We have seen Azorín insisting upon that stratum of life in which it appears as repetition, echo and resonance. Our today is the reiteration of our yesterday, and the present the new channel where the flux of the past perpetuates itself. Looking against the light at present-day Spain, he sees the Spanish life of yore and of always that circulates larval through arteries of new countenance. He is a man who, in order to contemplate the sky, bends over the trembling surface of a pond in order to find the clouds repeated in its liquid depth. He is a man who does not find himself until he finds himself in another. On hearing the centenary sigh of Jacinto Bejarano he discovers in his breast the same murmur of complaint, as in a couplet the final syllables of the first verse stand out and take profile when they sound again at the end of the second.
Which will be the muse of this poet fond of echoes, melancholy auscultator of monotonies? It is not the muse of history that, erudite and frigid, with the physiognomy of a governess, operates upon the past the way the dissector does upon the dead body. It will be rather a soul woven purely of nostalgias that, the more it advances, the more it feels itself gravitating over what it left behind —for example, the wife of Lot, who walks with the beautiful Hebrew face always turned backward.
