Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
A fragment on the dehumanization of art: alongside metaphor there is a simpler device — inverting the habitual hierarchy of things and putting life’s smallest events in the foreground. To the suprarealism of metaphor there thus corresponds an ‘infrarealism’; examples: Proust, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Joyce, Giraudoux, Morand.

But if the metaphor is the most radical instrument of dehumanization, it cannot be said that it is the only one. There are innumerable ones of diverse scope.
One, the simplest, consists in a simple change of the habitual perspective. From the human point of view things have an order, a determinate hierarchy. Some seem to us very important, others less, others completely insignificant. To satisfy the eagerness to dehumanize it is not, then, forced to alter the primary forms of things. It suffices to invert the hierarchy and make an art where the minimal events of life appear in the foreground, standing out with monumental air.
This is the latent nexus that unites the manners of new art in appearance most distant. One same instinct of flight and evasion from the real is satisfied in the suprarrealism of metaphor and in what may be called infrarrealism. To the poetic ascension may be substituted an immersion beneath the level of the natural perspective. The best examples of how, by pushing realism to the extreme, one surpasses it —no more than by attending, magnifying glass in hand, to the microscopic of life— are Proust, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Joyce.
Ramón can compose a whole book on breasts —someone has called him «new Columbus who sails toward hemispheres»— or on the circus, or on the dawn, or on the Rastro or the Puerta del Sol. The procedure consists simply in making protagonists of the vital drama the low quarters of attention, what ordinarily we neglect. Giraudoux, Morand, etcetera, are, in varying modulation, people of the same lyrical team.
This explains that the last two were so enthusiastic of the work of Proust, as, in general, it clarifies the pleasure that this writer, so of another time, provides to new people. Perhaps the essential that the vast estate of his book has in common with the new sensibility, is the change of perspective: disdain toward the ancient monumental forms of the soul that the novel described, and inhuman attention to the fine structure of the feelings, of the social relations, of the characters.
