided into cultured and uncultured; that is, into men and submen.
The sign of immorality is the rupture of human unity and immoral is the Justinian jurist when he knows two distinct men: the free man and the man-thing, the slave. Well then: the existence of cultured and uncultured, the division of the school, is much more immoral because it splits more knowingly the human unity.
The social pedagogy that demands education by and for society, demands also the socialization of education. I deem that the workers’ parties forget a little the single school.
I fear not having carried to your spirit with all the vigour with which I feel it the power of optimism that social education encloses in perspective: «Let us make of education the citadel of the State», Plato exclaimed. Let the centre of citizen energy be the guarantee of continuity in the labours of culture.
